2 / 2016 The TASTE of GSBA: Equalux

Welcome to the 2016

Twenty-six years ago, two teachers did not know the impact they would have over
the course of the next two decades. Creating the first LGBTQ scholarship fund in the
country has given more than 500 LGBTQ and allied students an opportunity not only
to graduate from college, but to be embraced by a community committed to their
success as the next generation of leaders. Over the course of the past 26 years, GSBA
has awarded more than $2.7 million in scholarships to over 500 LGBTQ and allied
leaders helping to change the dialogue around equal rights. Through your dedication
and generosity, we will continue this mission.
This is a milestone year for the Scholarship Fund as we announce The GSBA Guarantee,
the organization's newest initiative committing to funding our students through the four
full years of their undergraduate career. We want to ensure not only that our Scholars
are able to enroll in college, but that they feel financially secure enough to continue
their education year-after-year. All too often, financial pressures force students to drop
out before completing their degrees and it can be incredibly difficult to re-enroll.
Additionally, by combining the resources of both the chamber and the Scholarship Fund,
GBSA is doubling down on its investments in our students leadership development
outside of the classroom. Shepherding scholars through their undergraduate education,
by providing financial and persistence support puts GSBA at the forefront of the college
success movement. This commitment allows our students to build up their leadership
within their communities as they work through their degrees.
This gala is an incredible event full of great food, amazing wines, and phenomenal
entertainment. We cannot forget amidst all the festivities that our goal is to raise
money for the GSBA Scholarship Fund. Last year your generosity allowed us to award
over $410,000 to 55 students. Tonight we plan on breaking all past records! The
money raised tonight will ensure that we have the ability to create a new cohort of
leaders in the LGBTQ community - these are the students that will guarantee that for
the next generation, equality will no longer be a cause, but the norm.
This event would not be possible without the stalwart leadership of our members
and sponsors, particularly our Title Sponsor 1st Security Bank different and our
Presenting Sponsor Comcast. We would also like to thank all of our members who
have sponsored TASTE including our incredible caterers, restaurants, and wineries
bringing you their finest delicacies.
We would be remiss if we also did not thank the GSBA staff and volunteers. Without
their commitment, countless hours of work, and sleepless nightswe would not be
here tonight.
GSBA is its members, without this supportive business community there would not
be a Scholarship Fund or the TASTE. As you read through the program tonight and
watch the evenings events, take note of
the businesses that are GSBA members
and remember to support them with your
business needs.
Thank you for helping to forever change
the life of a GSBA Scholar!

ABOUT THE GSBA SCHOLARSHIP FUND

CELEBRATING 26 YEARS
Seeing too many LGBTQ youth without support motivated two teachers in 1990 to
launch the first LGBTQ scholarship fund in the country. Those early visionaries were
members of GSBA, one of the first chambers created specifically to support LGBTQowned businesses. In that initial year GSBA awarded $5,000 to two scholars.
The Fund continues to grow with unprecedented support, and this year GSBA surpassed
$2.7 million in cumulative scholarships as we awarded $410,000 to 55 students. To date we
have awarded scholarships to a diverse group of over 500 scholars. Each of them possesses
the skills, talents, and dedication to make their dreams of bettering their communities and
the world a reality. None of this would have been possible without the foresight, vision and
passion of countless volunteers, donors and supporters over the years.
This year, GSBA is proud to announce The GSBA Guarantee, the organization's
newest initiative to provide funding to students during four years of undergraduate
work. Financial barriers, often due to family estrangement, are one of the major
reasons LGBTQ students do not graduate from college. By significantly decreasing,
and in most cases eliminating, this barrier, GSBA has opened doors for students to
focus on feeling connected to a community, one of the biggest factors in a student's
ability to persist through graduation.
Each February, over 100 volunteers gather to interview students who will be our future
leaders. Volunteers come back year after year for this life-changing opportunity. Please
contact the office if you are interested in joining the process this year.
Applications are available online at thegsbascholarship.org and are due by January 13,
2017. Scholarships will be awarded at the annual Scholars Dinner held on May 19, 2017.
You wont want to miss this inspiring event!

