By Jessica Howard
Theres less than two weeks until the 10th
annual Strawberries and Cherries Weekend.
The launch of the popular three-day event
was held on Thursday (November 3), with
fruit enthusiasts gathering together to bring
in the taste of summer.
Held at Naturipe Fruits in Bacchus Marsh,
the launch provided guests with an insight
into what the upcoming event has to offer.

Sweet and savoury delights made from
fresh local produce were enjoyed in hand
with sparkling shiraz and Moorabools ripest
and juiciest strawberries.
Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association
committee member, Helen-Mary Burnside
said organisers intended to take this years

event to a whole new level.

Ms Burnside said the main street of
Bacchus Marsh would be closed to traffic in
order to provide the community with safer
circulation, whilst allowing for an array
of market stalls to run from Young Street
through to Gisborne Road.
The festival will kick off at 5pm on Friday
November 18 with an open air cinema and a
myriad of food and coffee vans at the Village
Green in Bacchus Marsh.
Local orchards, farms and pick-yourown-fruit facilities will open their gates on
Saturday and Sunday from 9am and will
offer local produce to buy and taste.
On Saturday evening, guests are
encouraged to attend the Village Green
for a relaxed night of family fun that will

Cooling Deals

incorporate a colourful carnival, food, live

music and a laser light show. The Saturday
night event will conclude with a fireworks
spectacular, put on by the Village Bacchus
Marsh Shopping Centre, at around 9:15pm.
Ms Burnside said the association had taken
on feedback from last years event and as a
result would provide more car parks, public
seating, amenities and rubbish bins.
She said an all-day parking facility would
be located next to Westside Meats in Bacchus
Marsh, with three shuttle busses also
travelling up and down the main street and
another vehicle doing a loop to the train
station.
Peter Tonks, from the Bacchus Marsh
Tourism Association, said it was important
to cater to the whole community, whilst

giving those visiting a reason to return to

the region.
Local is really important and locals banding
together makes for a really successful region,
which makes it more likely for people to
come here on a regular basis, he said.
Its about teaching people to shop straight
from the farm and making fruit available on
a seasonal basis, rather than expecting it to
be ready all the time.
The Strawberries and Cherries Weekend
will be held from November 18 20.

Councillors declared

By Kate Taylor
After a glitch or two, all of
the votes for the Moorabool
Shire Council election have
been counted, and official
results declared.

Issues were initially raised

at the first count, which was
delayed by hours due to a
technical glitch in the Victorian Electoral Commission
computer system that sorted
the votes.

The second issue was the

appearance of a box of votes
that had not been counted

followed by an investigation
as to why they had not been
included in the first count.

The VEC finally revealed

that the Returning Officer
had labelled the votes as late
however they had arrived
during the extended postal
vote period, making them
eligible for counting.
Last week, the unearthed
box of votes was officially
counted.

The official declaration was

delayed by two days to account for the vote counting

of East, Central, and Woodlands Ward votes.

The East Ward councillors
are the returned David Edwards and Tonia Dudzik,
with John Keogh and Jarrod
Bingham newly elected; Paul

Tatchell was elected to the

Central Ward, Pat Toohey to
the Woodlands Ward, and
Tom Sullivan to the West
Ward at the official declaration, oath and signing of the
Code of Conduct last Friday.

