10 years anniversary
of inconso
Bertram Salzinger
CEO of inconso AG

inconso AG, with its headquarters in Bad Nauheim, Germany,

celebrates its 10 year anniversary and a company history of
steady growth. Since 2002, it has developed to one of the
largest German suppliers of logistics software and is one of
the leading companies internationally in this sector. Since
its founding, the revenue has quadrupled to Euro 42 million
in 2011. With ten German subsidiaries and a subsidiary in
France, the company has 450 employees.
The founding of inconso SAS, the subsidiary in
France, in 2012 was an important step in the strategic
internationalization. Along with this step, inconso also has
international partnerships for accessing the international
market. Partnerships have been entered into with
companies in Spain, Brazil, USA and most recently with
Poland. Numerous international projects have been won
and successful implemented.

expanded to include the two areas Embedded Systems and

Mobile Computing. The personnel growth in 2012 is at ca.
100 employees. The high order backlog suggests that the
revenue threshold of Euro 50 million will be exceeded at the
latest in 2013.
inconso supports mid-sized customers in the same way as
large, well-known companies in more than 20 countries on
all five continents. Local projects are handled just as reliably
as rollouts in several international locations.
An insight into current projects of inconso are available in
this edition of journal for the first time in a new design.
I hope you enjoy reading!

In the tenth year of its existence, inconso AG has

experienced a new growth spurt and starts its second
decade with full power: Along with the founding of two new
locations in Heidelberg and Gallin, the Hamburg company
pdv Technische Automation + Systeme GmbH with over
30 employees was taken over and successfully integrated
into inconso AG. With this acquisition, the service offer has

Zentis commissions inconso with a SAP

integrated Container Logistics System (CLS)
project
Zentis Logistik Service GmbH has commissioned inconso AG with
realizing a Container Logistics System (CLS) integrated in SAP. On the
one hand, the system should cover the total site and customer availability
of containers. On the other hand, the solution should make available
and deliver secure and transparent information about each containers
contents and batches on their way from the filling to the customers. The
storage of the filled containers takes place in a warehouse managed in
SAP LES. The predominantly paperless handling in the warehouse is
supported by functions with transponders / barcode labels.

dm-drogerie markt textile warehouse

After the logistics sites in Waghusel and Weilerswist, dm is now
also using inconsoWMS X for the new textile distribution center in
Karlsruhe. On 11,000 square meters, baby and children clothes
are stored, picked and shipped to 920 dm markets throughout
Germany.

The decision to transfer the IT control to inconso is based on

the long-term collaboration between the drugstore chain and
the software and consulting company. In the clothing distribution
center, dm-drogerie markt also relies on efficient processes,
transparency and flexibility. In comparison to the distribution
center Weilerswist, the functional scope of the software solution
used was accordingly expanded. With this software release at
dm, the character based radio frequency (RF) was replaced
with graphical RF. For the clothing warehouse, some additional
components were newly developed. With respect to this, an
example is the multi-order picking that was integrated in the
picking process. With this function, a worker can process up to
six orders for different stores in parallel on a picking cart.

SDSALZ manages logistics themselves

SDSALZ GmbH, Bad Reichenhall, plans to execute the multi-modal transports within the company and to the customers
themselves in the scope of a strategic new alignment of all Supply Chain processes. The insourcing strategy aims to
achieve the goal of making SDSALZ less dependent on external service providers and implement its own high level of
logistics expertise in further improvements in transparency, efficiency and quality. To support this step and to achieve exact
cost control and higher efficiency, SDSALZ implemented SAP LES as a logistics solution. The logistics software specialist
inconso AG was commissioned with the preparation and realization of the project including the required modifications
and connections to systems such as customs and the Deutsche Bahn. The logistics processes realized in SAP LES are
seamlessly integrated in the other processes and SAP modules.
With ca. 150,000 transports on rail, road
and via ship, SDSALZ ships more than
five million tons of food, industry and road
salts. Along with outbound transports, all
the inbound transports of trade goods,
line business and the production supply
and disposal should be processes in the
new solution.

