From the
I'm delighted to announce an extraordinary opportunity for students interested in law and civil rights.
In the fall of 2018, Clemson will host an argument in a federal
appeals case, as a Fourth Circuit judicial panel visits our campus
to hear a civil rights case. This will be an actual federal appellate
case, not a simulation. We don't know the exact details of the
case yet, but it will involve a lawsuit brought against a state agency or official alleging a violation of civil rights under the Constitution.

In preparation for this case, we will be offering in the Spring and

Fall a special 1-hour Honors seminar -- HON 2200, Section 1,
"Civil Rights Court Case," taught by my political science colleague,
Dr. Danny Frost. In the Spring, students will learn about civil
rights law and also about the legal and judicial processes. In the
Fall, they will take part in a mock hearing using the same case
that will subsequently be argued here in front of the Fourth Circuit panel. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to meet and learn from lawyers who have experience in
litigating civil rights and other federal cases.
Students are expected to sign up for both the Spring and Fall semesters of this class, and are strongly encouraged to take constitutional law or other law-related course. Space in this course is
limited, and requires permission of the instructor. If you are interested, or have any questions, please direct them to Dr. Frost
at dfrost@clemson.edu.