Training to protect the community

By Jessica Howard
Local fire brigades have gone head to head to vie for the
annual Fiskville Cup.
The pre-fire season training exercise was created for the
Ballan Group of Fire Brigades, with the event hosted by a
different brigade each year.
Held at Mt Egerton on October 16, this years event saw nine
brigades take part in a round-robin style competition, with
Mt Wallace brigade reigning supreme and taking out the
silver cup.
Brigade member Gerry Lloyd received the Robert
Molesworth Memorial award for the Most Outstanding
Crew Leader alongside Blackwoods Jack Simmonds.
Over the years, exercises have included house and car
fires, gas cylinder leaks, car accidents, drug labs, electrical
incidents, off road driving and tyre changing.
Ballan Fire Brigade member, Chris Thom said the point
of the competition was to encourage new and experienced
members to get to know their appliances and improve their
skills before the upcoming fire season.
It is also an opportunity to meet other members from
outside their own Brigades as they may end up on the same
trucks at the larger fires, and to see new equipment and
techniques as they get introduced to the field.
Deputy Group Officer for the Ballan Group, Noel Conroy
said the event was first held in 1974 at the Fiskville Training
Facility.
In the early years we used to use all the props out there,
but down the track we decided to give all the Brigades a go
at hosting, he said.
The event was named after Fiskville as they were the ones
who supplied the Cup and all of the training, and in later
years the Fiskville staff helped us out with all the paper work
and morning teas.
Its a great training exercise for all of the Brigades involved.
The Ballan Group of Fire Brigades incorporates crews
from Ballan, Gordon, Greendale, Blackwood, Millbrook,
Morrisons, Mt Egerton, Mt Wallace and Wallace.

Police are investigating following an

incident in Bacchus Marsh last month that
may have involved a baseball bat.
Investigators have been told the victim was
following a car, described as a silver 80s or
90s BMW or Volvo station wagon, when it
pulled up at a stop sign on Bennet Street on
Monday 31 October about 4.15pm.
When the car did not move for some time,
the victim has beeped their horn.
The police media report said the driver of
the silver car got out of his car armed with
what is believed to be an orange baseball bat
and walked towards the victim.
The victim has reversed to get away from
the offender and collided with another car
which was behind him.
The offender has then gotten back into his
car and driven off west towards Gisborne
Road.
No one was injured in the incident.
Investigators have released a facial
composite of a man (pictured) they believe
may be able to assist with their enquiries.
The man is described as aged in his 30s,
about 180cm, with a medium build and short
dark hair.
At the time of the incident he was wearing

a black t-shirt and police believe there may

have also been a passenger in his car.
Anyone with any information is urged
to contact Bacchus Marsh police on 5366
4500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or
submit a confidential crime report to www.

Ballan will tune into an

iconic cello repertoire this
week as Miranda Brockman
presents Bachs Suite in D
minor.
The Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra cellist will perform in the candlelit surrounds of the historic Ballan
Uniting Church this Saturday (November 12).
Miranda is a keen chamber
musician who, as a child,
played in the Brockman
String Quartet and was later
a member of the prize-winning Lyric Trio at Melbourne
University.
She was a founding member of Trio Anima Mundi
and is frequently broadcasted on ABC and 3MBSfm,
particularly as part of the
trios highly acclaimed CD
released in 2013.
Miranda is a regular performer in the Melbourne
Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Series and other
regional Chamber Music
festivals.
The Ballan resident said she
was looking forward to performing in front of her local
community.

bourne, but here, playing for

your own community is really special, she said.
The audience will not only
be able to hear Bach, but
also some contemporary
and Australian Indigenousinspired music as well.
Following Mirandas performance will be Australian
composer, Carl Vine, who
will perform Inner Worlds,
an upbeat piece featuring
solo cello and compilations
of pre-recorded cello snippets imitating archetypal
Australian sounds.
Miranda said all proceeds
from the event would be donated to the Ballan Refugee
Realities Project.
I am part of the group and
we need funds in order to
run future events, she said.
I am appalled at the Australian Governments policy
on refugees and the way
in which our society acts
towards people who seek
asylum here. I am also particularly alarmed by the islamophobia that is evidently
rising in this country.
The Refugee Realities
Project aims to work on all
of these issues within our
local community whilst
creating a village that will
be able to welcome refugees
wholeheartedly.

