Passage-V
Pisa offers a quiet holiday. Apart from the Leaning Tower sequence where the tourists flock, the
city is free of the king of crowds one sees at Florence. An eleven km bus ride brings us to Marina
de Pisa, the coastal extension of the city, where the Ligurian Sea and quaint buildings provide a
few hours of relaxed walks. However, there isnt much of a beach.
Gone is the tension of the previous night, when, flying into Italy in the late hours, my wife and I
were a little apprehensive. Compared to Germany where we had spent three weeks, in Italy, night
bus from the airport terminated at the railway station, instead of going all the way to our hotel.
Ten Euros, said the cab driver at the station when asked how much the ride to the hotel would
cost. Quite sure he was overcharging, we got in nevertheless. At 10.30 pm., we anyway had little
choice. The streets were dimly lit and the driver was uncommunicative. Stopping at a desolate
building after we had clearly gone out of the city limits, he announced: Your hotel. I gave him
a 10-Euro bill and turned away. But the cabman stopped me. Your change, sir, he said, pointing
to the meter which read 8.20 Euros.
The small change I got back that day was like receiving the certificate of a nations honesty. Italy,

The principal Rajput states took advantage of the growing weakness of Mughal power to virtually
free themselves from central control while at the same time increasing their influence in the rest
of the Empire. In the reigns of Farrukh Siyar and Muhammad Shah, the rulers of Amber and
Marwar were appointed governors of important Mughal provinces such as Agra, Gujrat and Malwa.
The Rajputana states continued to be as divided as before the bigger amount them expanded as
the cost of their weaker neighbours, Rajput and non-Rajput. Most of the larger Rajput states were
constantly involved in petty quarrels and civil wars. The internal politics of these states were often
characterised by the same type of curruption intrigue, and treachery as prevailed at the Mughal
Court. Thus, Ajit Singh of Marwar was killed by his own son.
The most outstanding Rajput ruler of the 18th century was Raja Sawai Jai Singh of Amber (16811743). He was a distingui-shed statesman, law maker, and reformer. But most of all he shone
as a man of science in an age when Indians were obvious of scientific progress. He founded the
