ThisdevicecanactasaDHCPServerthisfeatureisenabledbydefault.
UsingDHCPsimplifiesPCconfigurationandadministration.

DHCPClient
A"DHCPClient"willtrytoobtainitsIPAddressesandrelatedinformationfromaDHCPServerwhenit
(theclient)bootsorstarts.
Bydefault,nonServerversionsofWindowsbehaveasDHCPClients.InWindows,thissettingiscalled
"ObtainanIPAddressautomatically".

DMZ
TheDMZPCwillreceiveall"Unknown"connectionsanddata.
IfanInternetapplicationdoesnotwork,anditisnotlistedinSpecialApplications,tryusingtheDMZ
feature.
TheDMZPCiseffectivelyoutsidetheFirewall,sohaslessprotection.Becauseofthis,theDMZshould
beenabledonlywhenrequired.

DNS(DomainNameServer)
ADNS(DomainNameServer)convertsaURL(egwww.apple.com)toanIPAddress.
IfyourISPusesaDynamicIPAddress,bothyourIPaddressandtheDNSaddressareprovidedwhen
youconnect.
IfusingaFixed/StaticIPaddress,yourISPwillprovidetheIPaddressofaDNS.

DomainName(Internet)
The"DomainName"identifiesthesectionofthenetworkyouareon.
SomeISPsrequirethatyouuseaparticular"DomainName",whichtheywillspecify.
MostISPsdoNOTprovideaDomainName.Itthatcase,thenamewillbeignored,andmaybeblank.

DomainName(LAN)
The"DomainName"identifiesthesectionofthenetworkyourPCison.
Thisissimiliartothe"Workgroup"nameusedinWindows,orthe"Zone"nameusedinApple
computers,butthe"DomainName"isassociatedwiththeTCP/IPnetworkprotocol,notwithany
operatingsystem.

DynamicIPAddress
YourIPAddressisassignedautomatically(byyourISP)whenyouconnecttotheInternet.
IfyourISPdoesnottellyouwhatyourInternetIPAddressis,thentheyareusingthismethod.
ThealternativetothissystemistohaveaFixed/StaticIPAddress.

Firewall
A"Firewall"isadeviceorservicewhichprotectsyourLANagainstexternalattacks.
Firewallsworkbymonitoringtheincomingnetworktraffic.Invalidconnectionsandpacketsaredetected
anddeleted.
AFirewallisalowlevelnetworkservice.IncomingdataisNOTcheckedforviruses,norcanaFirewall
protectagainstmaliciousEmailattachments.

Hostname
The"Hostname"identifiesthecomputerwhenitconnectstoaServer.
SomeISP'smayrequirethatyouuseaspecified"Hostname"enteritinthefieldprovided.
IfyourISPdoesnotprovideaHostname(mostdon't),thisfieldcanbeignored.

MACAddress
Alsocalled"HardwareAddress",thisisthelowlevelidentifierforeachdeviceconnectedtoanetwork.
OnaPC,theMACAddressisfixedintheNetworkcard/interface.
SomeISPs(InternetServiceProviders)recordtheMACAddressforthePCtowhichtheDSL/Cable
modemisconnected.Inthiscase,youcancopytheHardwareAddressfromthePCtotheWireless
Router.

NAT
"NAT"(NetworkAddressTranslation)isthetechnologywhichallowssharingofone(1)InternetIP
AddressamongseveralcomputersononeLAN.
TheLANandthePCsonitarehiddenfromInternetusers.FromtheInternet,thereisnoLAN,onlya
singledevicetheWirelessRouter.

PCDatabase
The"PCDatabase"isalistofallknowndevices(LAN,WLAN).Thislistisusedwheneveryouneedto
selectaPC.
DHCPClientsareautomaticallyaddedtothedatabase,andautomaticallyupdated.
PCsanddevicesusingFixedIPAddressmustbemanuallyaddedto,anddeletedfrom,thedatabase.

PhysicalAddress
Alsocalled"MACAddress"or"HardwareAddress",thisisthelowlevelidentifierforeachnetwork
device.
OnaPC,theHardwareAddressisintheNetworkcard/interface.

Ifnotlisted,tryusingtheDMZfeature.

URLFilter
ThisfeatureallowsyoutoblockaccesstoWebsitesbydefining"filterstrings".Ifthe"filterstring"
appearsinarequestedURL,therequestisblocked.
EnablingthisalsoaffectstheInternet"AccessLog".Ifenabled,the"Destination"fieldinthelogwill
displaytheURL.Otherwise,itwilldisplaytheIPAddress.

WEP
"WEP"(WiredEquivalentPrivacy)isastandardsystemtoprotectdataontheWirelessLAN.
Dataisencryptedsothatitcannotberead.
IfWEPisenabled,allWirelessusersMUSTusethesameWEPsettings.

WPAPSK
WPAPSKisastandardsystemtoprotectdataontheWirelessLAN.ThisisanewsystemthanWEP,
andmoresecure.
Dataisencryptedsothatitcannotberead.
IfWPAPSKisused,allWirelessusersMUSTusethesamesettings,andhavethesameKey(PSK).

IfaPCisnotlistedinthe"PCDatabase",tryrestartingthePC.
AllDHCPClients(ontheLAN)areautomaticallyaddedandupdated,butDHCPfunctionsonlyonstart
up.