THE LOVE MARKETS

LED BY singer-songwriter Angie Louise

About our Emcee, Amanda Westbrooke

Master of Ceremonies Amanda Westbrooke has long
been inspired by the gifts of storytelling. Her Virginia
childhood, filled with lessons, colloquialisms, and
the tender stories of tradition exalted by her three
Southern aunts Ramona, Faye, and Winkie, have
landed her smack dab in the middle of telling stories
for purpose and progress throughout her entire life.
For the past decade, Ms. Westbrooke has served as
host of Tacoma's City Line Television's weekly economic
and cultural affairs program. As a natural educator,
here, Ms. Westbrooke wafts and weaves local tradition
with urban progress. With vast experience at Microsoft
in human resources, as a former teacher and curriculum
development specialist for First Presbyterian School,
as Director of Education & Outreach for Tacoma's Little
Theatre, and as Strategic Project Manager for Metro Parks, Ms. Westbrooke's virtues were
not lost on those who have either worked with her or were led by her.
As a mother to grown daughter Olivia, Ms. Westbrooke would be the first to admit, the
lessons of life have only just begun to tell their story. Her love of gardening, food, films,
fashion, opera, and classical music reflects Ms. Westbrooke's style, grace, and elegance
that comes natural to her role as your host today.
To inquire about Ms. Westbrookes services kindly email amandawestbrook913@gmail.com.

About Our Auctioneer, Laura Michalek
Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still
relies on the endurance and discipline she
possessed when at the age of 15, she was the
first female winner of the Chicago Marathon.
While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day
of running since then, its this intention to
excel at what she loves that is most evident.
To me Auctioneering is about giving a lot of
yourself, before and during the event, in a way
that most folks wouldnt expect. Her style,
fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their mission, not only sets her
apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michaleks wildest dreams. Ive always been
deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it
is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.
As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on
Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. When I start Auctioneering,
its like being in the starting block all over again, and I still set out to win, however this
time its for the organization Im representing.
To hear what folks are saying about Ms. Michalek, visit lauramichalek.com, email

MEET OUR CELEBRITY CHEFS

In 2009, the Seattle PI named Chef TAMARA
MURPHY one of five entertainment and culture
icons to watch, and cited that she has been a
Seattle cooking star for nearly two decades, but
now she's moving beyond traditional restaurants
into wild and vibrant collaborations. This much
honored and always inventive James Beard
award winner and one of Food & Wines picks
for Ten Best New Chefs in America is doing
just that as a restaurant owner and as author of
TENDER: farmers, cooks, eaters.
Trained in New York and relocated to the
Northwest, Tamara partnered in 1999 to open
Brasa, one of the first area restaurants to focus on sourcing local, seasonal
products in support of regional farmers. In 2012 she opened Terra Plata on
Capitol Hill to widespread acclaim.
A force in the national culinary community, Tamara has traveled the country
to share the important message of local sustainable food. Regionally, she
has created events such as An Incredible Feast Where the Farmers are
the Stars (pairing farmers and chefs to raise awareness and funds for local
family farms), The Good Farmer Fund (to help local farmers gain direct
access to emergency funding during crop or farm loss), and Burning Beast
(where chefs come together to raise awareness for local farmers).
JERRY TRAUNFELD is chef and owner of Poppy
and Lion Head, a pair of innovative restaurants
in Seattles vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood.
Poppy's menu borrows the idea of the thali to
present Jerry's own style of Northwest cooking,
highlighting seasonal ingredients, fresh herbs,
and spices. It was named one of 50 best new
restaurants in Travel & Leisure and made the
Cond Nast hot list of 50 top new restaurants
in the world. Lion Head opened this past
summer to critical acclaim for its unique take
on Sichuanese cuisine.
Jerry graduated from the California Culinary
Academy in 1983 and started his professional
career at two important San Francisco restaurants, Ernies and Stars.
After moving to Seattle, Jerry became executive chef of The Alexis Hotel,
overseeing 4 restaurants including the Caf Alexis.

Jerry became executive chef of The Herbfarm in 1990. Over the

next 17 years Jerry helped turn it into a top-rated destination
restaurant, garnering national attention for his seasonal Northwest
menus, innovative use of culinary herbs, and early dedication to local
sustainable ingredients. In 2000, he won the James Beard award for
Best Chef Northwest.
Jerry is the author of The Herbfarm Cookbook, which won an IACP award,
and The Herbal Kitchen, which has been featured in The New York Times
Magazine, Food and Wine, Bon Apptit, Gourmet, Fortune, and more.
LESLIE MACKIE picked up her kitchen skills
at the California Culinary Academy in San
Francisco, but baking was her true love.
She was soon creating pastry for acclaimed
chefs Lydia Shire and Susan Regis at Biba
in Boston. While working as a restaurant
consultant in Los Angeles, she found herself
more and more interested in bread, drawn
by the combination of science and intuition
required when baking. She was among the
first wave of Americans experimenting with
recipes from European master bakers and
a long, slow fermentation process. Mackie
rediscovered the craft's traditional, almost
spiritual importance.
Leslie was head baker at Seattle's Grand Central Bakery, then in 1993
she opened her own place, Macrina. All of Seattle knows Macrina's
irresistible artisan breads. Leslie's recipes reach well beyond Seattle,
from her appearances on Julia Child's "Baking with Julia" television
series to features on many Food Network shows. Leslie received a
1999 outstanding contributor award and several nominations for the
Outstanding Pastry Chef Award from the James Beard Foundation. Leslie
has written two cookbooks Macrina Bakery & Caf Cookbook and More
from Macrina. She is an active member in Les Dames d'Escoffier and
currently serves on the board of the Bread Bakers Guild of America.

