Deans Corner: Developing a Culture with High

Expectations
We have all launched into the world of small group. This is a time
where procedures and routines are critical to ensure a productive
learning environment is maintained. Here are a few best practices to
focus on in October to make Small Groups a time with tight routines
that support high academic expectations.
Groups Pre-Established Using AIMS Webs, teacher assessments, and
NWEA data to create groups. Check that students know their group
and rotations.
Transitions: Using music or a timer to keep transitions to a minute or
less . We can lose valuable instruction time to transitions so keep
practicing until it is fine tuned.
Organization: Plan out activities to scaffold over the week. Are the
activities for a center completed in isolation or does the activity/skill
build over the week? Have items labeled and prepared for each
center with clear directions and works samples if needed to support
students completing quality work.
Clear Expectations for Work Time: Every minute counts! Ensure that
students understand the CHAMPS, independent work, and rotations.
Inspect what you expect!
Rigorous Centers: Our goal is to have independent work that is
aligned to current reading goals and cyclical as well. We want to focus
on products and including engaging meaningful practice vs. busy
work. Always ask what is the purpose of this activity?

Call

Ins: Check call in procedures in staff manual page 6.

Remember to create an ASEOP absence each time you are out.

Monthly Focus
Wing Goal:

Hall

Passes ensure students know how to use these properly

with the restroom procedure.
Wing

Meeting: Bring your resources from regionals for

planning
Dress

Code: Please make sure you are doing a dress code

check every morning with your scholars. I see lots of off color
Hoodies and
shirts! Remember also you can decide the consequences for
this. Students do not need to be sent to me unless it is a level 5
incident.

Shout Outs:

Using a purposeful morning

meeting to ensure unified
routines and procedures to
maximize instructional time
while building a positive
school culture.
Team Action Step:
Pre-Plan the content of your
daily morning meetings.
Having an organized plan will
assist with the flow and
ensure that you accomplish
great things during this time!

Although it has been a scheduling challenge, I have REALLY

enjoyed the time I have been able to spend in your classrooms the
last few weeks during my full observations. I see so many great
things Here are a couple I wanted to highlight!
Mr. Remmers is bringing the concepts he is teaching ALIVE in his
classroom. Students in King Craigs classroom are experiencing
how our country was formed.
Mrs. Boheme is doing a fantastic job with kicking off reading and
math workshop. Her students are fully engaged during workshop
and transitions are efficient and timely.
I urge you this week to think about how you are engaging your
students in the curriculum by using real-life or relatable topics to get
them excited or to help them better understand the topic. If you are
not sure how, ask your teammates!

Mindset Matters
It's easy for teachers to start believing they're not living up to the expectations of the job, especially with all the demands
being placed on them today. Understand thisNo one's perfect, we all make mistakes. Were all FHBs, or Fallible Human
Beings, who at times think, feel, say and do things that make our lives worse instead of better. Welcome to the human race.
WELCOME UNCONDITIONAL OTHER ACCEPTANCE (UOA)
UOA makes it easier to live with and get along with others, including your students. It makes you the kind of person they'd
prefer to be around when they are struggling with something. It also makes it easier for you to be there for them, and hang in
there for them when others may give up on them. That might come in handy at some point. It could even save a student's
life.. You can read more about UOA and USA in two places:
