Workshop Title: Working with Renaissance

Description:
This is an online professional development workshop for administrators, teachers, and school
personnel. The purpose of this workshop is to let administrators or teachers to work with
Renaissance.

Objectives:

By using Renaissance, participants will be able to successfully log in to Renaissance

By using Renaissance, participants will be able to navigate the site and view the reports
for students
reading scores or points they have accumulated

To improve students reading comprehension, participants will be able to make
adjustments to reading
levels based on the students reading scores

Activities:
Introduction: Ask participants if they would like to improve their students reading
comprehension skills and increase their reading level. What are some methods you have tried
in the past? (10 min.)
Tutorial: Have participants follow along with the steps to log in and view the different reports
available. (15 min.)
Conclude: Participants can ask any questions or make any comments. (5 min.)

Workshop Evaluation:
Participants will be assessed through participation in the discussion with the introduction and
successfully logging in and viewing a report.

Instructor/Participant Expectations:
The instructor will be online for the entire workshop. The instructor will provide positive
feedback along with suggestions for improvement.
The participant will signed-in and online the entire workshop. The participant will participate
and contribute to all of the discussions. The participant will complete all activities which
include completing the steps for logging onto Renaissance and viewing a report.
Both instructor and participant will communicate with professional netiquette at all times
while online.

Academic Honesty:

Academic honesty is expected throughout the workshop. Participants should submit work that
is original with all activities involved in the workshop. If participants submit work that is not
their own, they will receive no credit for attending the workshop.

Workshop Description:

How can teachers use Renaissance to improve students reading comprehension?

Objectives:
1) By using Renaissance, participants will be able to successfully log in to Renaissance

Activity Description:

Begin by asking participants if they would like to improve their students reading
comprehension. Then ask what methods have they used to improve their students
reading comprehension.

Next, have participants follow the steps to log on to Renaissance home page and then
follow the steps to view the reports for the student or the whole class.

Conclude with asking if there are any questions or comments.

Extended Workshop Activity:

Have participants pick one student and based on their reading comprehension scores, give
suggestions of what they would do to improve the students reading comprehension.
Teaching Tips:

Make sure that participants understand they need to look at all of the reading
comprehension scores

Remind participants that students reading comprehension scores are private and
should not be shared with other parents or school staff.

Assessment of Participant Learning and Workshop Effectiveness:

Participants will be assessed through their participation in the discussion- did they
participate in all discussion, were their posts reflective and on track.

Did the participants successfully log on to Renaissance?"

Did the participants successfully view the reading comprehension report?"

The following PowerPoint presentation was used to present my on-line class "Working with Renaissance."
Following are the slides I used for the presentation. I have included notes following certain slides which helped
me to present the information. I have included an introduction with the title, standards, objectives, and focus
questions. The next section contains the activities for the participants which include logging on to Renaissance
and successfully navigating the site to view the reports. The last section is the conclusion where the participants
can ask questions and complete the survey.

This is a screenshot of my desktop. The red square indicates the icon to click to start the program. On some
computer it is labeled iAR or Welcome to Renaissance.

This is the next page you will see. On this page you will click I am a Teacher/Administer.

We have finally arrived at the log-in page. Here you will type your username and password then click log-in. You
will then be prompted to change your password. Please, go ahead and change your password.

We have arrived at the homepage of Renaissance. On the top ribbon you will see your name, the help icon, the
headphones for a live chat, and the home icon.
The next set of icons are the ones you will use the most as teachers. The big orange box will take you to a drop
down menu which we will explore in a minute. The next four boxes will give you options to view a summary of
your class as a whole or individual students. You can explore these options later.
The bottom menu boxes are for the administrator to set up classes and students.
Now back to the orange Accelerated Reader button.

Now click the orange Accelerated Reader button. A drop down menu will appear with five options.
We will click on the words Record Books and Goals which will take us to the next page.

Take a look at the top and make sure our school name is showing and then click on the down arrow next to class
and click on your name.
Now click on the words Reading Practice Quizzes which is located at the top of the list.

You should now see a list of your students with the date of the last quiz taken and their score. You can click on a
name and it will list all of the quizzes they have taken with their score, the points earned and the date taken. You
have the option to delete any of the quizzes.
Now look at the top under the small ribbon that starts with Home and click on the words Record Books and
Goals. Make sure that you click on these words. This will take you back to this page.

Back on this page, you will now click on Reading Practice Goals which is the second item.

The first thing you need to do is at the top of the page click the down arrow and click on your name. Next, you
will need to click Select Marking Periods for the marking period and choose the current year by clicking
select on the right of the year and then click Save. On this page, you will be able to select the goal for the
percentage correct and the points goal. The program will then track the students and keep a record of how they
are doing.

Now at the top of the page click the Home to go back to the home page.

Now, we will click the orange Accelerated Reader button.

Now, we will click Preferences which is the fourth item in the list.

On the Preferences page, you have many options but we will go to the bottom of the page and click Quiz
Settings.

At the top make sure the school name is showing and then click the drop down arrow to click on your name. This
page will be beneficial if you have a students that has a different dominant language than English or if you want
a struggling student to have the questions and answer choices read to them.
At the top click the Home to go back to the home page.

Click the orange Accelerated Reader Button and then click on Reports.

This is the page that you will most likely use the most. Now click on the Reading Practice.

On this page, you will most likely use the Student Record tab or the Student Points tab. First, we will click
Student Points.

On this page you will start with clicking the down arrow to choose your class then you will click the buttons to
choose the dates and then click the button at the top View Report.
Then click Select a different Report which is at the top left hand.

Back on the Reading Practice Report page, we will now click the tab Student Record which is the third tab
down.

On this page, you will need to pick your class then pick the dates you want to see. The next section you want to
look at is the quiz type. You need to choose which quiz type you want by checking the box. Finally, you click
View Report at the top and this will show you your students and all the quizzes they have taken and their
scores.
