2011 SPA EE was sold and left the group;
2013 SPA IT was sold and left the group;

2014 Small Planet Group was established;
2015 SPA Thailand is established.

For further information on the Small Planet Airlines Story refer to

http://www.smallplanet.aero/en/about-us.html

Today we have three main offices in Vilnius, Warsaw and Bangkok. As well as three different AOCs issued by Lithuanian, Polish and Thai authorities. Summer is our top season
and in order to avoid the seasonality we have launched Small Planet Airlines Thailand. We
are the first airline in the world to have AOCs in different continents and move its fleet
between them while flying under the same brand. Our fleet has been growing year on year
as do our ambitions. We do not want to stop!

ACTIVITY 1: SMALL PLANET AIRLINES

During 2007-2013 Small Planet Airlines was a member of Avia Solutions Group. SPA
left Avia Solution Group in Spring 2013. Vytautas Kaikaris and Andrius Staniulis became
the main shareholders of SPA LT and SPA PL. Since then SPA is independent of any
group and were very proud of it! Moreover, the holding company Small Planet Group
was established in 2014. It was to take ownership of the Small Planet Airlines of Lithuania and Poland, along with other aviation related investments.
The secret of Small Planet Airlines success is not only the best
prices and flexibility, but also our ambition to start customers
holiday right here: on board our flights. Our colorful brand represents our nature and the atmosphere we create. Small Planet
Airlines has an aim to be a different leisure airline driven by a
simple and powerful question. It is rarely asked in boardrooms of
the airline companies: a Why not? question. Why? is a bad
question. Why not? is a great question. A question that opens

up the airline business to change and bit of fun. After all, this world has got enough of
boring airlines already, hasnt it?

Fleet
Our fleet size almost doubles every two years. Such growth trend is called Moores law and
is usually used to describe the growth of IT companies. In the airline business, or in fact
any other industries except for IT, the growth of this rate is rarely observed. But not for
Small Planet Airlines our four years of history show a steep growth trend.

About Small Planet Airlines

Cabin Crew seats - Cabin Crew seats are

pull-down types that will automatically return
to the stowed position when unoccupied. A
combination seatbelt/shoulder harness and
a padded headrest are installed on the seat.

ACTIVITY 2: OUR FLEET

Flight Crew seats -The Flight Deck seats can

be locked in any desired position. Horizontal and vertical adjustment is possible. The
armrest can be folded upwards. To adjust
the seat, pull the fore/aft lever located at the
base of each Flight Crew members seat. The
harness can be locked into position by pushing the inertia lock handle forward (inboard
of each seat).

________________________________________________________________________________________

Passenger cabin - Standard configuration of

the Boeing 737-300 and the Airbus A320 is six forward facing seats - two sets of triple
seat units left and right. The seats are identified by row numbers and lettered A,B,C on
the left and D,E,F on the right.
Seat belts - Seat belts are equipped with quick release buckles and are adjustable to
accommodate passengers of all builds except those who are abnormally obese. In
these cases, Infant/Extension seat belts must be used. These seat belts also double up
as child restraints and must be used whenever infants under the age of 2 are on board.
Cabin Crew must ensure that these seat belts are returned to the stowage after use, as
they are a mandatory item of emergency equipment.
Stowage areas - Overhead lockers are fitted throughout the length of the cabin and
provide stowage for hats, coats and light hand baggage. The compartments vary in size
and the maximum weights for the contents of the lockers are displayed in each locker.
Compartment lids latch at the bottom and have hinges at the top. To open a locker,
depress or lift the catch and the lid will rise. When closing, gently lower the lid until it
engages in the latch. Do not slam the overhead lockers shut as this could damage the
locking mechanism.
Overhead lockers must be securely fastened before take-off and landing and only
opened during flight for access.
Toilets - Depending on type of the a/c, two toilets (B737) or three toilets (A320) are provided. Each toilet has an independent toilet waste system. Toilet waste is stored in a tank
in each toilet. Each toilet waste tank has a motor pump filter unit that pumps filtered
flushing fluid into the toilet bowl. Activating the toilet flush handle powers the pump for
ten seconds. Other facilities provided are cool air vents, stowage areas, receptacles for
paper towels and amenities. A return to seat sign is situated in a panel above the sink,
together with a Cabin Crew call button.

