The officers of the church went to Union Presbyterian Seminary

on Saturday, October 22, for their annual retreat. Once again, God
was faithful in moving and leading among us! One of the highlights
happened early in our time together.
Our Officer Manager, Meredith Bond, led the officers in a handson, creative devotional (you may or may not know, Meredith has her
own business, Grace Wins Explorative Arts, in which she uses her
creativity to foster learning, growth, and healing!). She had each officer take a time of silence during which they chose two Scriptures
that God had placed on their heart that morning. Once chosen, each
officer wrote that Scripture on a long strip of gold-glittered fabric.
The officers then came together in two groups, and Meredith
instructed them on how to weave their Scripture strips together (check out the photos!). Both groups formed
a cross weaving that sparkled of gold. It was truly remarkable to see how when the officers wove their effort together they created something so much bigger and brighter than what they had by themselves!
They were, of course, embodying a central truth about the church: God calls the church to be a people
whose hearts have Gods Word written on them and whose lives are woven deeply together across generations, ethnicity, income, or any other barriers that might divide. Indeed, when we are deeply woven and connected, we shine far more brightly with the love and goodness of Jesus!
Weaving and shining encapsulate two areas the officers seek to prioritize in the coming year. We hope
to see those God has already called to Grace Covenant find their lives more deeply woven together around
Scripture, prayer, and a deeper sense of community. And, we believe God is calling us to a season in which
we prioritize being a community of Jesuss light particularly through a focus on evangelism. Unfortunately,
that word sometimes evokes all kinds of negative unhelpful connotations. See page 15 for more details about
evangelism and a practical way we seek to equip the congregation for this work.
In Christ,
Bobby

$28,000 were down over 25%

from the total for August, which
benefited from having five Sundays and a late posting of Julys
last Sunday. For the first three
quarters of this year contributions are running about 4% over
the same period last year, due
mostly to payments on prior year
pledges.
Septembers operating expenses of $50,500 were slightly
lower than those of August and

items, although $5,500 went to

various mission efforts, mostly
local, including CARITAS. For
the first three quarters of this
year expenses are down about
4%, due to lower building and
personnel costs. For September,
expenses exceeded income by
$9,300.
Septembers Five Cents Per

Congratulations to Susan Farrell!

At a banquet on Thursday, October 20, Susan was awarded
the STEP Volunteer Service Award for her deep devotion to
supporting the children and families of Gilpin Court through the

Oyster Roast
a Success!

When parking in the back parking

lot at Grace Covenant Presbyterian
Church, please make sure you are
pulling fully into your spot and that
the alleyways remain completely unobstructed. This is extremely important so as to allow for clear traffic
flow but will also provide helpful to
some of our neighbors that have garage spaces which open up onto the
alley. Also, when driving through this
area, please make sure you are paying
close attention to all pedestrians and
cars around you. Thank you for all of
your help in this matter!

The annual Oyster Roast was an

enormously good time. We
played a few games, and enjoyed
the amazing weather out on the
Pamunkey River. Many thanks
to the Vanguard Class for hosting and providing this incredible
event for the men of the church,
and a big thank you to the Pearson family for again opening
their cabin door and inviting us
to hold the roast on their property. Thanks also to Kent Cardwell, and all those who planned,
carried, cleaned, and came to
make this year's roast a continued tradition of success. See you
next October!

Christian Education & Discipleship

Sunday School, Fall 2016

Held every Sunday from 9:45-10:30 a.m. The Nursery Crib Room
(Rm. 103) and Sunday School are available for children ages 2 and up.

Nursery Class (~0-2): Frolic is a new trial experience for us. In the past, our youngest Presbyterians have relied
on the loving care of our caregivers to show them the amazing love of Christ. And, week to week, they do a spectacular job. This fall we will be experimenting with a new curriculum to help lend some guidance and provide new material into what the caregivers are naturally doing. Were excited to bring this to our Nursery!

Pre-K (~2/3-6): Spark is Bible-centered programming at its best. Kids of all ages interact with the
Bible in every lesson. With hands-on activities such as interactive games and creative craftsSpark
makes learning exciting. Lessons in five age brackets allow us to meet the needs of a wide age range
with one curriculum.

