School: Penola Secondary College

Year Group: year 10

Date : 08/09/16

Focus Area
Introduction to the sail mast

Learning Intentions

In this lesson, we are learning about the use of

flimsy materials to produce strong structures

VCSSU129, VCSIS139, VCSIS140

Location / Setting

Organisation / Student Groups

The setting of the class will be kept the same. They

will be in rows.

The students will be given the instructions on a

sheet and will be required to finish their model by
the end of the class. They will be required to work
in groups of 3.

Special Considerations
To prevent class management issues, it is essential to
maintain the noise level to a minimum at any moment in
the class. This can be achieved by immediately telling off
any student who is disturbing the class.

Key Vocabulary
Sail mast
Solar sailing
Radiation
Sun
Light
Spacecraft
Longerons
Battens
Diagonals

Focus Questions

Is it easy to travel from Earth to space?

What would you consider before travelling to
space?
Can you bring a lot of materials and
equipment with you?
How would you reduce the weight of objects
you would bring with you?
Why is it essential to use light materials when
going to space?

Brief introduction to what is expected

from the students today (includes the
learning intentions and the success
criteria)
(2 min)

Ask the students some questions

concerning the limitations of travelling
to space:

Explain that scientists work on

building lighter but strong material
Ask the how this can be achieved?
(3 min)

What is this?
(1 min)

Explanation of the spacecraft using

sunlight
(2 min)

Video on solar propulsion and on its

implications
(5 min)

Introduce them to the SAILMAST

(1 min)

Mention the structures of the

SAILMAST
(1 min)

Explain the various steps

(10 min)

Video to show the use of photons from

sunlight to move spacecrafts
(5 min)

Explain that sunlight does not

produce a lot of force.
Ask the students on how they could
optimise the speed of travel
(3 min)

Pre-service Teacher Reflection

Did students achieve the Learning Intentions?

Success Criteria
What were the successful strategies?
How did you the teacher get them to the end result?

Mentor Teacher Feedback

Strengths / Areas for Improvement

How will we work to improve them?
Lesson Plan Template

The students will build their own model of

the SAILMAST.
(1 hour 10 min)
I will walk around to help the students
with their model.
