C hris Fontenot is admittedly more of a lover

than he is a fighter, but the personable bass pro/
fishing guide from Nacogdoches, Tx., still likes getting into
a good, old fashioned brawl every now and then. He always
likes it best when a burly largemouth delivers the first punch,
especially when the violent blow comes from the blind side
and there is an unsuspecting frog lure on the receiving end.

Frog fishing is one my favorite things to do -- I love it, said

Fontenot. Its not something that will work every day, but
when the bass are on it the bite can be almost like magic.
L onnie Stanley can relate to Fontenot's
frog fishin' phobia. A veteran lure maker and five-

it almost seems like you are playing self defense out there.

gluttons for punishment. Frog baits feed both obsessions. They also can help add
some serious weight to a tournament sack if the timing is right.

To wit:
Fontenot and his team partner, Jaret Latta, have put together a banner season in
2010 that at last count included eight Top 10s and one win on various regional
circuits. According to Fontenot, Kermit has played a major role in their success all
year long. We have used the frog in every tournament and caught a lot of key fish
on it, he said. Plus, it helped us locate some big fish that we ultimately caught
using other baits. In the segments that follow, the two anglers discuss the ins and
outs of fishing a frog while sharing some valuable tips to to help you score next
time you take Kermit for stroll:

Anatomy of a Frog
There are two styles of frogs -- the floating hollow body and buzz frog. The angler
imparts the action on a hollow body frog by using a combination of rod tip and
wrist action to make it dance side-to-side or walk the dog. A stop-and-go retrieve
can be productive, as well. Especially when throwing a popper-style frog with a
cupped nose. The hollow body usually comes pre-rigged with a double hook,
which rides snug against the hindquarters to resist fouling on weeds or brush.
The frogs body compresses when the bass eats it, thus exposing the hooks. While
there are easily more than dozen companies that make hollow bodies, Fontenots
favorite is the Spro Bronzeye, mainly because it has a serious hook with plenty of
bite. The hook sticks up a good half inch when the body compresses, he said.
Thats critical in my opinion. The wide bite naturally increases the chances of a
fish getting hooked and staying buttoned.

Soft plastic buzz frogs have two legs and feet that sputter and churn as the bait
is retrieved across the surface, thus the title buzz frog. The amount of thump

Fontenot likes to throw the Bronzeye when targeting bass that are hanging tight to
willows bushes or beneath overhanging tree limbs and boat docks, mainly because
the baits physical design lends itself to skipping. It takes some practice, but once
you get it down that bait will skip like a flat rock, he said. You can skip it way
up into tight spots you cant reach with other baits, and it really seems to aggravate
the fish.

Stanley says buzz frogs can be effective around docks and brush, but as a rule these
baits are more at home traversing lily pads, pepper grass, eel grass and hydrilla
beds. He likes to target water 1-4 feet deep in close proximity to a creek channel or
drop off. He pointed out that edges, points, holes or pockets in weed beds, or areas

Even more important is a high quality hook. As earlier mentioned, hollow bodies
are sold with hooks pre-rigged. Buzz frogs are not.

There are a several good buzz frog hooks on the market, but Fontenot contends that
none compare to the Stanley Double Take, a long shank double hook introduced
earlier this year. Though it was designed around the Stanley Ribbit and Zoom
Horny Toad, the hook matches nicely with some other brands, as well.

The Double Take holds the toad secure at the rear by hooking through the base of
each leg and at the nose using a spring keeper. The hooks ride flat on top of the
frogs rump without restricting the enticing action of the legs and boot-shaped
feet. Stanley said the design naturally turns more frog strikes into solid hook-ups.
A lot of the strikes you get on Ribbit are directed at the legs and feet, because
that is where the action is at, he said. The Double Take catches a lot of fish
that might miss a traditional single hook. Plus, it keeps them buttoned up much
better. If they eat a frog with the Double Take, its usually game over if you get
them stuck.
