Traffic protection switching

The network element traffic protection features provide the following configurations:

Unprotected : In unprotected topology, a trail can be configured between any two interfaces.
Here the traffic is not protected

Protected :
Two complete traffic paths are provisioned when a protected connection is set up
One of these paths is selected by the tributary to drop traffic and is called the work path
The other path called the protection path carries identical traffic and is available for selection by the
tributary in the event of failure in the working path

1+1 MSP Multiplex Section Protection

1+1 MSP is a port level protection supported on the STM-1 interfaces

This is so-called Bridging at sending site, selection at receiving site function
1+1 MSP works on principle that multiplexed optical signal is split into two channels of
identical signal that are transmitted on work and protect fiber line simultaneously,
thus forming a redundant route
At the receiving end, an optical switch selects one of the two channels as received signal
Protection switching mode configured can either be revertive or non-revertive mode
Non-revertive systems will simply change the definition of workingto describe the line
which is currently being used
Revertive systems will restore working traffic on the original path after the wait to restore
time (WTR)

The MSP groups can be configured as uni-directional or bi-directional

SNCP Sub Network Connection Protection

Sub-network connection protection (SNCP) is path protection switching

Traffic in the source network element is bridged on both work and the protection
paths while the destination network element selects the best of the signals from the
work or protection paths

The protection is performed at the TU-12 level

Protection switching mode configured can either be revertive or non-revertive mode

Non-revertive systems will simply change the definition of workingto describe the
line which is currently being used
Revertive systems will restore working traffic on the original path after the wait to
restore time (WTR)

MS-SPRING is SDH Protection Protocol defined for Ring network

This protections scheme optimize the network bandwidth usage, no dedicated source
is required for protection
Improved switching time under normal conditions
Allows extra traffic
Normal traffic is set to higher priority to extra traffic
