the physical environment in determining the character of any one historical

event, process or movement with which you are familiar. The physical
environment may include factors such as landscape, climate, or settlement
patterns, among other things-Roaring 20s
The 1920s are known as a time of immense industrial change, consumer
durables, improves rights for women, and increased prosperity. However, the
importance of the physical environment in determining the areas in which
this boom had greatest effect are rarely discussed, nor the importance of the
landscape in providing an opportunity for the emergence of roadside hotels
and restaurants.
City v. country. Women

Known as a time of sexual liberation for women. Yet the idea of

settlement patterns had a huge effect on determining how and in what
format changes for women took place

Progressive changes were confined to cities. This was as consumer

durables, mass production, all was extremely common in cities. In
cities women had been able to work during the war. Therefore they
continued to work after the war. In more rural places, women hadnt
really been ale to work during war

Main change was that women could wear shorter skirts, drink and
smoke in public, go out unaccompanied. They did this going to jazz
halls, or social areas. Something only possible in cities. The idea of
flappers therefore had to be confined to cities. Jazz clubs played a
crucial role in allowing the flappers to express themselves. This is
where they could smoke and dance.

However, women in the bible belt did not adopt this new way of life.
They lived in very rural areas in the south, therefore no jazz clubs,
therefore actually reacted against the changes and became more
strict, founded the anti-flirt club.

Depending where one grew up, would effect if they were likely to
become influenced by the roar of the 20s.

Many women roared their defiance of traditional female stereotypes,

experimenting with the traditional flapper lifestyle make possible by
the jobs that gave them economic independence to dress differently.
Roaring of defiance also extended to sexual liberation-there was a rise
in the number of women who smoked and used contraception.

City v. Country. Wealth

The physical environment had a great effect on who was wealthy in the
period. Wealth was confined to the cities.

Cities were growing quickly, people living in the cities were doing
better than those in the countryside and many people were moving
there for a better life

For the first time in history more people living in urban areas than rural
areas

Factories used mass production methods in a booming post-war

economy, there were roars on the floor of the stock exchange as the
patter of share ownership became more democratic and people traded
wildly believing the rising profits would never end

Prohibition

Physical environment had big effect on ensuring failure of prohibition in

the 20s

The border with Canada was so large it was impossible to patrol

completely. Therefore millions of dollars worth of alcohol crossed over
that border

Division of town and country finally broken

The physical environment of America meant forever there had been a

huge divide between town and country. Yet the mass production of
cars, was hugely successful and gave a massive boost to the economy
because of this problem due to the physical environment. It was finally
able to break the divide and thus they became united

Gave huge boost to all of economy as roadside hotels, gas, car

breakdown etc

Russias desperation to be in control of Eastern Europe and their takeover
can be attributed to the physical environment
Poland

The fate of Poland at the end of WW2 shows how little changes in
personality at the top really mattered when the rivals most important
concerns were at stake: neither Roosevelt nor Truman could ever have
dissuaded Stalin from installing a communist, pro-Soviet government.
Here geo-politics were arguably more important that ideology: the
Russians due to their history had been concerned about Poland for
centuries long before Russia became communist, so fear of another
invasion through Poland, justified with reference to geo-politics,
provides the strongest explanation for Stalins actions, which were
misinterpreted in the West as an aggressive not defensive move.

Build up of puppet states

The Germans were able to invade became governments hostile to the

Soviet union existed in those countries. as a result the Soviet union
had a loss of life several times greater than that of Britain and the
united states put together.. so wat is surprising about the fact that the
soviet union is trying to see that the governments in these countries
were loyal to the soviet union. Stalin didnt even try and deny he was
trying to bring about communist governments, but he justified it not as
trying to spread communism for a world takeover but instead to make
sure they were never invaded.