We observed a growth trend at Small Planet Airlines for the past four years. How is it
called and what does it mean?

work done;
Company plans are shared. Every managers door is always open for questions to be
answered. You can even ask your managers for meetings to be held if you do not have
any be proactive.
Development & career opportunities exist. We believe that high performance people
are self improving by experience, observation, reading and discussing. We do not believe
in formal career planning: we want people to manage their careers, not the company.
However we never forget our A+ performers. Together we look to find work that our A+
performers would love to do this is how we provide interesting career progression.

All about being Cabin Crew

ALL ABOUT BEING

CABIN CREW
A TYPICAL DAY OF THE CABIN CREW
Your flight departs at 07:30 to Edinburgh and you must be ready to start your pre-flight
briefing at the set time (different in bases) before departure, lets take preflight briefing
time is 1 hour before departure; in this case this would be 06:30 - this means going to
bed early the night before!
During your pre-flight briefing you will be told all you need to know about the flight that
day. Together with all crew you will discuss the Question of the week.
Once on board, the crew will check that all the emergency equipment is on board, correctly stowed and in date. A thorough security check must also be carried out.
When the aircraft has been prepared, the passengers will be called for from the terminal. Once they have all been greeted and seated the doors will be closed and the safety
demonstration will begin.
Before you can sit down for take-off, the passengers must be checked to ensure that
their seat belts are fastened, their seat backs are upright with their armrests down and
their tables stowed. Hand baggage must also be stowed in approved stowage areas.
Once the cabin has been prepared for takeoff and all checks are complete you must
take your seat and fit your harness.
After take-off you will prepare for the service and start serving the passengers. During
the flight you and your crew are there to deal with passenger problems as they arise,
sell drinks, snacks and gifts and ensure that all relevant paperwork is completed. You
must also continue to look after the needs of the passengers for the duration of the
flight. Above all else we must keep the passengers safe and happy.
When the fasten seat belt sign is on, you will check the passengers once again and
take your seat for landing.
Once on the ground and the passengers have bid farewell and have disembarked, you
will do another security check, clean the aircraft and then start all over again ready for
the next sector.

IMAGE AND UNIFORM

DRESS CODE NON OPERATING
DUTIES
Dress code during positioning
When cabin crew travel as a passenger to start their duty at another airport it is called
positioning.
When boarding the aircraft, throughout the flight and disembarking you must not show
over-familiarity with the whole crew and must act in a professional manner at all times.
If you are travelling in uniform all uniform standards and rules must be adhered to; this
includes no smoking and not consuming alcohol, regardless of when your duty is to commence or has already finished. You are permitted to consume the in-flight meal or snack.
However, you must behave with discretion at all times. The dress code for positioning is
smart casual this means you must wear clothes which are suitable for working in an
office environment.
For detailed appearance requirements please check the
Passionate Service Standard Chapter 4.1

Jeans may be worn; however they must be smart, clean and not have any rips or tears.

Issuing of the uniform

Bare midriffs/very short skirts or shorts/tank tops/flip flops/tracksuits are UNACCEPTABLE.

The process of trying on uniforms and identifying

standard. Therefore please ensure you read and understand all of the uniform and
grooming regulations before you attend the training course.
Please note that a lot of people have difficulty in finding the correct Cabin Crew shoes.
Please see Passionate Service Standard as to what shoes are acceptable. If you have
ANY doubt about whether the shoes you have bought are acceptable or not, show them
to one of the trainers during your training course. As you can see, uniform and appearance regulations are very important at Small Planet Airlines and you will be monitored
throughout your training course on this.
If you have any questions or are unsure about what is appropriate, please contact one
of the Ambassadors, your base supervisor or Manager.
Dress code for the office duties
For the office work the dress code is Smart office. Remember flip flops, shorts are
allowed only for beach offices, leggings and track suits very common for offices which
take place in the gym. Miniskirts, leather pants, deep neckline or glitters looks very nice
if your office is in the disco.

