Guidelines for Small Group Communication - Kinesics Studies

Professor Franklin
Theatre/Speech
1. Your project group should consist of 2-3 people. Depending on your
thesis, you may elect to have 1 or 2 additional people. Please be sure to
have an observer and/or recorder at all times.
2. What is your thesis? Your thesis is the statement/position/point you are
attempting to prove as a result of your study. You must clear your topic
with me in advance.
3. The above two guidelines also apply if you are conducting a single-person
study, e.g. observing and/or impacting an existing group to which you
belong.
4. No speaking! As this is a Non-Verbal Communication study, your voice
should not play a part in the project. Even though one of the key elements
of NVC is ones voice, during this project you are not to speak or
otherwise verbally communicate with your subjects.
5. No touching! It is wise (and mandatory!) not to put yourself or your
project partners in any potentially harmful or compromising situations.
Touch is one of the elements that is most often misinterpreted, and the
one for which there is the least amount of tolerance. If your project
requires any degree of intentional touching, find another thesis!
6. It should go without saying (yet, I will communicate it anyway) that you
are not to partake in any activity or study that is illegal, immoral,
unethical, compromising, or offensive to either you or your subjects.
You are NOT to get yourself into trouble, nor are you to implicate me in
any such activity. Failure to heed this inflexible and absolute warning shall
result in a failing grade in this class.
7. These NVC projects are designed to be fun and educational. If you find
yourself, for whatever reason, uncomfortable with this assignment, please
let me know ASAP and we will work out a mutually beneficial solution.
8. Your final presentation to the class will be as scheduled, and will be 10-15
minutes in length. Additional information will be provided in class re
format and actual presentation requirements.
