SPECIAL WORD ABOUT

DECORATIVE TIGHTING

Today, area lighting is no longer a

purely utilitarian matter. Use of decora-

tive lighting is expanding rapidly-to

add beauty and interest to buildings,
plazas, malls, parks, walkways, and
fountains.

The post-mounted units in this catalog are ideal for low mounting heights
( 10 to 20 feet) and either close-spacing

(50 to 100 feet) for uniform lighting,

or wide-spacing (150 to 200 feet) to
create light-and-dark effects that blend
l','ith the total appearance concept. The
fixtures are styled by the noted industrial designer Myron Pettingill for distinctive appearance day and night, as
well as good lighting effrciency.

For building facades, plazas, and

other architectural effects, door glasses
can be furnished in a number of special
colors. For large projects, General Electric can create specialty fixtures for un-

DESCRIPTION
Many area lighting applications require the use of horizontal slipfitter
luminaires rathe,: than conventional yokemounted floodlights. Versatile adapters

and adjustable brackets make installation and maintenance of these luminaires

easy.

Remotely mounted mercury ballasts

may be installed on either the universal
mounting adapter or pole-top adapter

with the built-in convenience of an integral wiring compartment meeting IJnderwriters' requirements.
Bollosl Adopters
(See Figures 16, 17, 18)
Poie-top ballast adapters are available
in a variety of floodlight and ballast combinations. This cast-aluminum adapter
fits 1]4-inch to 2)4-inch IPS pipe and

mounts any General Electric 6!(-inch

diameter or 7l(-inch diameter ballast and
any floodlight with a universal cross-arm
mounting bracket. It has a removable
wiring access cover for ease of wiring.
Wall- or pole-mounting ballast adapters
are designed to mount any Generai Electrtc 6'1-inch diameter or 7|d-inch diameter ballast on a vertical surface where
requirements call for a simple adapter
with integral junction box. It is made of
cast aluminum and has a large removable
wiring cover and f{-inch tapped conduit
entries on either side for entry or straight-

through wiring.

photoelectric control.

Swivel brackets for mounting horizontal 2-inch slipfitter luminaires on a

wall or parapet make such installations
easy to install and maintain without expensive aerial equipment. Al1 that is required is to loosen two set screws and

swing the arm over the parapet or against

the wa1l for servicing.

The roomy junction box is made of

cast aluminum and has a gasketed a1u-

minum wiring cover and ){-inch tapped

conduit openings top and bottom, both
sides, and in the back. Four flush plugs
are provided for the unused holes. The

2-inch standard pipe galvanized

steel

arms are sturdy enough to mount even

the largest power-pack luminaires. Either
4-foot upsweep arms or parapet mounting
arms are available.

4-woy Cosl Brocket

(See Fig. 12)
An attractive high-intensity area light-

ing unit is made possible by mounting

"Power Pack" Type M luminaires on this
cast-aluminum 4-way bracket for poles

with 3%-inch or 4-inch OD tops. The

flowing bracket lines blend right into the
luminaire. It is held securely in place with
four cup-pointed set scrervs. The large top
wiring cover a1lows ample room for making splices and may be modified to mount
a standard twistlock receptacle for photoelectric control, or the standard mul-

Fobricoled Pipe Brockel

(See

Fig.20)

An economy version of a 4-way bracket

is fabricated from standard steel pipe.
It is made up of one-foot sections of 2-

inch horizontal pipe arms arranged

around a 3-inch slipfitter, for mounting

on poles with 3-inch standard pipe tenon
top. The entire assembly is given a shop
coat of rust-inhibitive primer after
fabrication.
Cluster Mounling Adopter
(See Figs. 15, 19)

A pole-top adapter makes

possible

cluster mounting of f!-inch swivel mounting floodlights on 1]/-inch or 2-inch

standard pipe. The heavy cast-aluminum
slipfitter has a large gasketed access door
and three ll-inch threaded hubs with set

screws

for

securing

the swivel fitter.

Three set screws provide leveling of the

entire assembly.
The basic unit mounts up to three Par
Lampholders or three L-98 floodlights.
The fitter with two conduit arms is for
two QF-1500 or up to three QF-500
floodlights. The three-arm adapter will
take up to three QF-1500 floodlights.
QF floodlights for cluster mounting
should be ordered with 34-inch leads for
ease of wiring.

L-33 qnd L-41 Underwqfer Floodlights

TO USE
The Type L-33 and L-41 floodlights are
used principally in electric fountains and
swimming pools. They offer high efficiency, long life, a variety of beam angles,
clear or colored lighting effects, and assurance against deterioration in chemically treated or salt water. These units
are also recommended for general floodlighting in atmosphere too wet for ordinary weatherproof units, or where vaporWHERE

proof equipment is needed.

SPECIFICATIONS
Heavy-duty bronze casing and door
rings resist salt and chemicals in water.
Three Y+-inch pipe-tapped openings
perr4it breathing and draining through
pipe or hose used for wiring.
Sturdy, corrosion-resisting, hard-copper brackets on the Type L-33 and the
cast-bronzeoval base andtrunnionbracket

on the Type L-41 for easy installation.