UNIFORM
First impressions are very important and give customers confidence in Small Planet
Airlines as an airline. Your mood and your uniform create an overall appearance, which
represents our brand and is a huge part of Small Planet Airlines identity. The uniform
presents the image of our company and therefore the highest standard of personal
appearance is required at all times.

at all times.
Uniform dry cleaning and reimbursement of expenses
According to the agreed procedure with the employer, cabin crew might use Uniform cleaning
vouchers or have cleaning expenses reimbursed by SPA depending on the base. SPA reimburses one uniform dry cleaning per month.
If usage of Uniform cleaning vouchers is approved in your base:
When submitting uniform for dry cleaning services CC together with uniform items must provide Uniform cleaning voucher with marked uniform parts which should be dry cleaned. Information regarding prices of dry cleaning services is received from Base Supervisor.
Following information must be indicated in the Uniform cleaning voucher:
-

Date of dry cleaning

Name and surname of CA
Price of dry cleaning
Uniform items being cleaned

When submitting Uniform cleaning voucher it has to be signed by CC and an employee of the
dry cleaning company.
The first part of the Uniform cleaning voucher is kept by CC the second part is given to an employee of dry cleaning company. Uniform cleaning vouchers are taken from the Briefing room.
CC takes vouchers based on their need for uniform dry cleaning. Using cleaning vouchers for
cleaning personal clothing is prohibited.

For detailed appearance requirements please check the

Passionate Service Standard Chapter 4.1
38

39

If usage of Uniform cleaning vouchers is not approved in your base:

All about being Cabin Crew

dismissal.
The use of intoxicants, including alcoholic drinks by any person while on duty, or in the
case of flight crew members, within 8 hours prior to duty, is prohibited.

Conduct in uniform

When being out of base (on duty travel) local laws of alcohol consumption must be strictly
followed, as breaking any laws (in public places or in hotel rooms) will have severe consequences for the person involved and for the company.

It is equally important to meet the uniform requirements whenever you are carrying
out your duties as it is to know how to behave in public while representing Small Planet
Airlines.

The removal of alcoholic drinks or any other drinks from the bar is strictly prohibited and
is considered as theft. This includes the practice of give away / goody bags to anybody
travelling onboard the aircraft.

Desirable behaviour:

No alcohol or containers for alcohol may be taken into the flight deck
at any time. Any Duty Free alcohol or Duty Paid alcohol containers purchased by crew members must have their original seal and receipt intact.

- All staff are required to report for duty, dressed correctly with uniform
in good repair, clean and worn to company standard. Uniform must be
worn to the guidelines at all times, including the crew room.

When visiting different countries whilst away from base, all crew must
ensure they are aware of the age restrictions for consuming alcohol.

- All staff must behave in a calm and confident fashion when dealing
with the general public.

The law must be strictly adhered to, as breaking any laws in place will
have severe consequences from both the country involved and Small
Planet Airlines.

- A friendly and sincere greeting must be given to the public on every

occasion.
- All staff must offer assistance whenever possible, even, when off
duty (for example: for lunch): you are still in uniform, which means
that you are still representing our company.

Crew should also be aware that within their hotel room, if under age
crew are found to be drinking alcohol the person who has been allocated that particular room will be held responsible along with the underage
crew member.

- Uniformity of appearance must be maintained when groups of staff

are together i.e. at check in or walking through the airport.
Smoking
All uniformed staff must remember that smoking in uniform is not
permitted at any time whilst in the view of the public. Smoking is not permitted in
the crew room or company/office buildings, except for designated smoking areas at

Food & Beverage Consumption

Food and drink (non-alcoholic) may be consumed in the galley out of
passenger sight with the galley curtain closed where applicable, providing the in-flight service has been completed.
Staff in uniform must also not consume food or beverages in public areas, except when
sitting down at a restaurant or caf. Anyone who is required to take a lunch/meal at a
public place in uniform during his or her day must behave with discretion at all times.
Chewing
The chewing of gum or visibly chewing a sweet is not permitted whenever in view of the
public. Walking and eating in uniform is not permitted.
Reading Papers, Magazines or Books
Your primary role onboard the aircraft is safety, closely followed by customer service.

43

All about being Cabin Crew

By reading newspapers, magazines or books your focus has been drawn away from two
key areas of responsibilities. Due to the length of flights it is acceptable for crew whilst
on their break to read; however it must be pointed out that at all times whilst on the
aircraft the crew monitor safety regulations and Passenger welfare.

with fellow crew members are professional and do not encompass operational, flight safety or performance issues which may be overheard by revenue passengers.

Gambling

During your rest period onboard you are still visible to the passenger so must continue
to present yourselves in a professional conduct, this includes your uniform and outward
behavior.

Gambling while in uniform is strictly forbidden. This includes slot machines, arcade
areas and purchasing the lottery.
Posture
Uniform wearers must adopt good posture in public.
Slouching, crossing or folding arms, hands in pockets, leaning against
doorways, work tops, walls etc. must be avoided. When seated, staff
in uniform must not sprawl, hunch shoulders, rest feet on furniture or
other equipment.
Mobile Telephones
Mobile telephones are part of everyday life and we all depend on them
to some extent. However please remember that there are times when
your discretion will be needed.
Your mobile must be switched off during your pre-flight briefing &
post flight debrief as all your attention must be given to your colleagues. When taking telephone calls ensure you do not stand in or
near the briefing / debriefing area disturbing your colleagues who are
working.
You may use your mobile telephone as long as you observe all SEP
procedures (i.e. Refueling drill) and do not use your mobile when a
main engine is running or when passengers are onboard. You must
also ensure you are not neglecting your duties as a crew member. You
must switch off your mobile if requested by a SCC or a Flight Crew member.

In Flight Rest

Press & Media Liaison

Staff are not authorized to make comments or enter into discussion with members of
press and media on behalf of Small Planet Airlines. In cases of unavoidable encounter with the press, you should refer them to the Small
Planet Airlines Brand Manager (Head of In-Flight Division), who handles
all media enquiries.
In the event of serious incident involving Small Planet Airlines or aircraft
personnel, you must refrain from speculations and comments, remain
discrete and professional. Please remember that comments of this nature may be overheard and cause confusion between passengers or be
passed down to media.
If you are involved in an accident or incident, your name will not be
released to the media without your express permission.
Personal Hygiene
Staff must take care not to offend customers and colleagues through
lack of personal hygiene. Personal cleanliness is absolutely essential.
Deodorants/antiperspirants should be used to prevent body odor. Dental hygiene must be attended to and spicy foods avoided prior to/during
duty. Oral freshness is essential and therefore the use of breath fresheners is recommended.

Sitting In Cabin
Operating crew members must not sit in the cabin whilst passengers are onboard to
read, eat and talk to colleagues or to complete paperwork. This is considered unprofessional and is not acceptable behavior. It is acceptable for crewmembers to take a
break in the galley area with the curtains closed as long as you are mindful of passenger
requests and observant of safety.
You may only occupy a seat in the passenger cabin when in uniform if you are travelling
as a passenger. Whilst travelling as a passenger, you must ensure that conversations

Your crew bags and case should only be left in places:

All about being Cabin Crew

- Where they may be observed, for security reasons.

- Where they are not going to cause an accident or obstruction to your colleagues.

BRIEFING ROOM APPEARANCE

The briefing room is the meeting place for all crew before a flight. In the briefing room
you will conduct your pre-flight brief, meet your colleagues, gather all the information you
need for the days flight and collect any special equipment you may be required to take
to the aircraft. The briefing room is a place for discussion to both organize the days flight
and to also discuss any issues that may have occurred on the flight in a debrief. It is the
responsibility of all who use the briefing room to ensure it is kept tidy and organized at all
times as it is used by all cabin crew and flight crew.
Tables
Should be left with the chairs tucked in and rubbish placed in the bin.
Office Recycling
Be mindful of our recycling procedure and place your rubbish in the appropriate bins

aircraft.