Since 2011, inconso AG and

noFilis have jointly developed and
implemented the software and
hardware solution nPASS (noFilis
Protected Area Security Solution).
nPASS is a security solution based
on the most modern technology that
controls and manages the contactless
access by persons or vehicles to
restricted areas or protected rooms,
for example, pack zones for known
consignors.
The decisive advantage of such a
contactless security system is the
minimization of disruptions for the
logistics work flows. At the same
time, the possibility of manual
circumventions of the security
provisions is reduced. It is therefore
a question of the security and running
costs. In addition to custom solutions
for highly complex security conditions,
inconso and noFilis offer pre-configured
solutions that fulfill all the security
requirements of the federal aviation
offer (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt LBA).

As the first company to use nPASS,

Deutz in Cologne, Germany, was
won over for use in their distribution
center Cologne Kalk. In mid-2011,
Deutz had already been dealing with
the upcoming challenge. Together with
its long term partner and consulting
company inconso, the logistics and
warehouse professionals worked on
a possible solution for the distribution
center. Relatively quickly, the AutoID
technology was selected as a basic
component for such a solution. inconso
and noFilis have already taken on the
challenges in the area of AutoID and
RFID in several projects so that both
have supported the Deutz team to
address the challenges.
Airfreight shipments are one of the
essential elements for a competent
and quick service. As a result, Deutz
has worked on the secure delivery
chain and the certification as a known
consignor as a very early point in time.

TRANSPORT AND WAREHOUSE

LOGISTICS GROW TOGETHER
How integration of IT systems in transport and warehouse management result in
optimization potential
IInternational logistics networks are increasingly difficult to manage based on the increased delivery frequencies, increasing
number of partners and sales channels involved, higher transport costs and the consideration of environmental aspects while
meeting the required quick reaction times. An efficient logistics network requires that processes and procedures are monitored,
managed and optimized beyond the traditional borders between warehouse and transport logistics. This challenge must already
be addressed in an increasing manner with logistics IT systems today and in the future. Warehouse management systems and
transport management systems cannot do this when working separately.

//// Management of complex logistics networks

The
requirements
with
the logistics network have
become more complex and
comprehensive
through
globalization
and
the
outsourcing of logistics services.
At the same time, technological
advances have resulted in new
opportunities today. Relevant
data can be recorded, passed
on and provided to IT systems
for planning and controlling

transport units can be gathered in real time from different

channels and equipment such as mobile devices and
sensors and passed on. The biggest challenge is now to
manage this universal data flood, use the relevant data
sensibly to manage and optimize transports and warehouse
activities and to achieve transparency.
The timely availability of information about disruptions
and deviations is a prerequisite in order to manage the
effects of special situations and to be able to counteract
them in the scope of an IT supported event management.
Furthermore, an optimized data management offers the
possibility to plan ahead. Among other tasks, this is valid
for capacities, stock and resource planning as well as
personnel scheduling and transport planning.

collaborative processes together with neighboring systems

along the logistics chain. They must take over data from
neighboring systems and integrate these in their own
planning and optimization. And, these must be possible in
the various forms depending upon the requirements of the
supported processes.
A warehouse management system can plan the picking
processes in advance while considering the resources
required when the data from transport planning for load
plans, departure times and staging times is made available.
Current information about possible arrival time delays of
transport capacities can lead to replanning in the picking
process and avoid the wrong allocation of resources.
Capacities for receiving goods can be planned better if
reliable information about the expected arrival times is
made available from the transport systems.
Inversely, transport capacities can be better utilized when
timely, reliable information about the time, structure and
content of load units arriving into the shipment staging
areas are transmitted to transport planning systems and
can be considered there.
An individual logistics system is often integrated
simultaneously into different logistics networks having
diverging paradigms and must be used parallel to one
another.
//// Everything under one roof with Best-of-Breed
With inconso Logistics Suite, these can be taken into
account. With the comprehensive solution inconsoSCE
(Supply Chain Execution), large, complex networks can
be optimally managed. inconsoSCE achieves the required
transparent view on the actual stock at the locations and
in transit, the availability of stocks and the utilization of the
warehouses and transports all this with a detail depth that

