Canadian Plas-cs Industry Associa-on

Serving as the na-onal voice of the plas-cs industry in
Canada since 1943!
Member driven advocacy associa=on represen=ng the majority
of the 3,170 companies employing 95,000 workers in Canadas
$30 billion plas=cs industry.
Members from across the country and the value chain.

Declara-on for Solu-ons on Marine LiSer

Plas-cs Industry Views

Plas=c and other liOer in the environment is

unacceptable

Plas=cs deliver signicant societal benets, including:

energy, GHG and resource savings
innova=ons that improve health care, reduce food

spoilage and improve quality of life

For society to receive these benets, plas=cs must be

properly recovered so that liOer does not threaten the

marine and other natural environments

Declara-on for Solu-ons on Marine

Debris
Announced at UN/NOAA Marine

Debris Conference, March 2011

Six-point strategy for industry ac=on

Advocates close coopera=on with

range of stakeholders to create

solu=ons

>60 associa=ons from 34 countries

185 projects since launch in 2011

Declara-ons Six-Point Strategy

1. Contribute to solu=ons through partnerships to prevent

marine debris

2. Research to understand scope, origin, impacts

3. Promote enforcement of exis=ng laws to prevent marine

liOer

4. Spread knowledge of ecient waste management systems

5. Enhance recycling/energy recovery opportuni=es
6. Steward plas=c pellets from supplier to customer

CPIAs Marine-based Projects

Zero Pellet Loss is a priority for the global plas=cs industry,

and an important issue for our environment

Spilled pellets can make their way into local waterways, and

eventually end up in the oceans

Opera=on Clean Sweep (OCS) is an interna=onal program

designed to prevent resin pellet, ake or powder loss and help

keep pellets, akes and powder out of the marine
environment

SPI rst launched OCS in 1992; new campaign started in 2011

with SPI, ACC and CPIA providing joint outreach and educa=on

CPIA is the Canadian licensee of OCS and promotes the program

to the Canadian plas=cs value chain, including our members as

well as non-member companies
Currently, 113 Canadian OCS registrants, including 107 individual

companies and 6 supporter partners

Launched the Clean Sweep newsleOer for all par=cipa=ng

companies and associa=ons

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

CPIA sponsors and par=cipates in the

annual na=onal cleanup event

GCSC is an ini=a=ve of Vancouver

Aquarium Marine Science Centre and

WWF-Canada, and is Canadas largest
contributor to the Interna=onal Coastal
Cleanup
Throughout 22-year history of GCSC,

more than 1.2 million kilograms of shoreline liOer have been

removed from Canadian waterways
In 2014, nearly 140,000 kg of liOer was removed from 2,500

km of shorelines across Canada

2015 Pilot Project with Great Lakes

2016 Expansion of Project with Great

Lakes Fisheries
CPIA commiOed to ongoing project in 2016
Focus will be to engage and educate commercial shers on

Lake Erie, while also suppor=ng the establishment of recycling

infrastructure to make it easy collect and recycle materials and
prevent liOer

Ongoing discussions with Ontario Ministry of Natural

Resources and Forestry, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Small

Plas-cs are Too Valuable to Waste

1. Plas=cs make a posi=ve contribu=on to the three pillars of
sustainability
2. Plas=c packaging has high value in recycling and energy
recovery
3. Communica=on and educa=on needed to inform the public
on the ecient use and management of plas=cs
4. Partnership models create unique outreach, collec=on and
recycling opportuni=es