Miranda Brockman will perform this Saturday in a special

By Kate Taylor
Djerriwarrh Health Services
has received $28,000 towards
even safer monitoring of
women giving birth.
The state government funding, under the new foetal
surveillance grant program,
is set to better develop the
skills and knowledge of all
staff providing maternity
care in monitoring the health
of babies prior to birth.
Improving foetal surveil-

lance was a key priority

following the review of stillbirths and newborn deaths
at Djerriwarrh Health Services, read a media release
from the state government.
We are providing significant funding to improve
quality and safety at rural
and regional hospitals such
as Djerriwarrh, with $16.8
million in the Victorian
Budget 2016/17 to support
this work.
This includes specialised

training programs relating

to emergency management
and maternity care led by
the Royal Womens Hospital for smaller rural health
services, and the strengthening of state-wide incident
and response management
systems. Staff at all health
services with maternity services are also now required
to undertake intensive training to help them better identify and address risks during birth.

The price
of being a
councillor

By Kate Taylor
When it comes to expense
accounts, Moorabool Shire
Councillors are pretty good
value for money.
Published in councils annual report, the councillors
expenses are the go-to information to find any rorting
but it appears the councillors have been thrifty with
ratepayer dollars.
There wasnt even one overseas trip, and not a single
chauffeur-driven dog in
sight, or helicopter flight.
In total, the shires seven
councillors listed less than
$14,000 in annual expenses
and as Woodlands Ward
Councillor Pat Toohey pointed out, the return on that
investment has been millions in government funding won by the work of the
councillors.
Cr Toohey spoke to the
Moorabool News about recent media reports that his
own expense account was
more than that of the other
councillors combined more
than $6,500.
The first of two categories
that expenses are broken
down into, Information and
Communication, including
each councillors iphone,
ipad, laptop, and associated
call and Internet expenses,
saw a bill of $1800 for Cr
Toohey.
But its not from him downloading Game of Thrones or
playing Pokemon Go its all
from council-related work,
and he can back it up.
I always carry my own

phone which has my own

business plan with unlimited calls, unlimited texts,
and 10 gig of data and in
my home I have NBN with
100 gig of data, and my
home phone, Cr Toohey
explained.
From a personal point of
view, I certainly have no
need to use council equipment for anything other
than council purposes.
The other category, Conferences and Training, has
also raised questions with
other media reporting him
spending nearly $5,000 on
personal development.
But he didnt.
The category also includes
travel expenses and, as the
lead voice on issues including roads and future water
infrastructure, Cr Toohey
travels to tell government
face-to-face exactly what
Moorabool needs, and how
much it will cost.
I travel to the National
Roads Conference annually
to meet with ministers and
advisors, and certainly out
of those road conferences
weve been successful in
winning resolutions on the
Halletts Way on/off ramps,
from me speaking personally to Minister Warren Truss
at the last conference, and
at the previous one we won
more than $2m for the extension of Halletts Way, lobbying the then Deputy Prime
minister Warren Truss on
that issue.
Also falling into that category was Cr Tooheys travel
to Canberra for the National

Local Government Conference to represent Moorabool.

And when you attend
these conferences, you have
to pay, and its generally in
the vicinity of $1200 to $1500,
which gets you in to then do
the work you need to do to
build for the future. Theyre
opportunities.
While in Canberra, Cr
Toohey also took documents
to Barnaby Joyces office to
promote the Parwan Employment precinct and the
significant water component of that project, and the
sewering and water projects
of Bungaree, Wallace and
Dunnstown, to put them on
the governments radar for
future funding.
The list also includes expenses such as meals and
accommodation for conferences in Melbourne and other places, where Cr Toohey
travelled as part of a panel
on a wind farm and a highlevel discussion about the
states future water program.
Every cent of that money
is expenses incurred while
doing the job as a councillor
that you were elected to do
making sure that state and
federal bureaucrats are fully
informed on the needs of our
communities.
And as for the $1800 phone
bill? It was for the whole
year.
Well I make a practice of
ringing people back often
it can lead to a quicker resolution of the problem.
As a team of councillors,
were pretty good value for
money.