Thanks for choosing us

to get where you need to go.
From UberBLACK to uberPOOL, its been a great ride.
Take a look at what weve built together in Seattle.

$500 million

66+ acres

10%

Since Uber launched in

Seattle in 2011, the
company has returned
more than $500 million
to the local economy, a
majority of which has
gone to driver-partners.

70 metric tons of CO2

emissions have been
saved by uberPOOL
riders - it would take 66+
acres of U.S. forest land
to remove that much CO2
from the atmosphere.

After uberX driver-partners hit the road in 2013,

DUI arrests decreased by
10 percent the next year.

RULES & REGULATIONS

GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION
Use your bid number, which you have received with your bid packet, for both
the live and silent portion of the auction. Your winning bid constitutes an
agreement to purchase the item at that price. All sales are final and there will
be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Please read
all detailed descriptions of items before bidding, including restrictions and
expiration dates. All items have no cash value.
Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually
arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. Tickets in travel packages
are for coach class unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on
travel packages for cancelled tickets and/or accommodations.
Greater Seattle Business Association has attempted to describe and catalog
all items correctly, but all items are offered as is. GSBA neither warrants
nor represents, and in no event shall be responsible for the correctness of
descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance or condition of the items. No
statement made in this catalog or made orally at the auction or elsewhere, shall
be deemed such a warranty representation or assumption of liability. Unless
otherwise noted, the expiration of gift certificates is November 19, 2017.
AUCTION SERVICE FEE
Thank you for supporting the GSBA Scholarship Fund, which is made
possible by your generous support. This year, in addition, most purchases
will be subject to a 5% processing fee. The fee helps offset costs
associated with producing the auction.
In particular, the fee helps cover:
1. Credit card fees charged to us by the bank
2. Computers and operators for registration and payment processing
3. Auction team services
On your statement of account, the fee will be listed as an administrative
and data processing fee. The service fee works by adding 5% to a
purchased item (so a $100 item is charged $105). The fee applies to all
items, except: Emerald Ticket, Celebrity Chefs Dinner ticket and the Funda-Scholar donations and pledges.
We recognize that service fees represent an additional expense for you, our
supporters. By generously accepting these fees, GSBA is able to direct as
much revenue as possible to our Scholarship Program. Thank you.

SILENT AUCTION
To bid on Silent Auction items, write your bid number legibly on the
silent auction bid form for the specific item. Bid raises must be made at
least in the minimum increments specified on the bid sheet, but you may
skip ahead to a higher bid. A Guaranteed Bid placed before the Silent
Auction closing time will end all bidding and guarantee the sale of that
item to the guaranteed bidder.
LIVE AUCTION
Simply raise your bid card when you wish to bid during the Live Auction. At
the end of the bidding for each item, the auctioneer will call out the winning
number. Upon winning a Live Auction item a runner will bring a live bidder
form to your table to be signed. A signature constitutes a legal contract to buy.
LIVE BIDDING FRENZY
During the live auction, the auctioneer will conduct a bidding frenzy with the
items listed in the chart in the auction catalog. The frenzies move fast, but
are a great way for everyone to play along and raise their paddle. You are the
lucky winner if your bid number is called at the end of the frenzy item.
FUND-A-SCHOLAR
At this point of the live auction, you will have the opportunity to support
students from our community. Simply raise your bid number when the amount
you would like to pledge is called out. You can raise your paddle multiple times
if you wish. The amount will be automatically charged to your account and can
be paid for with your other items. 100% of your donation goes to the Scholarship
Fund and is fully tax deductible, as allowed by law. If you would like to make your
payments over the course of the year, please ask the check-out staff to make
note and we will contact you to set up payment following the event.
ITEM PICK UP
All items must be paid for in full tonight. MasterCard, Visa, American
Express, personal checks, and cash are all welcome. Please make checks
payable to GSBA Scholarship Fund.
To check out, go to the cashier and state your name and bid number. Take
the voucher(s) you receive to the Checkout Area to claim your merchandise.
All items must be claimed and removed by the purchaser the night of the
auction. Larger items may be picked up at a later date agreed upon at
check out, and must be picked up before December 17, 2016.
All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items.
All items are sold as is.

Michael went above &

beyond any expectations we
had for buying AND selling
our homes.

Michael made me feel as

though I was his only
customer. It was a white
glove experience from end to
end.

Michael is extremely honest &

trustworthy. We were blown
away by his attentiveness,
responsiveness & attention to
detail.
