ISOLA LANDSCAPE TROPHY

Tribute to Prof. Mohammad Shaheer
INTRODUCTION
Public open space in India has had a rich and textured history. From courtyards that have
housed religious ceremonies for centuries to Jahangirs magical charbaghs, from village
mela grounds to the urban plazas of todays metropolises, from the ghats of Benaras to the
modern Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad, Indians have designed, built and used open
spaces for a variety of purposes for thousands of years.
Unfortunately in todays India, many factors, ranging from the sheer size of urban populations
to transport pressures and the usurpation of public spaces for private/non-recreational use,
have compromised, distorted and often destroyed the identity and our connections with
open spaces.

THE CHALLENGE
The ISOLA trophy seeks to establish a re-connection with the open spaces that belong to
all of us. An open space of significance to you in a city, town or village is to be studied. The
space may be a garden, street, plaza, heritage precinct, waterfront, marketplace, etc.
Describe the space briefly in terms of:

Issues
Structure

The space or the idea of the space is to be re-imagined for the future. You are encouraged
to be innovative and even radical in your responses. Landscape design, rooted as it is in
land, is necessarily impacted by climate, micro-climate and landform and your responses
should ideally take into account all of these factors. Do, however, let your imagination run
free; this is an opportunity to avoid being bound by the constraints that limit us in college
studios and in real life. Do remember that the study is a way of analyzing and understanding
the space and only a small part of the exercise. The main aim is to re-imagine the chosen
space; new ideas and new approaches are what we seek from you. And we want you to
enjoy yourselves while doing this!
