What is the difference between the Consolidation Estimate (CE), the Capacity Assessment (CA) and
the VMware branded Virtualization Assessment (VA)?
The VMware Capacity Planner product enables two different types of assessments (see matrix below):
Consolidation Estimates (CE) and Capacity Assessments (CA). These assessment types could then be
coupled with professional services to create assessment service solutions, offered by VMware and our
valued partners. VMware PSO has created a standardized service offering called Virtualization
Assessment, based off Capacity Planners Capacity Assessment tool.
Consolidation Estimates (CE) are optimized for Sales professionals to conduct pre-sales sizing estimates of
a customer's datacenter environment, CEs provide guidance on what can be achieved via virtualization and
consolidation assessments. Consolidation Estimates show the potential To-Be state of the datacenter. CE is
a simplified, guided workflow of Capacity Planner and a defined methodology/ process for Sales
professionals to conduct more sizing and lead generation activity.
Capacity Assessments (CA) are optimized for Consulting or Services professionals to conduct a deep-dive
analysis into a customer's datacenter environment. CAs provides a detailed roadmap on how customers
can achieve an optimized, virtualized datacenter. Capacity Assessments show the implementation blueprint
to actualizing the To-Be state of the datacenter. CAs leverages the full power and flexibility of Capacity
Planner and the industry expertise of Professional Services to conduct more virtualization assessments and
datacenter transformation.
Virtualization Assessments (VA) are VMware Professional Services-branded methodology, best practices
and delivery package; it leverages the richness and robustness of VMware Capacity Planners Capacity
Assessment features and tool. In effect, VAs are a VMware PSO-branded CA, i.e. using the power of
VMware Capacity Planner, VMware PSO has applied and packaged a service solution. VAs are a $20K
SKU sold by VMware partners and delivered by VMware PSO or our CP Accredited VCP partners. This
SKU is for 200 systems or less and provides a complete Virtualization Assessment with TCO/ ROI and
analysis. Please contact VMware Professional Services for more information.
When and why would I conduct a Consolidation Estimate (CE) or a Capacity Assessment (CA)?
Please see above question for more feature details and distinction between CE and CA.

The suite of VMware Capacity Planner solutions can provide an end-to-end virtualization implementation
lifecycle. Illustrated below is a typical use case for deployment of VMware Infrastructure leveraging VMware
Capacity Planner:
1. Sales explains the core vales and benefits of virtualization and system consolidation in both broad
terms and also from customer examples and case studies
2. However, the customer wants to know how virtualization applies to his/ her data center specifically
3. Employing TCO/ ROI calculators and other tools, Sales interviews the customer and then quickly
size the customers data center environment
4. However, in many situations, the customer wants a more scientific, disciplined sizing effort. In this
case, Sales can leverage VMware Capacity Planners Consolidation Estimate tool to provide a
virtualization recommendation plan, which shows a complete picture of the benefits and value of
consolidating to VMware Infrastructure.
5. At this point, the customer recognizes the cost savings and benefits recommended by the
Consolidation Estimate. As a result, the customer purchases licenses for VMware Infrastructure
and new hardware.
6. However, the customer wants to know the most optimal, least disruptive implementation and
deployment options for VMware Infrastructure. At this point, Professional Services can offer a
detailed implementation roadmap to the customer. Leveraging VMware Capacity Planners
Capacity Assessment tool, consultants can model various scenarios in order to derive the best,
most customized rollout plan.
The Consolidation Estimates (CE) should be leveraged as a demand generation tool for VMware
Infrastructure licenses, new hardware or implementation/ deployment Capacity Assessment (CA) services.
The goal of Consolidation Estimate is to allow Sales to quickly and accurately size a customers
environment, in order to get a complete picture of the data center. To achieve this goal, VMware has
enabled self-provisioning for Consolidation Estimates and also removed any licensing restrictions.
On the other hand, Capacity Assessment (CA) is a flexible, expert and customizable tool that your
organization can leverage as your own to create any type of capacity assessments to drive your business.
Based on your business case and how you define your best practices, you can create your own templates,
customize your reports or define your own scenarios for you whole organization. You can leverage the full
power and robustness of VMware Capacity Planner to conduct any type of assessments you want, i.e.
server, desktop, storage, power/cooling/ floor space, etc.

