Abstract:

Biomimicry is the study of natures models (designs and processes) as an inspiration to be

replicated to solve human problems. Architecture is one of the major biomimetic fields
demanding to learn from the nature to enhance and improve living environment. This
approach helps in discovering new techniques and concepts that can enhance the building
systems. In terms of design application, biomimicry often considered as a way of
understanding the process of creative thinking and creative problem solving, through the
mechanism of traducing principles of a living organism function and turning it into a solution
of a problem. According to Badarnah and Kadri BioGen methodology is an effective
biomimicry concept of daylighting design for tropical roofs. The concept follows a problembased approach and tries to create unique design through the integration of different
biological principles (compatible/incompatible), where complexity in the nature and sensible
design solution is the main challenge. In school buildings multipurpose hall is often the
single large interior space that relay majorly on artificial lighting while conducting functions

during school hours which mostly coincide with daylight hours. Maximum use of daylight in
building design is necessary to reduce the energy demand created by artificial lighting during
day hours. Studies show that electrical lighting energy use can be reduced by 25-50% with
advanced lighting sources, design strategies and controls; and by 75% with the addition of
daylighting. The aim of this research is to explore the opportunities of creating biomimicry
designs of a multipurpose hall roof to ensure maximum use of daylight to ensure energy
savings and visual comfort of occupants. Development of a BioGen roof from the foundation
of biomimicry philosophy and methodologies to apply biomimicry in daylit building design
will be recommended from this research.

Biomimicry operates on the principle that in its 3.8 billion year history, nature has already found
solutions to many problems we are trying to solve.
