TRANSFERABLE SKILLS AUDIT

Name: Olivia Hunte

Course:Level 3 Business

Year:2016

Date:26/09/2016

Section 1
Consider the skills listed below and rate how important you think each skill is for employment and how competent you are in
this skill. Consider how each of these skills may enhance your performance, and allow you to develop and advance further.
You may wish to discuss these with your advisor of studies. Alternatively, you may wish to ask a friend or family member, and
to compare and discuss your separate findings.
Once you have rated yourself, multiply the number in the column marked Competence with that in the column Job
Importance. So, for example, if you feel that you are not very proficient in verbal and written communication (i.e. you have
rated your competence at 4), but that these skills are very important for employment (i.e. you have rated it at 5), then your
overall total score would be 5 X 4 = 20.

Section 2

This section will provide you with examples of the types of evidence you can provide to demonstrate your level of
competence with each skill.

their point of view

Body Language ability to match body

language appropriately to what is being
said verbally

X 10

I have the ability to express self well in writing as I have

written assignment and essays throughout my education.
I have the ability to network well with people informally
as I have used social media to communicate with my
friends and family.
I have the ability to speak formally to a group of people.
I have had experience in this when I was involved in
running a jobs fair at Shipley College. We had employers
come in and it was my job to go round and introduce
them to our college and let them know all the
information they needed.

10

X 5

I am a good listening as when someone is sharing their

ideas or telling us what is needed to be done, I take it all
in and understand what I am meant to be doing or if that
person needs help Ill understand their point of view
clearly. This is important because it shows that I am
taking in what I am been told to do rather than just going
and doing it.
When I am working in a formal manner I will sit upright
and be professional about what I am doing. I will match
my hand gestures match what I am saying.

WORKING WITH OTHERS

Cooperation
Ability to collaborate effectively within
a team

X 10

I would say that I collaborate effectively within a team.

This is because I will share my ideas and work with
others to help them if they are struggling or if I am
struck I will ask for my team for guidance. This is

important because it shows you can work well with other

people and not just on your own.
Negotiation
Ability to reach a mutually satisfactory
outcome through compromise

Sensitivity
Ability to respond appropriately to
individual differences, e.g., age, gender,
etc.
Leadership
Ability to encourage and motivate
others

SKILL

I have been involved in negotiation before when running

our business jobs fair event, because we had to discuss
where we were going to have the event. I was involved
in deciding whether we were going to go with having a
free venue or an expensive one that wasnt part of
Shipley College. So it was up to us to negotiate with a
tutor on getting the best venue, so we chose the venue
within Shipley College because more students would
attend.

X 10

I would say I have the ability to respond appropriately to

individual differences as I do not judge people on their
gender, race, age etc. I think it is important to give
anyone a chance and respond to them in the best suitable
way.

ability to motivate others. When we have been given
assignments in the past and a class friend has been
negative about it and knocking their ability, I will help
give them that confidence and motivation in getting on
with the work and taking it step by step.

EVIDENCE FOR YOUR LEVEL OF

COMPETENCE
I have supervised people before when doing my jobs fair
event as I was the team leader of marketing.
I am able to look at priorities and figure out what is the
most important and will need doing first.

significance, effect size
Application
Ability to organise and present
numerical data in an appropriate manner

16

12

12

I used some of ratio percentages on maths before as well

as mean but I havent done them very much.

I think would be capable to present data in an

appropriate manner that involved numbers as I have
produced numerical data in school before and I have got
knowledge of maths.

I have created databases for my work in the past, like
when I was doing IT at school we had to create many
databases.
I have created many power points before. The last one
that was created was in my business course for one of
my assignments.
I receive emails on a daily basis, on my college email
and my own email address. I send out emails at college.
I have the ability to send attachments in emails as I have
done them before and I have also received them.
I have used the internet since I was younger so I am used
to using it and knowing how it works.
I have the ability to download files from the internet and
use them in WP.
I have the ability to use google and know how it works
because I have been using it for years.

PROBLEM SOLVING
Creativity
Ability to generate new ideas or
conceive existing ideas in a new way
Organisation and Planning
Ability to set down a systematic
sequence of activities and carry them
through in an effective manner
Research
Ability to gather information in a
systematic way to establish certain facts

I think I have the ability to create new ideas and make

current ideas develop on a different way. I am always up
for looking for new ways of doing something because
then I will be able to figure out what ideas work best.

12

When I have been getting ready for assignments I have

taken as many notes as I can and then once I have
finished them, I will then rewrite them on a google doc.
This is a effective for me because I will be able to
remember the work a lot more easily.

12

I have collected certain facts when I was creating a

article for my unit 4 assignment which was The

or principles

Business environment. I collected all the research that I

would be needing to write my article that was based on
stakeholders at different organisations. I made sure that I
was able to set my work out in a order that would suit
me best.

When I have been in college, I have had lessons of

where my tutors would talk about what would be coming
up in the assignment and what information is key. When
they have been speaking I have summarised what has
been said and written it in notes.

For the centre of Excellence, we have been given a

project to work on and for this we have to choose what
team wed like to be in and I chose to work in the
receptionist team and I will do research on this and see
what skills I will be able to develop.

12

I would say that I can identify my strengths and

weaknesses. A strength of my personal development is
that I am quite a positive minded person and I will
always give something a try before giving up, a
weakness of mine is that sometimes I can get distracted
by using my phone.
For my educational development I would say that a
strength is that I always take notes and make sure that I

loads to do, but a weakness would be that I might not
come back to my work for a few days.
I have a career plan of what I would like to do when I
leave college. Which is to get an apprenticeship in the
human resource department.
I have used my own experiences to write in a variety of
contexts. For example when we had the jobs fair a
camera went missing that I was responsible for and I
have used this example to show that I can remain calm
under pressure, be positive and not give up as I used it
when I was in an interview and writing some of my
assignments.
For assignments in the past I have used books, articles
and the internet to find a range of situations.
I can always look back at what I have done and say what
I thought I did well at and what I could do better at. For
example when running the jobs fair I think I did well at
making sure my team knew what was going on and
when a task was done by but I would say that next time I
need to start my tasks off earlier so that they are all set
out in advance to the event.

home. This way I am not only doing it whilst in college

because then it would all build up. I set days and times
that I will do my work at and make sure that I get it
done. This way I am able to meet all my deadlines on
time without stressing.
I am able to pick out the key information that I will be
needing and place it in the right place as well as
knowing which people I will need to involve in my work
or find out who I will need in order to complete my
work.
I have used libraries since I was young, as I used to go to
one when I was little, I had one in my secondary school
and I now have one at college.
I am able to take relevant notes and make sure they are
in an order that I will remember and be able to figure out
easily.
I have been using harvard referencing for my
assignments at Shipley College.

Identify your learning needs

Now pick three of the highest scoring skills from the above audit (by multiplying your scores as shown above) that you need to develop further.
List these below in order of priority.

Skill Area

Action Plan for Development and where you can access these

1. Ability to use a spreadsheet

to record and manipulate
different sets of data

I have used spreadsheets before but not a lot. I think I need more work on these because in human resources they
will se spreadsheets a lot to record wages and money that is being used. I will need to learn to use spreadsheets
properly and be able to just get on with making them rather than asking someone for help.

2. Ability to create a

Creating a database is important for the job that I am interested in because you are looking after other colleagues
that work within your company. So a database is needed to collect their information and keep it safe and look after
all the information that they provide to the company. I would like to build my skills on this and to do that I think I
will have to do research on what is needed as well as going on work experience.

database

3. Ability to interpret
descriptive statistics, e.g.
ratios percentages, means,
standard deviations

This is an important key ability, because in human resources it is their responsibility to sort peoples wages out,
they will have to use ratio percentages, means and standard deviations for their job. I have a little bit of knowledge
of how these are used but not much, so in order to gain this skill I will need to do practise and have helped on how
they work.

Section 2: Providing Evidence you have the Skills

COMMUNICATION

Communication may be formal or informal, personal or impersonal, creative or factual. Messages may be delivered verbally, in writing or nonverbally. There are many areas where examples of each communication approach may have been successfully applied, at university, at work, at
home, etc
Written - Ability to express self well in writing Ability to express self well in writing
Essays/reports for School/University, competitions, Scholarships, Work
I have written reports when doing my assignments in college. For example when we did a jobs fair at Shipley
College, once we had finished we had to write a report on how we thought the event went. Whether we would
change anything for when we ran an event again and what we thought went well.
Reports/Minutes from Committees/Clubs
When planning our jobs fair event we had to have meetings and take minutes, explaining what we were going to
do and when it was going to be completed by. These minutes would be shared with our project manager and he
would keep check on making sure our tasks were getting done on time.

Personal Statements/Covering letters for CVs, Application forms

Here is a print screen of part of my cv:

Posters for forthcoming events or to present research gathered

When we were doing our jobs fair we created a poster, so that we could advertise to students of college.
Letters to gain sponsorship/support, contact new friends/old friends

E-mail contacts for any of the above

Here is an e-mail that I sent to the head of business, making sure that she approved of the poster that had been
created for the jobs fair.

Written - Ability to express self well in writing

Verbal:
Informal ability to network easily with other people
Tutorials, socially (making friends, making contacts), gathering or giving information, for example for a holiday or to solve a problem at
work or to arrange an outing (in person or over the telephone)
I have informal communication with people on a daily basis, for example I will text my friends to arrange to go out
and meet up. This is informal because it is only to my friends and doesnt need to be professional. I will also have
informal communication with people in person, as when I am with my family and friends I will be casual and talk
informally.
Formal ability to express self clearly and concisely to a group of people
Presentations university/school/clubs/committees/interviews
I have had an interview at Morrisons recently and I had to make sure that I gave clear communication and that I
was able to give examples for each question I was asked because this way they are able to get an insight on what
type of person I am.
Non-verbal:
Listening ability to attend actively to others views and ideas and understand their point of view
Lectures (evidenced from good notes and good results!), in groups/teams, peer tutoring, supporting/counselling others, ability to take
instructions (e.g. when learning a new skill music, driving, sport).
When we are in college and our tutor is going through what is to be done on tasks in the assignments, I always
make sure to have notes written down in my books, as this way I am able to follow constructions clearly. As well
as being able to help others and support them.
Body Language ability to match body language appropriately to what is being said verbally
Body language (eye contact, posture, movement, expression, etc) in presentations, socially, on holidays, at work.
When I have been in a formal situation, my body language will be to sit up straight, hands resting on my lap and
eyes focused on the person who is speaking. When I am speaking I will make sure I am clear and loud so that the
person I am speaking to understands me. I always make sure to nod to show the person speaking that I am
acknowledging what is being said. This has occurred when I was in my interview at Morrisons as I had to be
professional and make sure to answer all questions in a professional manner with examples.

WORKING WITH OTHERS

Working with others is a skill highly valued by employers. Suitable evidence for this skill need not be limited to work experience. You should
think of all aspects of your work, studies and social life.
Cooperation - Ability to collaborate effectively within a team
You may have developed this skill through your involvement with, group project work during your course, team games, Duke of Edinburgh
Award Scheme, committee work etc.
I have collaborated within a team when I did the jobs fair at Shipley College. With this I had to make sure that my
small team, which was marketing, had all tasks completed on time and that we advertised clearly to college
students. As a whole team I had to make sure to always keep the project manager up to date with what was going
on in my team.

Negotiation - Ability to reach a mutually satisfactory outcome through compromise

It is likely that you will have used this skill in many aspect of your day-to-day life. Try to think of situations where you have wanted
something and the person you have been dealing with has been reluctant to give it to you. This is very common when dealing with
bureaucracy. E.g. dealing with problems about welfare benefits, dealing with a landlord, extending an overdraft. You might have been in
more formal negotiating situations such as getting sponsorship for a project, representing students on university committees, student union
work etc.

