DHAL, Shield

Painted rhinoceros leather, lacquer, iron
diam.: 49 cm
This Dhal, of a slightly domed circular shape is made of rhinoceros leather, which was dried, not tanned, and
lacquered.
Both sides display relief paintings, in a Japanese inspired theme.
In the exterior side and at the centre, surrounding the four iron protrusions of the star shaped eyelets which hold the
straps, an inscription is visible, which reads Khuda Bux shieldmaker shapura 1885 Khuda Bux maker of the shield

On the inside and circling the rim, it displays a cloud theme in red and gold tones over the black background of the
shield.