ERP systems cannot offer. All the required data is under

one roof and achieves a significant efficiency improvement
while reducing costs.
The warehouse management software inconsoWMS
and the transport management system inconsoTMS do
not just manage the individual intralogistics processes or
transport related processes on each side. These solutions
convince more through the integration of each process to
be connected to. The individual customer benefits are the
focus. The components of the system can be reconfigured
and expanded at any time based on the customer
requirements.
//// inconso as experienced partner also for SAP EWM
and TM
SAP AG also delivers flexible software applications
that optimally combine the intralogistics and transport
management. SAP is also going down a similar path like
inconso AG with its own products with the planned new
releases. Still in 2012, the previously separated software
solutions SAP EWM and SAP TM will be functionally and
technologically connected more strongly than before under
the umbrella Supply Cain Execution Platform with the
Release 9.0. In combination with the SAP SCEM (Supply
Chain Event Management), SAP builds a highly effective
approach which can cover all the logistics process from
the supplier of the supplier to the final customer with the
SAP Supply Chain Execution Platform.
As a long-term specialist and close partner with SAP AG,
inconso offers the implementation of customer specific
solutions on the basis of the current SAP products. Special
practical SAP Add-Ons from inconso that extend the SAP
SCE solutions in critical areas place a decisive role in the
fit of the solutions to the customer specific requirements.

LINDE: HUNDRED THOUSAND

FREIGHT POSITIONS
inconso develops logistics solution on basis of SAP LE-TRA and SAP Add-Ons
The Engineering Division of Linde AG commissioned inconso AG with the development and implementation of
a comprehensive packing and transport management system. Its components should be covered through standard processes in SAP LE-TRA and through functions of the SAP Add-Ons developed by inconso for transport
management.

The goal of the project is to establish a complete,

integrated transport and shipping process within
the SAP system. Beginning with a multi-step
packing logic through transport planning and
execution to the invoicing of transport services,
the resulting transport costs should be split to the
different organization units using the transport.
With the replacement of the existing old system,
comprehensive, transparent processes without
media and information breaks are possible. In
addition, Linde Engineering achieves new synergy
effects through the system support transport
planning and execution, for example through
bundling of transports.
Michael Ketscher, project manager at Linde AG
explains: In light of the very complex logistics
processes in our global business, we searched for
a partner who could both understand the contexts
in depth and also has the know-how and tools to
capture these in a single system. In the offer
phase, inconso convinced us with the numerous
references and smartly designed concept.
The solution consists mainly of two components: A

/8/

central cockpit for the logistics processes for the

packing functionality and planning of package
shipments (transport processing) and a project
specific freight invoicing of transports with the
integration in material management, financial and
cost accounting. The users are involved early in
the project to achieve a high acceptance for the
new system and its operation.
//// Some technical details of the planned
solution
A transport control center enables the creation of
optimal transports through aggregation and
packing of the appropriate freight requests.
Via freight requests and units, the entities in the
SAP Add-On, complex, multi-level pack structures
of any depth and recursion can be represented.
The shipping process can be triggered by
suppliers, packers or other business partners as
well as by Linde itself and creates the starting
document for creating SAP LES transports. These
belong to a transport which consists of different
segments and creates the freight cost document
for the invoicing of transport costs.
The freight cost document with different cost
elements is split cause based to the individual
PSP elements in the SAP PS project system.
Subsequently, the costs incurred can be billed to
the service provider on a logistic invoice and are
reconciled as costs in SAP FI / CO. This allows
Linde Engineering to embed their previously
individual complex and high performance packing
and shipping processes in an integrated ERP
system that ensures the recording of the buyer
through to the logistics invoice reconciliation of
goods and value flows.

Linde Engineering is a successful global

technology leader in the design and construction
of process plants. In its order, the components for
the construction are delivered by a multitude of
business partners in an often multi-stage transport
without storage by Linde to the individual
construction sites. On specific nodes of the
transport, the goods can be repacked, newly
combined and then transported further. Therefore,
the guarantee of a comprehensive stock and
process security and a precise cost recording,
assignment and invoicing count as a mission
critical success factor in the logistics tasks.

Lindes Engineering Division is successful worldwide with the focus on promising

market segments such as olefin plants, natural gas plants, air separation plants,
and hydrogen and synthesis gas plants. In contrast to virtually all competitors, the
company can rely on its own extensive process engineering know-how for planning,
design and construction of turnkey industrial systems. Linde plants are used for
projects in a wide variety of fields: in the petrochemical and chemical industries, in
refineries and fertilizer plants, to extraction of air gases, to produce hydrogen and
synthetic gases, natural gas processing and for the pharmaceutical industry.

