Get Ready: Introduce the module and the key words. Introduce the benefits of volunteering cited by the
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (developing a sense of responsibility, making a personal
contribution to the community; understanding the needs of others; self-knowledge; overcoming fears

Exercise 1: Check that Ss understand the meaning of bullying, vandalism, graffiti, pollution and litter by
asking to translate the words into their L1. Teach new vocabulary that Ss need to talk about other
problems in their school or area.

Exercise 2: Give Ss time to read the text and match the people with the problems. Play the recording for
Ss to listen and read for gist comprehension. Tell Ss not to worry about understanding every word in the
texts at this stage but to focus on matching the people and problems.

Exercise 3: Ss work in pairs and try to figure out whether sentences are True or False. When checking
answers, ask Ss to correct the false sentences. Explain any unknown words.
Extra: Ask Ss to give their opinions about Claire, Wayne and Adams solutions to their problems.
Encourage Ss to discuss other solutions, e.g. How do teachers and students try to stop bullying at their
school?

Exercise 4: Give Ss time to look at the table and complete the sentences. Elicit answers. Ask Ss to write
on the board the comparative forms of thin (thinner), fit (fitter), easy (easier) and dirty (dirtier).

Exercise 5: Ss look at the picture and choose the correct sentence.


Extra: Write cues on the board for Ss to make comparative sentences about people and objects in the