Young Bacchus Marsh
residents are being pursued
by Western Water following
the
expansion
of
its
traineeship program.
Customer and Community
Relations general manager,
Graham Holt said Western
Water was looking for
school leavers to take
on
traineeships
whilst
studying for a Certificate
III in Business or Water
Operations.
We are always keen to
employ local people from
our region, which also takes
in Bacchus Marsh, he said.

This
is
a
fantastic
opportunity
for
young
people to get a start in
their career in customer
service, human resources or
operations.
Previous trainees (pictured),
Emma Vandenham and
Laura Hoffman, both 20,
recently graduated with a
Certificate III in Business.
This program has been
a great career start for
Emma and Laura, who have
impressed everyone with
their hard work, initiative
and team work, Mr Holt
said.
Since the completion of
the traineeship, Emma has

received a full time position

with Western Water as a
member of the Customer
Experience Team, whilst
Laura is in the planning
process of starting a career
in the aviation industry.
Laura said the traineeship
was a great opportunity to
start her career.
The staff I have worked
with have been wonderful
to me and always happy to
help, she said.
The
new
traineeships
will be advertised on the
Western Water website, in
local newspapers and on
SEEK.

Christmas trees will be the

product of a fundraising
campaigning as the Bacchus
Marsh SES and Rotary Club
unite.
The community volunteer
organisations are teaming
up to not only sell Christmas
trees, but will pick them up
after Christmas is over.
The
initiative
is
the
brainchild of Rotary Club
president Scot Pepin, and
he hopes it will be a big hit
within the Moorabool Shire.
This inaugural campaign
for funds will offer delivery
and pickup with our aim
to reduce wastage and the
dumping of the trees after

the festive season is over,

Mr Pepin said.
Bob Levy, a member and
past president of the Rotary
Club, believes with the
combined numbers and
efforts of the SES and Rotary
the scheme can be a big
success
Mr. Levy also highlighted
how important the drive
was for helping both
organisations
in
their
charitable aims in the New
Year.
Well be using the funds

we raise from it for our

youth services we have
in town, our Lets Read
program and our camps we
send many kids on and if
we have more funds we will
hopefully be supporting a
Vietnamese school.
If you would like to order
a Christmas tree they are
available on the 1st and
2nd weekend of December
at the SES Headquarters on
Gisborne Road. Pre-orders
can be made by calling Peter

Mum goes on
bloody long walk

By Jessica Howard
Bacchus Marsh mum Kat Barlow has taken on 35-kilometres
of footpath to help raise money
for Mitochondrial Disease.
Ms Barlow walked for her sixyear-old son Noah, who was
diagnosed with the rare disease
just 12 months ago. She was
joined by 13 of her friends at the
Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundations The Bloody
Long Walk.
Mitochondrial disease is a
chronic illness that causes debilitating physical, developmental
and cognitive disabilities. There
are no reliable means of diagnosis or treatment.
Ms Barlow said Noah had an
unknown form of the disease
that may be the only one of its
kind in the world.

She said he had experienced

multiple stroke-like episodes
that damaged five different areas of his brain.
Everything is affected, she
said.
He cannot eat any food and at
the age of six is still fed formula
through a tube. It affects him
from the top of the head right
down to the tip of his toes.
Ms Barlow said the point of the
35-kilometre walk was to raise
awareness.
She said a lack of understanding of the disease and misinterpretation of symptoms could
often lead to fatal misdiagnosis.
Despite the disease becoming
more diagnosed every day, nobody knows about it. People ask
me what is wrong with Noah
and when I tell them, theyve
never heard of it. But how could

they? Theres no research, no

cure and no treatment, she said.
We need a data base so that
all of the people who have been
tested can be documented. A lot
of children will pass away without even knowing that they have
mito and that is horrible.
Ms Barlow took on the 35-kilometre trek with her team Noahs
Ninjas, who raised more than
$11,000 towards the event.
She said she was blessed
to have such a strong team of
support.
We dont have any family in
Victoria, so to have so many of
my friends put their hands up
and say they would join in was
just so touching.
The day was brilliant and although the last five-kilometres
was torture, you reflect on the
journey youve taken. As youre

walking, youre thinking how

horribly dreadful it is, but every
day is hard for people suffering
with mito.
Noahs Ninjas were absolute
warriors and Im so lucky to
have 13 friends who would do
this with me.
The team aimed to raise $5,000
towards the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation

Its going to be a bad season for serrated

tussock and Moorabool farmers are being
warned.
The Victorian Serrated Tussock Working
Party (VSTWP) is advising that the recent
rains will result in a significant Serrated
Tussock (Nassella trichotoma) seeding during late spring and early summer this year.
Some areas across Victoria have had
record winter rainfalls, after a very dry
summer, which is the perfect storm for the
establishment and spread of the noxious
weed Serrated Tussock, said Community
Engagement Officer with the VSTWP Ivan
Carter.
Our extension officers have already
observed Serrated Tussock plants with
substantial numbers of seeds developing
around the Gisborne, Melton, Sunbury and
Ballan regions.
A mature Serrated Tussock plant can produce thousands of seeds per season, which
are wind-blown across the region up to 20
kilometres from the parent plant.
The VSTWP advocates that best practice
management is to control and treat mature
Serrated Tussock plants prior to flowering
and seeding each season with a registered
herbicide or manual removal/cultivation.
With the season looking ideal for the further growth and spread of Serrated Tussock,
the VSTWP would like to ask landowners
and managers to act now to prevent further
seeding and detrimental impacts of this
noxious weed.
Serrated Tussock is highly invasive and
quickly becomes established, dominating
landscapes, reducing agricultural productivity and decreasing biodiversity in native
grasslands.
It is estimated that Serrated Tussock has
infested over 130,000 hectares of land in
Victoria alone, and once it takes hold, large
infestations require ongoing management
and can be expensive to treat.
The VSTWP has a range of information
readily available on how to identify Serrated
Tussock, and how best to manage infestations and prevent new infestations from
establishing.
Our website is full of useful information
including videos on identification, landowner case studies, the The Tussock Times
newsletter and the latest research into treatment options.
For further information, please visit www.
serratedtussock.com, or contact the VSTWP
on info@serratedtussock.com.

The council elections are over and there are

two new faces what are your expectations
of councillors for the next four years?

By Steven Barnes

They need more consultation about doing

things to keep the youth occupied and off the
streets. - Lyn (Bacchus Marsh)

They need to help the elderly by putting in

more pedestrian crossings on busy roads.
- Latza (Bacchus Marsh)

They need to look at the state of our roads.

They need maintenance to fix up the potholes
in them. - Margie (Dales Creek)

I would hope they make more speed

humps in Simpson Street (Ballan) to slow
the traffic down. I would like them to be
quicker at making decisions for planning
permits.
- Norma (Ballan)

They need to consider the younger

people in our community by supplying
activities that give them a sense of value
and keeps them busy.

Fishtailing in car parks and driving

whilst under the influence of drugs
were cases brought before the bench in
the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court
last week.
On August 28 this year Brian Jones was
alleged to be driving an unregistered
Commodore vehicle on Gell Street in
Bacchus Marsh at around 4:30pm at the
time of the offence, the court heard he
dropped two men off near a loading
zone and upon leaving the area the
car then fishtailed before police were
called to the scene.
In his defence Mr Jones argued that on
the day of the offence his mechanic had
been working on the vehicle and the
clutch failed to engage properly which
caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
Mr Jones, a truck driver by trade, was
fined $400 without conviction.
In another case later that day Matthew
Stiff pleaded guilty after being caught
with an illicit drug in his system whilst
driving.
On May 11 this year Mr Stiff was found
to have taken methamphetamine and
his reasoning to the court ultimately
being, Because I was stupid.
Magistrate Frank Jones handed Mr Stiff
a $300 fine as well as suspending his
license for three months and ordered
him to complete a drug education
course.

