Background

The Indian National Congress at its XVII Session of December 1901 passed a resolution stating that
in view of the fact that the tendency of recent legislation namely, The Indian Mines Act VII of 1901,
is that all Indian mines must be kept under the supervision of mining experts, the Congress is of
opinion that a Government College of Mining Engineering be established in some suitable place in
India on the models of the Royal School of Mines in England, Mining Colleges of Japan and at other
places in the continent. The McPherson Committee formed by Govt. of India, recommended the
establishment of an institution for imparting education in the fields of Mining and Geology, whose
report, submitted in 1920, formed the main basis for establishment of the Indian School of Mines,

Viceroy of India to address the need for trained manpower related to mining activities in the country
with disciplines of Mining and Applied Geology. In 1967 it was granted the status of a deemed to be
university under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. Since its establishment, ISM has undergone
considerable expansion of its activities, and presently it can be considered as a total technology
education institute.
Diversification and Growth

and Applied Geophysics were established in 1957. The departments of Mechanical Engineering and
Mining Machinery Engineering, Fuel and Mineral Engineering, Management Studies, and Electronics
and Instrumentation Engineering were added in 1975-1977. The Centre of Mining Environment, the
Computer Centre, the Centre of Longwall Mine Mechanisation, and the departments of Applied
Chemistry, Applied Physics, and Applied Mathematics were established between 1975 and 1977. The
department of Computer Science and Engineering was added in 1997. The expansion of the institute
into a total technology institute was further accelerated with the establishment of the Department of
Electrical Engineering in the year 2005, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering in
2006, and the Department of Chemical Engineering in 2010.

spread over an area of 393 acres, (with 218 acres of existing campus and 175 acres under acquisition

Evaluation System
Students are evaluated on a continuous basis throughout the semester. Evaluation is done by the
faculty. The institute follows the Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) system. The OGPA is on a
scale of 0 to 10. Each course carries a certain number of credits and the grades are awarded to the

The OGPA is computed as the cumulative credit-weighted average of the GPA of the individual

Programs Offered
ISM offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs leading to the award of B.Tech, Dual Degree,
Integrated M.Sc., Integrated M.Sc.Tech, M.Tech, M. Phil, M.Sc, M.Sc.Tech, Ph.D and MBA degrees.
Details of each of the programs and their admission processes are given below.
B. Tech, Dual Degree and Integrated Courses
These programs are offered by various departments to the students who clear the Joint
Entrance Examination (JEE), conducted by the IITs in April every year. World renowned for its
ultra-competitive nature, the JEE attracts upto 300,000 candidates of which less than 5% secure an
admission to the IITs & ISM.

B. Tech is a four year (eight semester) program, designed to impart the fundamentals of
professional engineering. As per the academic curriculum, B.Tech students undertake a research
project in the fourth year.

Dual Degree is an integrated B.Tech plus M.Tech five year (ten semester) program, designed
to give more emphasis to project work. The program is inline with B.Tech for three years. For the
next two years, the students take up courses in their area of M.Tech specialization. In the fifth year,
students do an exclusive M.Tech project.

Integrated M.Sc / M.Sc.Tech is a five year (ten semester) program, admission into these
programs is given to the candidates who cleared IIT-JEE.

M.Tech

This program is offered to students who clear the highly competitive Graduate Aptitude Test
in Engineering (GATE), conducted by the IITs and IISc followed by an interview.

The two year (four semester) program involves core courses in the area of specialization
apart from electives and a final year project. The student is also required to give one or more
seminars and undergo industrial/practical training during the program.
M.Sc. / M.Sc.Tech

This program is offered to students who clear the ISM's Entrance Test.

M.Sc.Tech is a three year (six semester) & M.Sc is a two year (four semester) program
program.These programs are designed to impart essential knowledge in the respective departments
and allow for specialization in major areas.
Ph.D

These programs are offered in various disciplines to scholars exhibiting a high calibre in
research. Basic and applied research are undertaken on par with international standards.

The research program can be interspersed with theory courses to aid in the project.
Tentatively, the Ph.D programs are completed in four years.
MBA

This program is offered to students who clear the highly competitive CAT-IIM Score,Group
Discussion And Interview.

The two year (eight quarter) program offered by the Department of Management Studies is
designed to produce competent managers.

The program places emphasis on business and industrial knowledge as well as soft skills