It is recommended that crew bag contents are kept to a minimum and only the above
items should be carried.

46

47

How do you keep your body fit?

All about being Cabin Crew

Eat sensibly and avoid picking.

During the flight drink lots of water.
Take all opportunities to get sufficient sleep.
Continue any exercise habits you already have.
Be aware that if you are feeling below par, this will
be accentuated greatly at altitude.
By keeping your body fit you can not only lengthen
your life, but also increase your capacity to cope
with stress and have a positive effect on your brain.

CABIN CREW HEALTH

PRECAUTIONS
Alcohol - While the consumption of alcohol may be socially acceptable, its detrimental
effect on human skills and efficiency cannot be under-estimated particularly in relation to
flying duties. Alcohol consumption is not permitted whilst on duty or in the 8 hours before
reporting for duty - THIS INCLUDES TRAINING.

LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF

EATING HABITS
A flying timetable, as the example shows, does not always fit in with your normal eating
pattern. You will need to think about planning your meals around your flights, ensuring
that you have eaten enough before work!
Pressurization: At a height of 35,000 - 40,000 feet in the air the aircraft cabin air is
much thinner (i.e. less oxygen). To enable the crew and passengers to breathe comfortably the aircraft has been pressurized. The aircraft interior is pressurized to the equivalent of 6,000 - 8,000 feet of altitude. Due to less pressure around your body you will
swell making tight clothing and ill-fitting shoes extremely uncomfortable. As you can
imagine the job entails a great deal of walking. It is critical; therefore, that you have
comfortable shoes and look after you feet!

48

For detailed Crew Health Precautions requirements please

check the OM A 6 Crew Health Precautions

Narcotics and/or drugs - The use of narcotics that have not been prescribed by a medical
practitioner is expressly forbidden at any time. The above guidance also applies to sleep
inducing drugs.

Medication - Many medications may have adverse effects on the nervous system, which
may be more evident in flight than on the ground. As a general rule, if a crew member
finds it necessary to take, or has been prescribed some form of medication, his or her
fitness to fly must be suspect, and he or she should seek medical advice before continuing
with flying duties.
Many drugs lower operational efficiency and impair judgment and reaction time. Crew
members should be aware that many drugs, their dosage and use, while suitable for family members and passengers may be unsuitable for crew members.
Commonly prescribed drugs in the following classes may have prolonged effects on performance:
Antihistamines contained in some common cold cures, anti-motion sickness tablets
and medicines for the alleviation of allergic conditions.
Sleeping tablets or sedatives.
Tranquillizers.
Stimulants used to prevent drowsiness and to curb appetite.
Analgesics.
Antibiotic, cortisone, steroids.

49

Anesthetics - Cabin Crew must not operate:

All about being Cabin Crew

This period will vary depending on individual circumstances but will usually be at least
24 hours. The dentist or anesthetist should be asked about this.
Immunization - Medical advice is to be sought concerning the period to be observed
before returning to flying duties following immunization. There are no requirements for
immunization for crew members operating within the European/ Mediterranean Region
on the routes that Small Planet Airlines operate. However, crew members may choose
to maintain inoculation against the following:
Hepatitis
Tetanus
Meningitis
Poliomyelitis
Typhoid or Paratyphoid
Blood donation - Recent blood donation is incompatible with flying. Cabin Crew members should not normally act as blood donors.

Surgical procedures - Aeromedical advice should be sought prior to returning to flying

duties following any surgical procedure.
Personal hygiene - All of us like to think of ourselves as being clean people and would be
insulted if anyone said that we were dirty. However, in bacterial terms we are! Bacteria live
on us and to avoid spreading them, it is important to follow a few simple rules.
1. Keep your hands clean by washing them regularly, particularly after:
Using the toilet
Eating food
Handling dirty equipment, etc

Deep sea diving - Crew members are warned of the dangers of mixing diving and flying. It is recommended that any diving involving the use of aqua-lungs is avoided for
24 hours prior to undertaking a flying duty.