Highly efficient silvered-glass reflectors

SPECIFICATIONS
Steel Brockets
A variety ofmounting arrangements are available for attachment to the top of hinged and rigid floodlighting poles to mount
slip-fitter floodlights and street-lighting luminaires.
Floodlight brackets have two-inch standard pipe tenons
supported at the center with a threaded fitting for attaching to
threaded pole tops. Two-inch center fitters fit th'e trvo-inch tops
of light- and heavy-duty poles; three-inch center fitters fit on
three-inch threaded tops of heavy-duty and extra-heavy-duty
poles.

Upsweep brackets, shown in Figs. 13, 14, and 15, are available with either 2-inch or 3-inch center slipfitter. Select 2-inch
slipfitter for heavy-duty hinged pole; 3-inch slipfitter for extraheavy-duty hinged po1e.

Select the bracket with the proper spread to allow horizontal

adjustment of the particular floodlight to be mounted and the
pole which will adequately support the total weight and
projected area of the units to be mounted.

Aluminum Brqckels
Floodlight mounting brackets have a two-inch-pipe horizontal member welded to a plate which, in turn, will be bolted
to a corresponding plate welded to the aluminum pole top. The
floodlight-mounting tenons are two-inch pipe, four inches long,
and are welded to the horizontal member far enough apart to
allow adjustment of the floodlights. Four one-half-inch hexagonal-head bolts are furnished with each bracket for attaching
tn the plate.

SPECIFICATIONS
Steel Poles
Heavy-duty, round, tapered, rigid steel poles for area lighting

applications are 1l-gage, single-piece construction with

guaranteed minimum yield strength of 48,000 psi. They are
available with plain top for large four-inch slip-fitter luminaires, with three-inch NPT tops for extra-heavy-duty loadings,
or with two-inch NPT for heavy-duty or single-light applica-

tions.

A heavy cast-steel base with flush-mounting bolt covers is

joined to the shaft by two circumferential welds at top and

bottom. An omple hondhole is cqst inlo lhe bose behind eoch
onchor boll and is covered when the bolt cover is in place.
Pole and base are given a shop coat of rust-inhibitive primer
inside and out. Hot-dip galvanized anchor bolts and plated
nuts are furnished with each pole.
Total weight and effective projected area ofluminaires to be
mounted should be considered in selecting the proper pole and
mounting arrangement.

Heavy-duty and extra-heavy-duty spun-drawn aluminum

poles for area lighting are available with four-inch outside
diameter top tenon for mounting large slip-fitter luminaires or
with a mounting plate welded in the top corresponding to a
similar plate welded to the mounting arrangements shown in
Section 9478. This allows for complete interchangeability of
poles and mounting arrangements for proper selection depending on the total weight and effective projected area of the
luminaires.

Aluminum shaft is spun drawn from 6063 alloy seamless tube

with nominal wall thickness of g-inch or greater. The base is

cast from 356 alloy and welded to the shaft at top and bottom,
The full-length assembly is then heat treated to T6 temper.
A four- by six-inch hondhole is provided with cast reinforcing frame and cover, Bolt covers and galvanized anchor rods
are furnished with each pole.

Each pole has a pleasing satin-ground finish and is tire-

wrapped for shipment.

The above data are based on a wind

velocity of 100 mph with a 1.3 gust factor
applied to the resulting pressure. Using an
assumed 15 lb/sq ft pressure (on cylindrical
surfaces), this gives total wind loading of
19.5 lb/sq ft. The allowable stress in these
tables is taken to be 0.6, the yield strength
of the material. Calculations are based on
the centerline of the luminaires being not
more than two feet above the top of the

pole.

WHERE TO USE
Steel Poles
Steel poles

for

ground-level maintenance may

be

heavy-duty square tapered poles with two-inch NPT top; and

extra-heavy-duty square tapered poles with three-inch NPT.
Proper selection of the pole and mounting arrangement depends on the total weight and effective projected area of the

used

wherever area lighting poles are required. The hinge feature

permits lowering the luminaires to ground level for servicing.
The hinge section is sturdily constructed and designed to
present a neat appearance when in the closed position. A springwire channel provides protection to the wire insulation when
the pole is lowered. The fu-inch-diameter hinge pin is housed in
an assembly that will provide free rotation without maintenance and that also acts as a stiffening diaphragm for the top
of the fixed portion of the pole. A springJoaded cover allows
the pole to rotate through an arc of 150 degrees, closing up to
form a weatherproof fit when the pole is returned to a vertical
position.

luminaires to be mounted.
The shaft is one-piece steel with 50,000 psi yield strength,

cold-formed for strength. The extra-heavy-duty poles have

low-alloy, high-strength Corten steel for additional strength.
The light-duty poles have a heavy plate with gussets at the
corners and handhole behind the shroud. Heavy-duty poles
have cast-steel base with flush-mounting bolt covers and hondhole behind eqch onchor bolt. Poles are given a shop coat of
rust-inhibitive primer after fabrication. They are shipped fully
assembled for ease of installation.
Lowering chains and winch with cable are furnished when
specified. They must be ordered separateiy. Only one chain or
winch is necessary per installation as they are detachable and
may be carried from pole to pol'e. Winches are advisable whenever the luminaire load exceeds 80 pounds.

SPECIFICATIONS
Three types of hinged poles are available: light-duty square