I have been involved in negotiation before when running our business jobs fair event, because we had to discuss
where we were going to have the event. I was involved in deciding whether we were going to go with having a free
venue or an expensive one that wasnt part of Shipley College. So it was up to us to negotiate with a tutor on
getting the best venue, so we chose the venue within Shipley College because more students would attend.
Sensitivity- Ability to respond appropriately to individual differences, e.g., age, gender, etc.
You many have developed this skill through working on a student nightline or help line, being a course or hall rep, committee work etc.
Depending on what age group I am talking to, the way I speak changes. As if I am talking to an employee I will
make sure to speak in a professional manner, whereas if I am speaking to a child I will make sure that I talk in a
way that they will understand me, this is because children may not know big words at a young age.
Leadership - Ability to encourage and motivate others
Obvious examples include: being a team captain, drama directing, chairing a committee etc. Less obvious examples include: editing a magazine, cocoordinating the activities of a group who are planning a social event etc.

I have taken leadership when running the jobs fair event, as I was the manager of the marketing team.

APPLICATION OF NUMBER
Calculations
- Ability to use a calculator or PC to make calculations
Interpretation - Ability to interpret descriptive statistics, e.g. ratios percentages, means, standard deviations
- Ability to interpret inferential statistics, e.g., confidence intervals, statistical significance, effect size
Application
-Ability to organize and present numerical data in an appropriate manner
You can draw evidence directly from your degree if a high level of numeric or mathematical ability is an essential part of your programme of
study. If this is not the case you can demonstrate this skill by GCSE/AS/A level Maths, a job involving a significant amount of work with
numerical data, a leisure or extra- curricular activity that involves manipulating figures etc.

I have numerical skills, as I have done maths all throughout my educational years and I have passed my maths this year in
June.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
File Management Techniques - Ability to create, store and retrieve files
Have you ever - Saved a file to disk to print in university?
Accessed information on the university network?
Word Processing - Ability to use a word processing package to produce a variety of formats of documents
Have you produced letters, CVs, coursework, posters, and flyers?
When I studied at St Joseph's we would practice letters in English, so I have an idea of what they need to involve.
I have written my CV at Shipley College in centre of excellence, I created my CV earlier this year and always go
back to it and update it. I have been doing coursework since I started my business level 3 course last September
at Shipley College. I've created posters throughout school and then one was created for the jobs fair event.
Spreadsheets - Ability to use a spreadsheet to record and manipulate different sets of data
Can you: -Input information? , Produce graphs? , Use formula to calculate averages, maximums, totals etc?
Databases - Ability to retrieve information from a database/ Ability to create a database
Can you: - Run queries?, View reports? , Use macros, Use tables to view the information you want? etc
Can you: - Create tables?, Create relationships?, Design queries? Etc.

Presentations - Ability to create and display a PowerPoint presentation

Have you ever used PowerPoint to produce a presentation for a lecture/tutorial?
Can you produce a presentation with graphics/moving images?
I have created powerpoints for some of my assignments at Shipley College and I have created them when I had IT
lessons at school.
When I was in school we would create powerpoints and we'd practice placing moving images into the slides and
inserting videos.
Information and Communication - Ability to send and receive email
Can you use web mail such as Hotmail?
Have you used windows based email such as MS Outlook or Pegasus
I have a college email and a personal email. I have received and sent emails on both of my email addresses.
Ability to send and receive attachments as email
Have you forwarded your CV to an employer?
Forwarded coursework to a lecturer?
I haven't forwarded my CV to an employee but some employers come into the centre of excellence and have said
that we are able to send them our CVs and they have a look, I am thinking of sending mine to an employer.
Ability to use an internet browser e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL
Have you checked your exam results on the student web?
Have you researched coursework on the web?
Ability to download files from the internet and transfer to WP
Have you downloaded course notes from the web?
Downloaded past exam papers?
Filled in an application form you have downloaded from the web?
When I had completed my maths GCSE exam, I went online on the students web to collect my results. For a lot of
my assignments I have to do research and I will use the Internet to collect the information.
Ability to use a search engine e.g. Altavista, Google
Have you used a search engine when: researching coursework?, Looking for a job?, Shopping online? Etc.

I use google on a daily basis, I use google for my coursework and just in general, like for social media or
shopping.

