ready to be used in the industry of video games or claymation they must know three
things. First they must know the entirety of sculpting process. Second they must know
what kinds of clay require wire armatures along with how to create wire armatures
Lastly the sculptor must understand the use of line in sculpture which would allow for
the full creation of the final product.
In sculpture the sketch is incredibly important since allows the artist to make
finalizations on the pose along with adjusting the size and proportions for the maquette
(Gluszek). Along with sketching important steps to take in the building is to make sure
that you know all of your resources, think about size and scale, along with the material
and finish (Sy). Character designing requires multiple thought processes including
shape, distribution, and rhythmic repetitions of color (Lade). Once a portion of the body
is almost fully or completely formed the process of detailing begins, this is the process
of adding folds to clothing, creases in the skin, and hair (Gluszek). Another important
aspect of the maquette is the pose which should reflect the character personality and
should also include small little background details such as a barrel or an ammo crate.
Sculpting also requires knowledge of basic shapes that can be used to form the rough
body, these shapes can include balls, eggs, ovals, discs, and cylinders. (Sy).
Most maquettes that are done or seem like they are done in clay are actually not
done in complete clay. Under the clay skin is a skeleton made of wire normally which is
used to give the maquette a way to be supported internally along with giving it form
(Holland). When creating an armature a good way to start is to draw a small skeleton
inside of the sketches that you made in order to create the design for the armature
(Lade). The construction of the armature is considered to be step two right after the
gathering of all of the materials before you begin the sculpting process (Sy). Ceramic
clays is a form which doesnt require an armature for support however oil based clays
need this support in order to stay without falling apart. In order for a wire armature to be
successful it has to be flexible in order to allow movement and adjusting when working
on the sculpture (Holland). Due to the idea of a maquette being something that is
adjustable to fit the needs of the art director a wire armature is a must since oil clays will
be required in order to make proper adjustments over time.
Using lines in sculpture can allow for a sense of motion in the work. It is also one
of the most basic elements of art and can allow for some beautiful compositions using
just the repetitive nature of lines (Wagner). Line is one of the most basic elements of art
and combined with other elements it creates a sense of unity along with the creation of
an exciting piece (Lade). The usage of line creates implied repetition along with physical
repetition which can be found consistently in famous works of art (Wagner).
The creation of a maquette along with smaller sculptures can be labor intensive
due to all of the planning involved. In order to create one you have to go through all of
the basic pre sculpture steps along with acquisition of materials. After this is the creation
of a skeleton following the beginning of the creation of a body.Following this is adding
texture and detail into the sculpture which allows for the implementation of the elements
which allows for each piece of work done this way to be unique and ready for the
industry.