Using a handkerchief

Meals - Sensible precautions should be taken to avoid the risk of food poisoning (e.g.
from shellfish of dubious freshness). Particularly when meals are taken, or uplifted,
during en route stops.

Applying make-up.

Pilots operating together should select different items from the menu to reduce the
possibility that both of them could become incapacitated. In flight the Commander and
First Officer must not take their meals at the same time. In hot climates particular care
should be taken with the following:
Fresh salads, uncooked vegetables or ice cream unless they are known to have been
hygienically prepared and handled.
Watermelon, thin skinned, over ripe or bruised
fruit, or fruit which has been left cut.
Fish, unless cooked shortly after being caught.
Raw or under-cooked meat or fish.
Dishes prepared with cream.
Ice should not be added to drinks unless it
is known to have been hygienically made and
handled.
Sleep and rest - Although the controls on flight
and duty periods are intended to ensure that
adequate opportunities are provided for crew
members to obtain rest and sleep, individuals
should ensure that proper advantage is taken of
such opportunities.
50

Fitness - No individual shall act as a member of the Cabin Crew of a Company aircraft if,
for any reason, his physical or mental condition is such that it could endanger the safety
of the aircraft or its occupants.

Brushing, combing or handling your hair

2. Do not handle food if you are suffering from:

Diarrhea
Spots, boils, cut on the skin of your hands or forearms.
3. General guidelines:
Ensure that the uniform you are wearing conforms to the appearance regulations. Excessive amounts of jewelry harbor bacteria in the cracks and crevices
Do not comb, brush or handle your hair in the galley
Wear a blue waterproof plaster to cover minor cuts on your hands or forearms
Keep your uniform as clean as possible and ensure that it is cleaned as often as necessary.
Sun Bathing - a high factor sun protection lotion/cream must be used to minimize sun
burn and skin damage. Moisturizer or after sun should be applied to dry skin.
Sunburn skin is not only extremely uncomfortable but is not acceptable in uniform.

51

Crew must advise Crew Dispatch as soon as possible of any late crew members to reduce
the possibility of a late departure to the flight. All crew are required to check in prior to
commencing their duties.

All about being Cabin Crew

If you are late for report you should contact Crew Dispatch immediately to advise your
expected time of arrival. Crew Dispatch may request that you proceed immediately to
the airport, park at your own expense in the public car park and make your way through
airport security directly to the aircraft. Late crew will either be briefed in the crew room or
on the aircraft. The SCC must complete an appraisal on the crew member when returning
back to base.
Outstation
If you or one of your crew is late for report at an outstation you should contact your SCC or
Captain as well as advising Crew Dispatch. A report will be required from the SCC to advise
the circumstances of the late report.

REMOVAL OF ITEMS FROM

THE AIRCRAFT
CONDUCT CODE
Whilst Small Planet Airlines does not intend to impose unreasonable rules of conduct
on employees, certain standards of behavior are necessary to maintain good order and
discipline. This is in the interests of all who work for the Company.
High levels of conduct and discipline are expected from all employees whilst on and off
duty, at base and away from base on company business. However from time to time, it
may be necessary to take action against individuals whose behavior or performance is
deemed unacceptable.

PUNCTUALITY/ LATE REPORT

All crew members must maintain good time keeping practices. Late reports cause unnecessary roster changes to your colleagues who may have been called upon to cover
your duty and risk delaying flight departures.
Being late for duty can lead to disciplinary actions.

52

Crew members are NOT permitted to remove anything from the aircraft, with the exceptions of duty free goods they have purchased (including crew sales bags) and defective
items being removed from the aircraft for the attention of a certain department which are
not an Engineering responsibility. All items purchased by Crew onboard the aircraft must
be accompanied with a receipt.
Down route
Crew are permitted to take off the aircraft 1 bottle of crew water each when staying down
route. This is the only exception to the above removal of items from the aircraft.
The removal of dry stores items from the aircraft is prohibited. This includes any cabin
or catering equipment.
Cabin Crew are also not to give any dry stores items to third party employees (Loaders,
Ground Agents, Staff Travel Companions) for removal from the aircraft. This includes any
cabin or catering equipment.
Any person removing items or discovered to be giving away items for removal from the
aircraft either at an outstation or upon return to base will be subject to disciplinary action
as this is considered as theft.

SECURITY SEARCH POLICY

Small Planet Airlines reserves the right to carry out random searches of company bags
and uniform items. This will be undertaken by authorized staff. Should any unauthorized

53

company property be found in a crew members possession they will be immediately

suspended pending an investigation which could lead to disciplinary action.

All about being Cabin Crew

Full Security Search Procedure is presented to you by your direct employer

DAMAGE TO COMPANY PROPERTY

Willful Damage
Any willful defacement or damage of company notices, furniture, aircraft or property is
considered as a disciplinary offence and action will be taken against the crew member.
Placing feet on chairs, passenger seats, against walls or aircraft bulkheads is unacceptable behavior. Throwing away undamaged, ratable catering or aircraft equipment is
considered a disciplinary offence.
Graffiti on aircraft catering boxes, internal cabin doors or bulkheads is considered as
willful damage to company property. This is extremely costly and time consuming to
arrange the removal of such. This is considered a disciplinary offence.
Accidental
Any accidental damage to company property in the crew room should be reported immediately to your Base Supervisor or Cabin Crew Manager in writing or by Flight Report.
If accidental damage occurs once on board the aircraft, all details must be noted in the
Cabin Defects Log and Flight Report.

INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY

(IT) TRAINING
The cabin crew training program includes an IT training which introduces you to a dedicated Cabin Crew website called the Crew Connex (CCX). The portal features several
services to help you manage your flight-related operations.
The cabin crew IT training has no pre-requisites. However, basic familiarity with computers
and their usage and Internet browsing skills makes the training easier and much more
enjoyable. If you suspect that you lack these basic skills, it would be to your advantage to
begin developing these skills as early as possible, preferably before you start your cabin
crew training.
Access to the Cabin Crew Portal is granted to you on the Introduction Day of training. You
will learn how to access the portal by using a user name and a password. In addition to
accessing the Cabin Crew Portal, the IT training includes a session covering emails and
their use. During the training, you are expected to use the Small Planet Airlines email
application to communicate with your managers, trainers and other colleagues within the
business. If you are not familiar with emails it will be helpful to start learning about it before the training. Free email accounts can be created over the Internet almost everywhere
in the world. Some of the famous free Internet email providers are Hotmail, Yahoo, and

GREENWICH
MEAN TIME
(GMT)
All places on the globe have a latitude
(their distance North or South of the
Equator) and a longitude (their distance
East or West of the Greenwich Meridian).
As Greenwich, England is zero degrees
longitude, time is measured from this
point and is defined as Greenwich Mean
Time (GMT).
GMT is used in the aviation industry. It
may also be referred to as Zulu Time (ZT)
or Universal Time Coordinated (UTC).
Time east of Greenwich is GMT plus (+)

THE 24-HOUR CLOCK

THE PHONETIC ALPHABET

The time format used in aviation is the 24-hour clock, whereby time is recorded by
numbers only and not am and pm. This is also referred to as military time, army
time or railway time. Airlines use this in their flight schedules and rosters. The diagram
below gives an indication how to use the 24-hour clock.

The phonetic alphabet is a set of words used instead of alphabetic letters in radio communication. Each word stands for its initial letter and is used internationally by aircraft,
maritime units, amateur radio operators and the military. It is used in two-way radio
communications to help reduce the affects of noise, distorted audio and radio operator
accents.
For instance, some letters which can easily be confused are D and B. By using the
phonetic alphabet, Delta and Bravo, these are easily distinguished.
For example, when the Captain is calling the Air Traffic Control tower to identify the aircraft he will use the number on the tail e.g. A6 EAC, and pronounce it as Alpha Six Echo
Alpha Charlie
It is important that this Phonetic Alphabet is known.

Examples:
Before Midday
(Figures inside the clock face)

After Midday
(Figures in red outside the clock face)

1.00 am is 0100

3.00 pm is 1500

6.30 am is 0630

9.45 pm is 2145