I have conducted a CE for pre-sales sizing. The customer is interested in virtualization and now
wants a complete Capacity Assessment (CA) of their data center. What should I do?
VMware highly recommends that only users who have completed one of the authorizing VMware Capacity
Planner Fundamental Accreditation courses conduct a CA assessment.
Since a CE is a limited preview of the potential of consolidation and virtualization, you or someone in your
organization will need to conduct a CA to get a full analysis of the data center environment. You have two
options to convert this assessment to a CA:
1. Start a new CA engagement by self-provisioning your Company ID. This allows you to start a
CA from scratch, i.e. data collection starts over at Day 0.
2. If you want to reuse your data collected from the CE assessment, you can upgrade the
assessment from a CE to CA.
a. Since your CE Company ID must have at least one VMware Capacity Planner trained
user, you must be trained or you must first add a VMware Capacity Planner trained
user as Guest to this assessment. Please review the documentation.
b. Once you have a VMware Capacity Planner trained user in this assessment, go to the
product https://optimize.vmware.com and you can self-upgrade to a CA assessment.
How do I upgrade from a CE to a CA (or, convert from a CA to CE)?
In the VMware Capacity Planner Dashboard:
CE to CA: Click on the assessment you want to upgrade to access the Assessment
Wizard, Step 1: Set Up > Edit Assessment Info > Company Info > Assessment Type
CA to CE: Click on the assessment you want to convert > In top-navigation bar,
Administration tab > Company Info > Assessment Type

Does VMware Capacity Planner automatically produce a report to hand to the customer?
This depends on your usage of the VMware Capacity Planner tool.
If you are conducting a Consolidation Estimate (CE), we have two different 1-click reports for you to
generate.
Progress Report: midterm report to show inventory and performance of all the systems.
Share this with your customer to show status thus far or to help debug/ diagnose potential
issues.
Final Report: generated as a presentation for your customer. Present this to your customer
to show the value of consolidation and virtualization.
If you are conducting a Capacity Assessment, you can also run the Progress and Final Reports. However,
these reports will be rudimentary and may not apply to your business. As a result, we recommend that you
create and customize your own reports, specific to your business. VMware Capacity Planner has numerous
reports that can be generated, but you must have fundamental knowledge about consolidation,
virtualization, operating systems, network troubleshooting, and other related topics in order to produce
reports that are meaningful to the customer. We encourage our partners and users to learn the tool and
create their own partner specific branded assessments which provide value to your market segment.

RESOURCES
Who should be my primary contact if I have additional questions?
Your VMware Partner Sales or Alliance Team is the best starting point.
Who should I contact if I need consulting help or advisement on my assessments?
VMware Professional Services provide a service to VMware VCP-certified Authorized Consultants partners
(formerly VAC program) named as Managed Service for Virtualization Assessments. Partners can buy this
service through a SKU (CON-ESX-MSVA) and can engage a centralized consulting team for all assessment
related activities such as pre-assessment work, remote data collector installation, troubleshooting, report
writing and report delivery. This service can help partners to dramatically enhance utilization of your field
consulting resources by enabling them to work on multiple engagements at once.

ORDERING
How do I order VMware Capacity Planner licenses?
There is no need to order VMware Capacity Planner licenses. Starting July 1st 2008, VMware Capacity
Planner licenses are complimentary to all VMware partners who have one employee on staff who has
attended the Capacity Planner Fundamentals Accreditation.
Can I buy VMware Capacity Planner for my customer?
VMware Capacity Planner may not be purchased by end-user customer organizations. It is only available
for authorized VMware partners. However, if an end-user wants access to VMware Capacity Planner, a
partner may provide Guest login access for the customer. VMware will not provide support to end user
customers. In effect, you as the partner organization will be responsible for this assessment, and have
granted Guest access to the end customer user.
How do I request a VMware Capacity Planner Company ID, so I can start my assessment?
With VMware Capacity Planner, you can create your own Company ID through the VMware Capacity
Planner Dashboard. Log in to your account on https://optimize.vmware.com and review the tutorial and
documentation for more information.

TRAINING
If I completed training, what will I be able to accomplish at the end of the class?
You should be able to successfully install VMware Capacity Planner Data Collector in numerous data
centers with varying degrees of complexity and run basic utilization and consolidation reports. Students with
previous assessment experience will be able to leverage Capacity Planner to deliver consulting
engagements faster and with higher quality.
I completed the Capacity Planner Fundamentals Accreditation, but do not have a username for the
https://optimize.vmware.com site?
