COMMUNICATION STUDIES

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
EXPOSITORY

For this component of your I/A, you will be required to present a 5-10 minute expository speech
in which you discuss your topic and your research thus far.
You will be marked on:
1) A discussion of issues and challenges that are related to your topic (5 marks)
2) An evaluation of TWO sources of information you collected concerning your topic. (4
marks)
3) Organization of the speech. (3 marks)
4) Delivery of the speech: tone of voice, pitch, rate, body language (4 marks)
You can take the liberty to organize your speech in a way that you think will be effective. But
generally, following this format will help you to have an organized speech:

Introduce your task (Today I am pleased to discuss my topic of research for my
Communication Studies Internal Assessment and the progress of my research thus far.)
State your topic.
Briefly state your purpose of research and why you chose this topic. (BRIEFLY)
Identify and briefly explain some issues that are linked to your topic. (issues are the
concerns related to your topic. They should come up when you are doing your research.
For example, if your topic is Global Warming, related issues are pollution and
environmental conservation. If your topic is Drug Abuse among teenagers, related issues
are juvenile delinquency and the state of the family in todays society. State the issue and
explain how it relates to your topic)
Identify your source of information. State all the specifics (where you got it, date etc.)
Briefly describe the kind of information you were able to derive from it. EVALUATE it,
say whether or not it is reliable and/or valid and why.
Repeat the step above with your second source of information
Identify challenges you experienced in conducting your research thus far.
Say that you look forward to continuing your research into your topic
Say thank you and Sita Ram/Good morning.

Tips/Things to remember:

Use linkwords
Speak in a neutral tone
Maintain eye contact
Do not read, speak
Your cue card should just have headings, the names of your sources or any quotes/
statistics you may be citing.
Relax, no one is going to kill you and no one ever died from public speaking.
