What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)
Essential Understanding
(What is the big idea or
essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)
Objectives- What are you
teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to
do after this lesson? Include
the ABCDs of objectives:
action, behavior, condition,
and degree of mastery, i.e.,
"C: Given a sentence written
in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able
to re-write the sentence in
future tense D: with no errors
in tense or tense contradiction
(i.e., I will see her
yesterday.)."

Lesson Content
SC.5.N.1.3 Recognize and explain the need for repeated experimental trials.
SC.5.N.2.2 Recognize and explain that when scientific investigations are carried out, the
evidence produced by those investigations should be replicable by others.
SC.5.N.1.4 Identify a control group and explain its importance in an experiment.

How can you use the scientific method to solve a problem?

Students will use their knowledge of the scientific method to conduct and experiment so
solve a problem.

Note: Degree of mastery does

not need to be a percentage.)
Rationale

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have
mastered your objectives?
Address the following:
What formative evidence
will you use to document
student learning during
this lesson?
What summative evidence
will you collect, either
during this lesson or in
upcoming lessons?
What Content Knowledge
is necessary for a teacher
to teach this material?
What background
knowledge is necessary for
a student to successfully
meet these objectives?
What misconceptions
might students have about
this content?

This lesson is being taught in order to prepare the students for their stem fair projects
using the scientific method.
Observation
Discussions
Collected student work. I will give students a problem and they will have to show me how
they would solve it using the scientific method and provide details for each step.

Students should be familiar with the Scientific Method steps and vocabulary.
Students should also have some exposure to Newtons
Students should be able to problem solve and work together in groups/partners.

Students may have a hard time figuring out what is a testable hypothesis and what is an
opinion.
Lesson Implementation

Teaching Methods
(What teaching method(s) will
you use during this lesson?
Examples include guided
release, 5 Es, direct

Direct instruction
Demonstration
Group discussion

Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough. Act as if you needed
a substitute to carry out the
lesson for you.)
Where applicable, be sure to
address the following:
What Higher Order
Thinking (H.O.T.) questions
will you ask?
How will materials be
distributed?
Who will work together in
groups and how will you
determine the grouping?
How will students
transition between
activities?
What will you as the
teacher do?
What will the students do?
What student data will be
collected during each
phase?
What are other adults in
the room doing? How are
they supporting students
learning?
What model of co-teaching

Time

Each content area may require a different step-by-step format. Use

whichever plan is appropriate for the content taught in this lesson.
For example, in science, you would detail the 5 Es here
(Engage/Encountering the Idea; Exploring the Idea;
Explanation/Organizing the Idea; Extend/Applying the Idea;
Evaluation).

Hand out the graphic organizer and the pre-printed text

Have the student cut the graphic organizer out on the dotted
lines
As we go over each step of the scientific method as we take
turns reading the text aloud, each student will be writing the
information on the appropriate flap of the graphic organizer
Review each step as a group before going on to the next step
Present the Prezi to show how you can resolve a problem
using the scientific method
https://prezi.com/thbvp4hy3zo8/the-scientific-method/

On a separate piece of paper, give the students a problem

and using that piece of paper, have them write out their steps
they would use to solve the problem using the scientific
method
Once everyone is done, come together as a group to share
how everyone chose to solve the problem
Review again how I would use the scientific method to solve
the problem
Collect the papers and have the students glue their graphic
organizer into their science journals.

a student struggles with the content?

Individual support and time. Provide examples that reflect that students own personal
interests. Partnered work on a case by case basis.
a student masters the content quickly?
They can use their graphic organizer to start working on their stem faire project outline.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
This reflects their cultural beliefs because problem and experimentation is an element
used in their everyday life.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This connects to the community because it the students are working to develop problem
solving skills, collaboration works on creating a sense of community, which are qualities
that reflect a good citizen skills.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
They can either create their own problem to show how they would solve a different
problem using the scientific method. They will also have a choice to use this information
to work on their stem faire project.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
If needed translated materials, individual assistance and time will be provided if needed.
They are already working with a partners, but may work in a larger group if needed.
Z- may need additional support when they move onto their individual work due to
possible unfamiliar vocabulary
