LOOKING INTO FISH SUSTAINABILITY

ABOUT

How does the disappearance of a species affect the environment?

Using science, mathematics and social studies

as a springboard into interactive research
and the visual arts as an innovative mean
of communication, we will use inquiry to
guide students into an understanding of fish
sustainability and guide them towards becoming
lifelong stewards of their environment.

RATIONALE

ASSESSMENT

Friesen et al. (2015) says, "the world today demands a well-rounded

individual who can pose questions and solve problems across the
disciplines." Interdisciplinary learning is a starting point for creating
these competent individuals. It not only provides multiple lenses
through which a problem can be solved, but it teaches students a
variety of other skills.
Without the in depth study in the disciplines, the students could not
successfully answer the essential question. Each discipline teaches
students concepts from the Program of Studies that begin to equip
them to answer the question. By the end of the five weeks, students
will have studied the essential question from four different lenses, with
their understanding being reflected in their art installation and final
artist statement.
The connection to curricular outcomes allow for an authentic investigation
into the issue, one that is both relevant and worthwhile.

Formative Assessment
There will be formative assessment for the duration of the
unit: discussion, journal entries, reflections, exit cards, think
pair share, teacher observation, Kahoot app,
Summative Assessment
The final art installation will reflect the students learning
over the course of the unit. Students and teacher create
the rubric together. Students write an artists statement
that explains how their art piece is a reflection/response
to the big question. Science database, social mixed media

INTERDISCIPLINARY
CONNECTIONS
Mathematics 9: Statistics and Probability
Collect, display and analyze data to solve problems.
Use experimental or theoretical probabilities to represent and solve
problems involving uncertainty.
Science 9: Biological Diversity
Investigate and interpret diversity among species and within species,
and describe how diversity contributes to species survival. Investigate
the nature of reproductive processes and their roles in transmitting
species characteristics. Identify impacts of human action on species
survival and variation within species, and analyze related issues for
personal and public decision
Social Studies 9: Economic Systems in Canada
Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of
how economic decision making in Canada impacts quality of life,
citizenship and identity.
Art 9:
Investigate natural forms, man made forms, cultural traditions and
social activities as sources of imagery through time and across
cultures. Understand that art reflects and affects cultural character.
Develop competence with the components of images: media,
techniques and design elements.