PROBLEM SOLVING
Creativity - Ability to generate new ideas or conceive existing ideas in a new way
Perhaps you have found a new way of approaching your coursework or taken over a project from someone else bringing a fresh approach to
achieving a goal. Do you produce publicity materials for a charity?
I first started off doing my coursework by just writing notes and then going straight into the assignment, whereas
now I will collect my notes, write a quick draft of what I want to write in my assignment and then write the final
piece on google docs. This way I can read over it before handing it in.
Organisation and Planning - Ability to set down a systematic sequence of activities and carry them through in an effective manner
Perhaps you have organised a group holiday or club event; do you use a diary or action plan for successful study/revision?
I have started using a diary as this way I am able to write down what is happening one day and this way I know
what needs to be done.
Research - Ability to gather information in a systematic way to establish certain facts or principles
Perhaps you have looked into different options for a place at university live or conducted research for an assignment / project. Writing an
article for a journal or magazine.
I have used different resources to collect data and information, as this way I will be able to see which website
gives the best information needed and which I find best to use.
Analysis - Ability to understand and summarise information (Detailed examination of structure and content)
Perhaps you enjoy digging into or interrogating a topic or concept for better awareness such as reading articles in a broadsheet paper or
professional journal. Consider your examples of independent study such as academic essays and dissertations.
When given data to look at I am able to look over it and gather the information that I need and pick out parts that
are the most important.
Initiative - Ability to initiate, take decisions and act resourcefully

Do you undertake tasks in your part-time job without waiting for someone else to give the order? Deciding to create your own website or
start a new club
For my job I will go in and start a task immediately as I don't want to just stand around and seem like I am
waiting to be told what to do. Although I will usually ask my manager beforehand what they would like me to do
that day and this is because I am still in training for my job.

IMPROVE OWN LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE

Self Management
Self-awareness ability to identify and reflect on own strengths and weaknesses in relation to:
Personal Development: Are you confident in expressing yourself or is this something you need to work on? Are you fully aware
of your core strengths ie., skills, experience knowledge and attributes that are your unique selling points in the employment market.
Educational Development: Do you regularly review your progress against targets you set yourself ? Do you make good use of
your time when working on assignments or do you need to be more organized?
Career Development: Do you have a career plan? Do you have an up-to-date, well-organized, concise and accurate CV which
clearly sells your strengths? Do you have any part-time jobs, or do voluntary work, that has developed your employability skills?
I am able to look back at my work and analyse what I think went well and what I feel could have gone better.
From this I will then figure out what I need to work on and how I am going to go about something next time. For
example in the jobs fair event the advertising was a little short notice so next time I will make sure to advertise an
event at least 2-3 weeks before to give people plenty of notice.
Effective learning ability to learn from a range of situations and apply learning in a variety of contexts
Have you developed skills from a hobby or sport that you have transferred across to your academic studies?
Reasoning skills ability to defend argument using logical and systematic thinking based on sound evidence
Do you make best use of a wide range of sources from books and articles when presenting arguments in essays and seminars?
When I written debates before in college and at school, I have always made sure to read information from both
sides of the story, this way I am able to get all the facts needed.
Reflection ability to reflect on and critique own performance
Do you make use of feedback received from one assignment to help you plan the next assignment? Do you regularly take dedicated time out
to reflect more deeply on your learning? Are you able to accept and learn from failure in a positive manner?

I am able to reflect on and critique my own performance as in school when I did drama I would have to look back
and say what I think I did good at and what I think needs to be worked on.
This is always good because I am able to pick out my strengths and weaknesses on my own rather than having to
be told.
Study Skills - Ability to manage and prioritise time to meet deadlines
- Ability to identify relevant sources of information, including people and reference material
- Ability to use a library to find books and journal articles
- Ability to take notes, organize them, and integrate them with other sources of information
- Ability to reference materials using an appropriate system, e.g., Harvard or Vancouver
These are very specific statements and you should be able to provide the required evidence. The kinds of questions you should be asking
yourself are: - Do you use a timetable to organize assignments and prepare for exams?, Do you use a diary to record times and locations of
classes and adviser of study sessions? Are you fully aware of how you learn most effectively and make full use of the current range of
learning opportunities available to you? etc.
I always make sure that I am meeting my deadlines and getting my work in when it is due, this way I am not
allowing it to build up or stress me out. When I am collecting information I will always use google and I will
sometimes use the college library to get the book that I am needing. I will always make notes in lessons so that I
know what I am doing throughout my work. When I have completed an assignment I will make sure to always
Harvard reference everything.