Dear Editor,
It has been reported that
Councillor Pat Toohey has
made a yearly expense bill
claim that is nearly as high
as that for all other councillors combined.
$6675, including a telephone

bill of $1802.
This has been questioned,
quite rightly.
Can Mr Toohey release an
itemised, independently verifiable telephone bill? This
will either justify his claim,
or raise concerns.

As a ratepayer paying for

this enormous yearly payment, I believe we all deserve a detailed explanation.
Over to you, Mr Toohey.
Please explain.

Country Racing; a great leveller

There is something special about the Ballan

Cup; I cant remember the first time I went
to the Cup, but I can remember who I went
with.
Catching up with Bruce Whyte and his
family on Saturday, whilst chasing my
granddaughter Grumpy up and down
the stairs of the Committee room, I was
reminded of something Bruce had said to
me after spending a day with him at my very
first Ballan Cup.
Tatch, horse racing is a great leveller, and
he wasnt talking about the horses. Anyone
that was at the Cup in Geelong on Saturday
would know exactly what Bruce was talking
about. Whether its a dollar each way on the
long shot that came home, or you backed a
Bentley on the big one, having a win makes
you a winner, and everyone celebrates.
Im not a punter, and I wouldnt know a
Group One winner from a draft horse, let
alone know how to pick a winner, in fact the
horses I follow tend to follow other horses,
but I do love a country race meeting and
everything they stand for.
Country Cups have been around since
horses took themselves to the races; its a
bush institution that unites communities
and brings old friends together as the hustle
and bustle of the modern world keeps us

apart. For people that have left a community

its the ideal event for a yearly catch-up, and
for newcomer its the ideal place to blood
yourself into a community.
Country race meetings provide the perfect
format for entry level trainers to compete
with the professionals, and budding
Melbourne Cup connections to own a piece
of racing thoroughbred without the million
dollar price tag; the only barriers in country
racing are the ones they jump out of.
Over the last few decades we have seen a
number of country racetracks close due to
the high maintenance costs of running the
facilities; there was a time when nearly every
major town in Victoria had one. The closure
of the Ballan track in 1969 hasnt deterred
the steely determination of the Ballan Jockey
Club.
The Ballan Jockey Club was formed in 1857
and continues to keep up the tradition of
country racing by using the Geelong venue
for its annual race meeting.
The Ballan Jockey Club does a fantastic
job in putting on the event, under the
direction of newly elected President, and
well known Ballan identity, Billy Smith and
CEO Catherine Moon; the Committee works
tirelessly all day to keep the punters and the
party-goers in the festive spirit.

The club used the Ballarat facility from 1969

until 2000 and has made the Geelong venue
its spiritual home for the last 16 years; locals
flock to the Ballan Cup every year and the
event is well supported by country people
up and down the shipwrecked coast.
The enormity of running a race day cant
be understated; The Ballan Cup is a family
day and is held in the same spirit. There
is Fashions on the Field, the obligatory

Jumping Castle, full access to the horses, and

the owners and jockeys make themselves
available in a relaxed atmosphere.
Marquees are available for special events
within the event, and dining packages
compliment the committee room for
business, families, or just catching up with
friends; the event caters for all budgets, all
genres and an affordable way to promote
your local business in sponsoring a race.
Thoroughbred Racing Victoria generates
over $2.1 billion to the states economy and
provides employment to the equivalent
of 19,600 full-time jobs throughout the
State (63% from the rural sector). There
are more than 1600 racing club volunteers
across the state and close to 500 community
organisations are financially supported by
thoroughbred racing.
Breeders, owners and trainers form an
integral part of the bush economy. A recent
study revealed that there were 50,000 owners
and connections, 1700 breeders, and 1000
trainers working up to 10,000 horses across
the state, predominantly in rural Victoria,
The Ballan Jockey Club are doing their
bit, and should be applauded for their
professionalism in producing a memorable
event, representing our region and the
people that live in it.

