ASSIGNMENT-III-TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING-I

UNIT-5

1. C.C. pavement is constructed using the following data:

a) Modulus of elasticity=3x105kg/cm2
b) Poisons ratio=0.15
c) Thickness of CC pavement=19cm
d) Modulus of subgrade reaction=2.5kg/cm2
e) Wheel load=5.1tonne
f) Radius of loaded area=15cm
Calculate stresses at interior, Edge and corner by Westergaards method.
2. The properties of subgrade soil are given below:
a) Passing through 0.074 sieve=55%
b) Liquid limit=50%
c) Plastic limit=41%
Find G.I number and explain group index method of flexible pavement design procedure with
chart.
3. Determine the warping stresses at interior, edge and corner of a 30cm thick cement concrete
pavement with transverse joints at 4.5m interval and longitudinal joints at 3.6m intervals. The
modulus of subgrade reaction K is 6.9kg/cm3 and radius of loaded area is 15cm. Assume
temperature differential during day to be 0.60C per cm slab thickness (for warping stress at
interior and edge) and maximum temperature differential of 0.40C per cm slab thickness during
the night ( for warping stress at the corner). Assume e=10x10-6 per 0C, E=3x105 kg/cm2,
=0.15.
4. Design a flexible pavement with CBR method using the following data:
1. Subgarde soil (soaked) CBR=3%
2. Moorum sub-base (soaked ) CBR=20%
3. WBM base CBR=90%
4. Number of heavy vehicles per day in May 2003=500
5. Design Life=10 years
6. Annual rate of increase in the heavy vehicles=7.5%
The road proposed to be completed in May 2006. Use CBR method of
5. Design the flexible pavement using IRC-37-2001 method for construction of a new bypass
with the following data:
1. Two lane single lane carriageway:
2. Initial traffic in the year of completion of construction: 400CV/day (Sum of both directions)
3. Traffic growth rate per annum: 7.5%
4. Design life: 15 Years