Elementary: Holy Moly follows the arc of the biblical narrative. Kids of all ages interact with the Bible in
every lesson. Animated videos of the Bible stories dont use narration. Instead, visuals and sound effects give
kids the opportunity to retell the story in their own words. Holy Moly printed resources are available
making it equally engaging for younger and older kids. After class, Holy Moly kids walk away retelling the
stories theyve learned and take home completed activities to share with their family.

Student Mentoring Class (Room 301): This fall and winter, Pastor Christopher will be working
closely with our students on a teen-led project. Come up to the loft at 9:45 every Sunday morning to join in
and contribute. We need your student leadership in our church family, and our community! Let's see what
God has in store for us together.

Good Books, Third Floor (Room 303): All are invited to dive into these theological books with us.
Last spring we had a chance to learn from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Strength to Love, Luther's The Freedom of a
Christian, and Calvin's The Christian Life. This fall we will have a chance to check out N.T. Wright's Scripture and
the Authority of God from Sept. 18 to Nov. 6 and then will launch into the Book of Job from Nov. 13 to Dec.
18. Reading ahead enlivens the discussion, but all are welcome even if unable to check out the week's reading. If you'd like to get on our email list, simply contact Nelson Reveley nmr2uf@virginia.edu.

The Forum of Grace Class, Second Floor (Room 212): This class will be diving into a study
of the Miracles of Jesus Christ. Come and take part in this study about the most incredible parts of Jesus'
ministry, healing, casting out demons, feeding thousands, and bringing folks back from the dead! It's an incredible part of the Incredible Story.

The Vanguard Class, Basement (Room B4): This class meets in Room B4. Nate McKinnon is
currently leading this study on the Ten Commandments.

Ecclesiastes 4:6
Better is a handful with quiet than two handfuls with toil, and a chasing after wind.

November 23: A Time to Give Thanks

Traditionally our church hosts a "Thankgiving-esque"
meal the week before Thanksgiving. It's a time to celebrate
together and join in a special worship service that centers on
our thankfulness for all that God has blessed us with and
walked through with us in our lives this past year. A celebration for the whole family! See you there!

Grace Scholars, 2016-2017

We give thanks for the first cohort of Grace Scholars! As a reminder, Grace Scholars are students from
VCU, VUU, and/or UPSem. Each of
them receives a $3,500 stipend
through the Endowment Fund, and
as part of their commitment as Grace
Scholars they commit to participation
and leadership within one of our local mission efforts. As well, they
meet once a month as a cohort to
reflect on the churchs calling to pursue justice in the city. Finally, they
join regularly in Sunday worship.
This year, Martin Pinckney
(UPSem student) has committed to

leading and participating regularly in

both the Bus Rapid Transit ministry
as well as RISC. Tsion Habtamu and
Heather Brannon have committed to
leading and participating in STEP by
tutoring each week in Gilpin Court.
Tsion is also regularly involved in the
Good Books Sunday School class.
The cohort recently enjoyed their
first meeting alongside Reverends
Nelson Reveley and Bobby HulmeLippert. In preparation for the meeting, the participants read From
Eden to Jerusalem: The Church and
the City by Rev. O. Benjamin
Sparks III. They then met and at-

tended a lecture focused on pursuing

the common good of Richmond with
regard to affordable housing at St.
Pauls Episcopal Church on Friday,
October 14 (part of their Eyes on
Richmond series). Following the
lecture, the group gathered to reflect
on the reading and lecture. The next
cohort meeting is Friday, November
11. The group will meet again at St.
Pauls Episcopal Church for a lecture
and discussion. Please let Nelson or
Bobby know if you would like to join
in with our Grace Scholars for this
one of the lectures-and-discussions.

Parents Night Out Scheduled for November 12

Grace Covenant is proud to offer parents a little R&R with our special Parents Night Out, Saturday, November
12, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. A charge of $10 per child will help defray the costs of child care. There is a $15 maximum
per family fee. To RSVP, contact the church office at 359-2463 or by emailing info@grace-covenant.org. The
RSVP deadline is Wednesday, November 9, at 3:30 p.m.
Some things to remember:
- A lead teacher from CDC will serve as the
host each month
- Please do not forget to sign your
child/children in and out during PNO
- We ask that you please bring a diaper bag with ample supplies for the evening
- Please do not allow your children to bring food with them to PNO. This is due to
allergies and the safety of all children. We will provide a safe and appropriate
snack for them.

Psalm 86:11
Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere
your name.