Ballan Cup
If there is one race to win for
a jockey at a meeting, it is the
Cup.
With the rail true for the
entire circuit, jockey Daniel
Moor guided long shot London Fog the 1500m distance
to be first past the post by
half a length, from Orient
Line and Flying Light.
Coming from barrier two
and carrying 54kg the combination raced and rode to
perfection. The 5-year-old
gelding recorded his fifth
win from 22 starts and the
locals couldnt be happier.
The tote paid $25.10 for the
win and $4.80 for the place.
Trained
at
Freshwater
Creek by Jaime Edwards
and owned and bred by a
Geelong West syndicate, the
Cup was a real local affair,
with The Geelong Hotel the
major sponsor of the race.
Simon Coghlan owner of
the Geelong Hotel said it
was a great result.
It has been a real pleasure
to sponsor the Ballan Cup
and it was a great race with

local connections being able

to celebrate this win.
Jockey Daniel Moor said
this was his second Ballan
Cup win.
I won it before but honestly
cant remember when, it was
a fair while ago.
Moor rode in six races for
the day, from an eight race
card, and the Cup was his
first win (Race 6), recording
another in the last, Race 8;
aboard the Danny OBrien
trained Frankincense.
The Ballan Cup is held
annually at the Geelong
racecourse on the Saturday
after the Melbourne Cup
and races are supported
by many local businesses
including: Tatchells Transport, Avis Ballarat & Western District, Ace Kitchens &
Cabinetry, Ballan & District
Community Bank, Ballan
& District Health and Care,
The Geelong Hotel/United
Wool, Cornerstone Stud
Rosebowl and Aaron Toohey
Accounting.

claim the 2016 Ballan Cup.

Cup sponsor Simon Coghlan (The Geelong Hotel) chats to

winning jockey Daniel Moor at the presentation after the
Cup win.

Winners! These young boys were very excited to hold the

Ballan Cup after their parents horse London Fog claimed
the victory.

Darley Cricket Club

Results Round 3
(Seniors)
Darley v Ballarat-Redan
The coin toss fell in the favour of the First XI Lions
captain Heath Pritchard,
and he wasted no time in
electing to bat first in the
first two-day encounter of
the season, and his team
delivered well, compiling a
score of 8/264 from their allocated 80 overs, which they
will be confident of defending next Sunday.
Much like last weeks win
over reigning premiers
Golden Point, the Lions put
together a solid team performance in making their runs,
and whilst opener Lachie
Herring top-scored with 45,
seven of the ten Darley batsmen scored in double figures
on the day.
Pritchard again elected to
open the batting with Herring, and the two put on an
opening wicket partnership
of 38 runs before Pritchard
was dismissed for 24, which
allowed Jake Wilkie to join
Herring at the crease.
Wilkie and Herring advanced the score to three
figures with some patient
batting against a tight Two
Swords bowling attack before Herring lost his wicket
for a well-made 45. Zac
Ticehurst then joined Wilkie
and continued with his impressive batting form from

Round 1, moving the score

to 144 before Wilkie was
caught for 35.
The Lions then suffered a
slight middle-order collapse,
with Hasitha Wickramasinghe departing for 9 and
Matt Cape for 8 to have the
innings delicately poised at
5/169, but some good batting by Ticehurst (42 runs)
and Brad Barnes (32), Drew
Locke (15) and wicketkeeper
David Hoey (19 not out) allowed the Lions to reach
their final total of 8/264,
which theyll be confident
of defending with a strong
bowling attack next week.
The Darley seconds have
some work to do in the second half of their two-day
fixture against Brown Hill
next week. After winning
the toss and sending the
Bulls into bat, Darley bowled
them out in the final over of
the day for 287, a target that
will take some chasing next
week.
Hayden Jamieson
returned the best bowling
figures of the day with 3/88,
with brother Beau also taking two wickets and one
wicket to economical opening bowler Hamish Wheeler
and young guns Mitch
Ward, Ryan Densley and Jye
Stephenson.
The Third XI was dismissed
for 142 in their two-day
game against Mount Clear at
the Hub, which would have
been much less if not for a
rearguard innings by young
Bryce Galea, who made 35
runs towards the lower order to give the Lions a score
to defend. Darley bowled 11
overs to finish the day and
will be looking for quick
wickets next week, with
Mount Clear sitting on 0/19

