A paraphrase is...
your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new
form.
one legitimate way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source.
a more detailed restatement than a summary, which focuses concisely on a single main idea.
the mental process required for successful paraphrasing helps you to grasp the full meaning of the
original.
Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning.
2.
Set the original aside, and write your paraphrase on a note card.
3.
Jot down a few words below your paraphrase to remind you later how you envision using this
material. At the top of the note card, write a key word or phrase to indicate the subject of your
paraphrase.
4.
Check your rendition with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the
essential information in a new form.
5.
Use quotation marks to identify any unique term or phraseology you have borrowed exactly from the
source.
6.
Record the source (including the page) on your note card so that you can credit it easily if you decide
to incorporate the material into your paper.

A plagiarized version:
Students often use too many direct quotations when they take notes, resulting in too many of them in the final
research paper. In fact, probably only about 10% of the final copy should consist of directly quoted material.
So it is important to limit the amount of source material copied while taking notes.
Examples of Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing involves taking a set of facts or opinions and rewording them.
When paraphrasing, it is important to keep the original meaning and to present it
in a new form. Basically, you are simply writing something in your own words
that expresses the original idea.

Paraphrasing Blocks of Text
Paraphrasing can be done with individual sentences or entire paragraphs. There
are several examples of paraphrasing listed below for both long and short blocks
of text.
Paraphrasing Sentences
Here are some sentences that have been paraphrased:
Original: Giraffes like Acacia leaves and hay and they can consume 75
pounds of food a day.
Original: Any trip to Italy should include a visit to Tuscany to sample their
exquisite wines.

Avoiding Plagiarism
3 | Page
There is a fine line between plagiarism and paraphrasing. If the wording of the
paraphrase is too close to the wording of the original content, then it is
plagiarism. The main ideas need to come through, but the wording has to be
your own.
To use another persons writing in your own can be accomplished with quotes
and citations. A quote will need to be the exact wording and the author and
source will need to be identified.
Paraphrasing usually makes the passage shorter than the original. Another
option is to use a summary that is much shorter than the original and is an
overview of the main points
Example 1 of 5
A paraphrased example must be cited. You cite a paraphrased example as you would a word-for-word quote.
Paraphrasing is a condensed version of another author's work, or putting the author's words into your own
words.

Tips on Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing can be tricky. You need to make sure that you don't copy the
original author's style or wording. Even if you have a citation, such borrowing
would be considered plagiarism. Paraphrases should sound like you, using
vocabulary and sentence structures that your reader would recognize as your
work. To make sure you are not plagiarizing unintentionally, think about and jot
down the source's main points. Then, write your paraphrase without looking at
the original. When you have finished, compare your paraphrase with the
original:
Have you simply changed a few words to synonyms? Try again. Being
handy with a thesaurus is not enough to make the sentence yours.
Have you included exact sequences of words from the original? If so,
make sure to put quotation marks around those phrases, or re-write until
the entire paraphrase is your words.
Have you retained the meaning of the original? Changing the author's
meaning is not plagiarism, but academic honesty requires you to
represent other's work accurately in your writing.

Paraphrasing
S. Kathleen Kitao

When you write a paper, you use some information that you have read in books,
journals, on the Internet, etc. Your teacher might have told you, Use your own
words. In other words, even when you use someone elses information, you are
not allowed to use the words they wrote. You have to use your own. You have to
say the same thing in a different way. This is called paraphrasing.
6 | Page
For example, if the book you are reading from says, John Adams, who was
involved in winning independence for the United States, was the second
President. You cannot write those words in your paper. You cannot even write,
John Adams, a man involved in winning independence for the United States, was
its second President. One way that you could re-write it is to say, The second
American President, John Adams, was also influential in gaining freedom for the
country.
However, in spite of being told to use your own words, you might not know how
to do it. There are a variety of techniques you can use. You can change the words
for words of similar meaning; you can change the grammar; you can change the
grammar or grammatical forms. In this reading, you will learn about ways that
you can paraphrase.
Methods of Paraphrasing
Before you even begin to paraphrase, you need to make certain that you
understand what you are reading. If you do not understand what you read, you
cannot paraphrase it.
There are six ways that you can change sentences to paraphrase the
information. You will probably not use all of them in the same sentence, but you
can use ones that are appropriate. (In each of the examples, only one change is
made. This is not enough if you are actually paraphrasing.) Read about each type
of change, and look at the examples. Then make that type of change in the
sample sentences that follow.

c) If there were sufficient jobs, some of the young people in postcompulsory education and training would rather be in work.
Possible paraphrase:
However, the fact that there are fewer jobs for young people is not the
only reason why more of them are entering post-compulsory education.
It is often said that present-day high-tech economies need more skilled and
less unskilled labour than before, and that Britains and Europes
competitiveness depend on educating and training their young people to
rising world standards. This pull from the economy has certainly been one of
the forces behind the expansion of education, but it has been exceeded by
the push from underneath. The pace at which more young people have been
gaining qualifications at all levels, from GCSEs to degrees, has outpaced the
growth in the number of jobs for which these qualifications were formerly
required. Hence the devaluation of qualifications in terms of their labour
market returns. This has affected young people at all levels in the qualification
hierarchy, from 16-year-old job seekers to university graduates..

Account for the recent increase in the numbers of young people in post
compulsory education.
Paraphrase a) has been written to suit this title because it focuses on the reasons
why there is an increase therefore answering the instruction to account for it.
a)Roberts (1997) argues that although the demand for a skilled workforce has
contributed to the increasing number of young people in post-compulsory
education, a second factor is more significant. In a limited job market, as the
number of people with qualifications increases, employers can fill vacancies with
more highly qualified applicants than they could before. This, in turn, puts
pressure on young people to seek further qualifications and they therefore
remain in education.

b) Although the governments policy has resulted in more young people in postcompulsory education, this has not necessarily been to the advantage of the
young people themselves. As Roberts (1997) points out, when the number of
qualified applicants exceeds the number of jobs available, the qualifications
themselves become worth less in terms of the kind of job they enable people to
get. A job previously requiring A-levels, for example, might now be taken by
someone with a degree.
