Week 2 Group Exercise

You manage a hotel resort located on the South Beach on the Island of
Kauai in Hawaii. You are shifting the focus of your resort from a traditional
fun-in-the-sun destination to eco-tourism.
(Eco-tourism focuses on
environmental awareness and education.) How would you classify the
following projects in terms of compliance, strategic, and operational?
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
g.
h.
i.

Convert the pool heating system from electrical to solar power.

Build a 4-mile nature hiking trail.
Renovate the horse barn.
Launch a new promotional campaign with Hawaii Airlines.
O Convert 12 adjacent acres into a wildlife preserve.
O Update all the bathrooms in condos that are 10 years or older.
O Change hotel brochures to reflect eco-tourism image.
Test and revise disaster response plan.
Introduce wireless Internet service in caf and lounge areas.

1) Proposed classification of the projects:

Compliance: d., g., i.
Operational: a., c., j.
Strategic: b., e., f., h.
2) It was not too difficult to classify the projects, but we had to collect
(or to assume!) extra information needed to make judgment. In real
life, such information would have been available. Discussions occur around
whether converting the heating system to solar polar was an operational
necessity or an eco-friendly image need. Likewise, launching the
promotional campaign with Hawaii Airlines would be considered
strategic if it promoted the ecotourism theme, otherwise it could be
consider operational.
3. By classifying the projects, prioritizing them is more easily done:
Compliance projects are Must do projects, and the remaining
budget can be split between strategic and operational projects
based on specific selection criteria decided by the management.