at the end of play.

Darleys Fourth XI went
down for the second week
in a row in their one-day
fixture against Coronet
City, with Coronet batting
first and scoring 4/286, with
Jayden Hayes taking two of
the Lions four wickets. In
return, Darley were bowled
out for 187, despite a promising start by openers Paul
Ticehurst (22 runs) and Darren Hynes (46 runs).
Juniors
16 & Under v Mount Clear
After winning the toss and
batting first on the Darley
Park turf, the young Lions
struggled to establish partnerships against a strong
Mount Clear bowling lineup, with their innings lasting less than 24 overs before
being bowled out for just 52
runs. The Lions were looking okay with the score at
2/34, but when top-scorer
Mitch Ward was bowled for
17 runs on that score and
Jordan Monaghan (11 runs)
was dismissed in the same
fashion just three runs later,
it sparked a middle-order
collapse that saw the Lions
bowled out well before the
end of play. In response,
Mount Clear made their way
to 4/92 by the end of play,
with Lions skipper Corey
Beaton taking two of the
Mounties four wickets.
It was much better news for
the Lions 14 & Under 2nd XI,
who are a long way towards
securing first innings points
in their two-day game
against Golden Point Blue at
Mount Pleasant. The Lions
bowled well to hold Golden

Point to 8/76 in their allotted

25 overs teams bat for 25
overs each on the opening
day of the game and then
continue their innings the
next week if not dismissed
with Luke Hayward returning figures of 3/6 from
his four-over spell, with
Zane Colley also taking two
wickets. In reply, the Lions
compiled a solid score of
4/112 off their 25 overs, with
Aaron Cadman (34 runs)
and Rockey Hoey (29 runs)
steering the ship nicely.
Details from the 14 & Under
1st XI match against Golden
Point were unavailable at the
time of writing.
In the Friday night Under
12 competition in the Melton
Junior Cricket Association,
the two Darley sides are in
strong positions in the opening day of their two-day encounters. The Darley Pride
are in the box seat in their
game against Ballan, with
the Pride holding Ballan to
5/65 in their allotted 20 overs
after Ballan won the toss and
batted first, then scored 3/99
in their 20 overs to ensure a
strong position heading into
the second day next Saturday. The Darley Cubs are
also in a good position in
their game against Melton
South Primary School CC,
holding Melton South PS to
5/77 from their 20 overs after
sending them into bat first,
with Malakie McLoughlin
returning figures of 2/2 off
three overs, with the Cubs
then making 4/98 off their
20 overs, with Angus Jones
making 28 runs, Malakie
McLoughlin making 10 and
Jackson Hunt not out on 10 at
the close of play. Both games
will resume next week.

Elaines Senior A Grade captain Joel MacArthur has praised

a young teenager in his team.
Nicholas Pantzidis (pictured) is just 14-years-old and made
his first 50 runs in the Senior one day game.
Nicholas batted really well which helped the team come
away with the win.
He even took two valuable wickets, Mr MacArthur said.
The young cricketer used a bat his ill grandfather had used,
and then his uncle, and was given to him just two weeks ago
from Sydney.
Nicholas had an emotional wish that came true.
My goal for the season was to make my first 50 in the
seniors, and to be able to use this very special bat to achieve
that had such sentimental value for me and my family, he
said.
