Attendance:
Class attendance is mandatory. Attendance will be taken regularly in accordance with school
policy. Twenty points will be awarded for perfect attendance (10 points will be deducted from
the attendance bonus for each absence, 5 points deduction for each late arrival, early departure).
Attendance will also be considered in assigning grades for borderline cases.

Homework:
There will be a homework assignment after each lecture. Each homework assignment consists of
an online component and a written component. The online component is checked by
MasteringChemistry (the online homework system). The written component is collected and
graded by the instructor or teaching assistants.
Online assignments:
Online assignments are usually due on Wednesdays and Sundays at 11:59 pm. The exact due
date will be posted on MasteringChemisry when a homework is assigned. Each online
assignment is worth 4 points. Late online homework is accepted with a penalty of 10% per day
but not to exceed 30% of the total points.
Written assignments:
There is also a weekly written homework which is due on the following week at the start of the
first lab meeting. In the written homework, you are to show setups for a number of problems
selected from the online homework. Each written assignment is worth 4 points. Late written
homework is accepted only on the next lab meeting with 1 point penalty.
Laboratory Work:
Lab work is an important part of the course. You should read the experiment procedures
carefully, as a small oversight might cause you to repeat the entire experiment. Chem 185
experiments can be very challenging, therefore, it is imperative that you thoroughly understand
the pre-lab material and complete any written assignment before the lab. You will be expected to
carry out the experiment independently. Another challenge in Chem 185 lab is time. Efficient
time management is required of you in order to complete all experiments in a timely manner. If
you have extra time, you may perform additional experiments to maximize your total point in
lab. Please note that the maximum points you can earn in lab is 228 points including any
additional labs. You must attend the lab section you signed up for. You are only allowed to
switch lab sections with the permission of the instructors. Labs are graded on your performance
in the lab, the lab results, the quality of your observations, calculations, safety, completeness,
overall neatness, and timeliness.
Lab attendance is mandatory. Each absence, late arrival or early departure will result in a
penalty of from 1-5 points. You must earn a minimum of 70% on lab work in order to pass
the class with a C or better.
Quizzes:
There are two lecture quizzes each is worth 60 points. There is also a lab quiz which is worth 30
points. The quizzes will be given in the lab, see lab schedule for the exact quiz dates. Quizzes
are given at the start of the labs. Each quiz is 60 minutes in length and no extra time will be
given to students who are late for the quiz. Students are strongly discouraged to miss the
quizzes. Only under extreme circumstances, a quiz may be made up. The makeup quiz must be
taken within the same week of the quiz date.
Exams:
There will be four exams each is worth 125 points. You are strongly discouraged to miss any
exams. Only under extreme circumstances will a makeup exam be given and it will be on the last
week of the semester. You must earn a minimum of 250 exam points in order to pass the
class with a C or better.
Extra Credit
Extra credit points can be earned by a combination of:
1.) Perfect lecture attendance.
2.) Additional homework problems.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY.
1.

Academic Dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. In certain cases it may result in the student receiving an
F in the course. If student has already taken the course and is violating academic honesty code listed below, he/she may
be subject to a grade change to an F for the course.

2.

Taking pictures of your lab work or using another students work via an electronic device is considered cheating!

3.

If it is found that you have another students reports, notes, or material of any kind on an electronic device your
instructor will report the incident to the Dean of Math and Sciences and the Vice President of Instruction and you
will receive an F in the course and be subject to further disciplinary punishment by the college.

If it is found that you are taking pictures of your reports, notes, or material of any kind on an
electronic device your instructor will report the incident to the Dean of Math and Sciences and the Vice President of
Instruction and you will receive an F in the course and be subject to further disciplinary punishment by the
college.

Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to:

4.

Starting an experiment without completing your prelab assignment.

Giving assistance or information to another student during an exam.
Receiving assistance or information from another student during an exam.
Use of notes, books, or other aids during an exam.
Copying exams, lab notebooks, or other assignments from another student.
Providing exams, quizzes, lab notebooks, or other assignments TO other students at any time during the semester OR
at any time after the semester.
Falsifying laboratory data, procedures, or results.
Stealing exams, lab notebooks, notes or assignments from another student or the instructor
Using another persons work on exams, lab notebooks, or assignments.
Disrupting or sabotaging the work of another student.
Plagiarism: This is considered cheating.
Plagiarism is defined as to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (a created production)
without crediting the source: to commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing
source.
FROM: Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary 9th ed, (Springfield, Ma: Merriam 1981, p. 870).

Plagiarism is considered a violation of academic honesty. Lab reports that contain any part that has been plagiarized will receive
(at least) a failing report grade for the first incident. Subsequent instances of plagiarism may result in a failing grade for the class
and a referral to the Dean of Students.

Students most often have issues of plagiarism in their Introduction and Conclusions.

5.

Any student found perpetrating academic dishonesty on an exam or assignment (lab write-ups included also) will receive 0
points for that exam or assignment. Depending on the severity of the incident, the instructor may pursue additional measures,
including expulsion from the course and/or awarding an F for the students final grade in the course.

6.
