Stockton/ South Jersey Climate

Stockton is situated within South Jersey. Its climate classification is Moist Continental as seen in
the North America Climograph. Stockton, as well as most of the eastern United States, is in a Temperate
Deciduous Forest biome. Since it is such a large biome its plant species vary greatly but the dominant
plant species are broad-leaved deciduous trees. Precipitation also varies greatly, from 28 -60 inches per
year.
There are five factors that affect climate. These consist of latitude, air masses, elevation,
coastal/continental location and surface type. Coastal location affects Stocktons climate the most out of
all of these. Stockton is in close proximity to the ocean. Oceans have moderating effects on temperature
and this effect can be seen in Stocktons climate.

Table 2 Stockton Soil Pit 2 Description

Stocktons Soils
Stockton consist of many soil orders as seen in the Soil Orders on Stocktons Campus Map. It has
Entisols, Histisols, Inceptisols, Sand/Gravel pit, Spodosols, and Ultisols. The campus in Pomona is mainly
made up of Ultisol soil, it makes up 48.5% of the campus soil order. The soil order that makes up the
least amount of the composition of soils is Inceptisol soil. Entisol is a soil that do not show any profile
development other than an A and C horizons. Histisol is a soil consisting primarily of organic materials.
Inceptisol is a soil with little development but still more than Entisols. Spodosol is a soil with subsurface
accumulation of humus. Ultisol is a soil that has been strongly leached and has a clay accumulation in
the subsurface. Examples of soil samples taken from Stocktons Campus can be seen in Table 1 and
Table 2.
There are five major factors that influence soil formation in all soils. These are Climate,
organisms, relief or topography, parent material and time. The factors that are more prevalent on
Stocktons campus are climate and organisms. Climate determines the kind of plant and animal life on
and in the soil. It determines the amount of water available for weathering minerals, transporting the
minerals and releasing elements. Organisms affect soil by supplying upper layers with organic matter,
recycling nutrients from lower to upper layers, and helping to prevent erosion.

Stockton Water Budget

Stocktons water budget is generally simple. The map Water and Wetlands on Stocktons
Campus shows all of the surface water across the Pomona campus. It has a delicate balance of water
inputs and outputs that is essential to its ecology. The inputs to Stocktons water budget are
precipitation, groundwater flow in, and stream flow in. Average precipitation is about 3 inches per
month. The outputs to Stocktons water budget are evaporation, groundwater flow out, and stream flow
out. Evapotranspiration varies from about 0.2 75 cm per month. Major water storages are Lake Fred,
Lake Pam and groundwater.

Stocktons Place in Local Hydrology

Stockton plays its distinct role in the areas hydrology. HUC 12 is part of the Nacote Creek
watershed, as seen in the Lake Freds Watershed on Stocktons Campus map, and has an area of 19216
acres. Two streams flow into Lake Fred, Cedrick Run and Morses Mill. Morses Mill also flows out of the
lake and makes its way to the Mullica River. From there the water eventually flows into the ocean.
