The consolation of Israel
For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so
our consolation also aboundeth in Christ. And
whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation
and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring
of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or
whether we be comforted, it is for your consola-
tion and salvation. And our hope of you is stead-
fast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the
sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
II Corinthians 1:5-7
Websters tells us that consolation refers
to alleviation of misery or distress of
mind; refreshment of spirit; comfort;
that which consoles or comforts the
spirit. Thus it was that the godly man
Simeon was promised that he should
not see death, before he had seen the
Lords Christ (Luke 2:26). He was
waiting on the consolation of Is-
rael that is, on the Messiah, the
Christ. Seeing the infant Jesus, Simeon
praised God and spoke of His salvation,
which thou hast prepared before the
face of all people (Luke 2:31). Gods
promise to Simeon was fulfilled, and

the Christ did indeed come into the
world. In the course of events, by the
time Peter spoke to Cornelius, Gods
salvation was brought unto all people.
Today we, too, are recipients of this
heavenly consolation. We too can alle-
viate our misery and distress, and re-
fresh and comfort our spirits, if we will
accept the Lords Christ. We are
adopted children of the spiritual Israel
that is Gods chosen nation today. This
brings the peace that passes under-
standing (Phil. 4:7) not a temporary,
earthly comfort, but a deep, spiritual
refreshing that should last through our
lives here, and the life to come.
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself,
and God, even our Father, which hath
loved us, and hath given us everlasting
consolation and good hope through
grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish
you in every good word and work (II
Thess. 2:16-17). Let us take these good
words of Pauls and remember that we
have been consoled in the best way
possible.