GRIESSON: THE NETWORK OF COOKIES

BLG Handelslogistik manages the complex logistics network for Griesson - de Beukelaer with inconso systems
Prinzen Rolle, Soft Cake, Caf Musica: Griesson - de Beukelaer (GdB) supplies the consumer with a broad pallet of popular sweet
and salty products from its five German production sites: Polch near Koblenz, Kempen am Niederrhein, Ravensburg in BadenWurttemberg, Wurzen in Lower Saxony and Kahla in Thuringia. This network is supplemented by the central warehouse in Koblenz
built in 2004. Along with a consequent customer orientation and several years of experience in the successful setup of efficient
structures and processes in retail logistics, the systems of inconso AG play a central role as instruments for the fulfillment of this
task.

While all transports are managed by Spedition Uhlhorn, the

logistics on the sites and the network management is the
responsibility of BLG Handelslogistik, which has been active
as a service provider for GdB since 2008. The intra-logistics
and external logistic processes that go from the end of the
production line through to the end customer are
extraordinarily diverse and complex. Examples of this are
the different storage conditions at the production locations:
Ravensburg and Wurzen maintain small logistics zones
with flow-through racks for the finished goods. In Kempen,
where everything that has the form of a sandwich cookie
begins, was still the oldest German high bay warehouse in
operation until recently. In Polch and in Kahla, modern high
bay warehouses are in use

and batch number. Behind this lean process, there is a

tremendous volume: GdB sold 156,000 tons of cookies in
2011. Here, there is a variety that the logistics systems have
to cope with.
The disposal at the finished goods warehouse is an
extremely critical process and requires smooth operations
explains Michael Wichmann, Director Operation of BLG
Handelslogistik: If, for example in Kempen, the case
happened where the warehouse could not take on any
more newly produced goods, the production would come to
a halt. We avoid this through a sophisticated systemsupported planning and control.

//// 156,000 tons of cookies

Even the distribution of production on several sites is a

challenge from the view of the logistics systems. Not only
do the individual production sites produce different goods,
they also relocate these goods many of the times between
the production sites for finishing the goods. GdB differentiates

Regardless at which site: All products are automatically

packed and palletized. The pallets are stretch-wrapped and
each receives its own ID number with Best By Date (BBD)

/ 10 /

//// Semi-finished, finished and mixed

between homogenous and heterogeneous products.

Homogenous products are produced at a single site.
Heterogeneous products are produced at one site as a
semi-finished good that is transport to another site for
finishing and packing.
//// Link up warehouses and transports
From the logistics perspective, the differentiation in
homogeneous and heterogeneous products allows a
different accentuation: As semi-finished goods, the products
are to be transported to one of the five other sites where the
goods are processed further to a finished product. The
finished product can then be either directly stored out to the
regional hub or brought directly to the retail customers. Or it
goes to Koblenz where additional picking and assembly
processes eventually take place before the sales-ready
production goes into the distribution. There, many products
receive their finishing touch. Under the term co-packing,
one summarizes the assembly of client-and action-specific

displays for point of sale. This preparation represents a

significant part of the value addition that BLG brings for
GdB. After all, there are about 2,500 different types of
displays registered.
As with the biscuits and wafer assortments during copacking, it is required that the BBD of the different batches
match: In the system, there are a half dozen set rules for
this. With the finishing, the BBD is married to the outbound
goods, the batch numbers are combined and the end
product is assigned a new batch number. Since all of the
previous batch numbers stay saved, a detailed tracking for
the most varied combination back to the raw material
supplier is guaranteed. The design of the displays depends
on the customer and action. Completely individual marketing
measures can be realized here as well as the stocking of
the sales displays of specific customers over a longer period
of time. For the invoicing with GdB and their further invoicing
to their customers, BLG has set up a matrix with which new
actions can be priced. This pricing scheme is based on the

inconso

/ 11 /

respective required workflows, which

are in turn optimized and determine at
which location the action is completed
respectively.
If displays are produces in the
production sites, the customer order
oriented repacking is done exclusively
in the central warehouse in Koblenz.
From the GdB production, three
different pallet heights are used: CCG 1
to CCG 3. The heights of pallets to be
delivered are set by the retail customer
and these wishes are met exactly by
BLG. The system calculates and
optimizes the actual called up target

pallets and the existing stocks on whole

and partial pallets based on the
parameters for each required process.
This happens regardless of whether the
customer wants a consistent height
such as the example CCG 1 plus three
boxes vertically or exactly wanting to
see the fulfillment of the exact
instructions for quick access mixed
pallets.
Along with the large areas for copacking and repacking processes, the
warehouse
operated
by
BLG
Handelslogistik in Koblenz has a Goods
Receiving zone in which the Walking-

Floor Shuttle from Polch is also set up.

Based on this technology, loading and
unloading can be carried out very
efficiently. Furthermore, the central
warehouse has a high bay warehouse
with eight aisles and 40,000 pallet
locations as well as a picking zone with
ABC classes in a mezzanine in which
mixed pallets are picked. 80 shipping
lanes equipped with vertical conveyors
for up to 17 pallets each are located in
the Goods Issue. All processes are
temperature controlled and are
documented across all statuses
securely.
Even though the direct delivery goes
out of the production locations, the
largest portion of transports to the
customers leaves from the Koblenz
warehouse. Therefore, one can say
that all movements are connected
centrally and loading is primarily done
centrally. However, the optimization is
done in the network.
//// Optimization instrument monitor

Source: Griesson - de Beukelaer

/ 12 /

inconso

The most important optimization

instrument is the central network
monitor. It offers BLG the global view
network-wide on the entire stocks,
transports, capacities, and normal and
special events.
This makes it possible to react to
external influences and immediately
compensate for shortages or surpluses.
For example, if a rack operating unit
fails in the fully automated high bay
warehouse and one of the aisle must be
temporarily blocked, it can be
immediately seen in one view where
and how the resulting shortfall for the
upcoming orders can be compensated
for and how it can optimally be resolved.
This is how delays and delivery
shortfalls can be avoided. Beyond the
daily optimization, all the irregularities
are immediately visible to BLG and can
be responded to right away.
This is also valid for the ongoing
changes in the network. For, along with
the six BLG operated sites, there are

Network and control system are so flexible that we can create

new warehouses off the cuff and if required even with a laptop and
that includes all the specific required processes onsite.
Michael Wichmann,
Director Operations BLG Handelslogistik
seven other warehouses throughout
Europe (one in Great Britain) to be
included for the sub-distribution that
mainly works with cross-docking
processes. Since changes can also be
required at any time in this extended
network, it is important to have a
structure that is flexible: Network and
control system are so flexible that we
can create new warehouses off the cuff
and if required even with a laptop,
emphasizes Michael Wichmann, and
that includes all the specific required
processes onsite.
In light of the complex network structure
and its management, the replacement
of the heterogeneous, old IT systems
with a uniform and comprehensive
system was necessary. This was part of
the requirements in the tender that BLG
participated in and used the inconso
system as a central management
instrument in the tender process.
//// A smooth transition
In the scope of a new tender for
business, a service provider who could
take over the professional management
of the complete operations on all
logistics sites including the planning
and control of the connected network
was searched for. Given the complex
network structure and its control, the
tender included the wish to replace the
existing
heterogeneous
storage
systems with a single WMS and SCM
system. For this, a uniform and
comprehensive system was designed
jointly by inconso and BLG as the
central management system of the
network.
BLG Handelslogistik presented a
convincing warehouse, distribution and
IT concept based on their experience in

planning and operating automated

warehouses and fulfilled all the
expectations of GdB. It also played a
role,
that
the
confectionery
manufacturers themselves has already
far reaching positive experiences with
inconso systems at multiple sites and
could therefore rely on the proposed IT
solution. The transports and their
dispatching were awarded separately
to the company Uhlhorn while the onsite
processing and the comprehensive
management remains the responsibility
of BLG Handelslogistik. For this, the
operational transition of the GdB
logistics department to the service
provider BLG took place gradually. In
2008, all the workers, all rights and
responsibilities
for
the
central
warehouse in Koblenz were taken over
first. In 2009, the other sites with ca.
100
employees
followed. Their
expertise, especially from the location
managers, was integrated into the
system in the transition process.
Through this implementation, some
structures and many processes were

inconso

changed to be more efficient. This

enabled the flexible use of experienced
teams for new tasks.
////
Network management with
inconsoSCE
After a two year project duration and
detailed, meticulously planned tests,
the sites were switched over starting in
July 2010 gradually and smoothly to the
new IT. The whole transition took place
under full utilization with GdB
significantly expanding its business so
that new requirements had to be
continuously considered. At the same
time, it was achieved on the first attempt
that six sites were certified according to
the International Food Standard.
The work together between Griesson de Beukelaer and BLG Handelslogistik
is sealed with long-term contracts: This
brings predictability for both sides and
offers room for further improvement in
the logistics network.
