Displacement
Always displace to the FLOAT COLLAR unless otherwise stated
Guidelines
STAB-IN Cementing
Displace to 10 -15 feet before the stab-in shoe
Check returns if OK pull out of stab in shoe and reverse circulate
Guide Shoe
Displace to 20-30 feet before the shoe
Create an artificial shoe track volume
Avoids a potential wet shoe

NEVER OVERDISPLACE
You may only displace the theoretical casing volume to the float collar
If the plug does not bump, you are allowed to displace a maximum of the shoe
track volume

14

Slurry Yield
The volume of slurry produced when one sack of cement is mixed with
the appropriate amount of water is called the Yield
The unit of slurry yield is ft3/sack

Mix Water Requirement Calculation

If you know the number of sacks of cement then you can multiply this
number by the mix water requirement in gal/sk and you will find the mix
water required.
CONVERT TO BBLS
WHY convert to bbls?
Your displacement tanks are in bbls

Mix water requirements per sack of cement are calculated using absolute
volume calculations.

21

Water Quality
In the laboratory, clean location water is used for testing cement. Test
results are only obtainable in the field when the same water is used.
Causes for contamination:

Dirty rig tanks

Left over chemicals/mud in lines and pumps
Dirty displacement tanks
leaks

Water quality should always be verified on location

pH
Chlorides

22

Problem 1: Mix Water Requirement

Lead Slurry Mix Water
303 sks * 8.326 gps = 2523 gal
2523 gal / 42 gal/bbl = 60.07 bbl

Tail Slurry Mix Water

114 sks * 4.871 gps = 555 gal
555 gal / 42 gal/bbl = 13.2 bbl

Note: 1 bbl = 42 gal

23

Mix Fluid Requirement Calculation

Mix Fluid is the sum of the mix water plus any liquid additives plus any
solid additives which are added to the mix water
Mix Fluid = Mix Water + Liq. Additives + Dry Additives (added wet)

Preblended solid additives are not part of the mix fluid

If you know the number of sacks of cement then you can multiply this
number by the mix fluid requirement in gal/sk and you will find the mix
fluid required.
CONVERT TO BBLS
Mix fluid requirements per sack of cement are calculated using absolute
volume calculations.
24

Problem 1: Mix Fluid Requirement

Lead Slurry Mix Fluid
303 sks * 8.336 gps = 2526 gal
2526 gal / 42 gal/bbl = 60.14 bbl

Tail Slurry Mix Fluid

114 sks * 5.081 gps = 579 gal
579 gal / 42 gal/bbl = 13.8 bbl

Note: 1 bbl = 42 gal

25

Additive Requirement Calculation

Solid Additives are calculated as a % by weight of dry cement
Except: D044 NaCl Salt is calculated as BWOW
Solid additives are added to the dry blend

Liquid Additives are calculated as gallons of additives per sack of dry

cement (gal/sk or gps)
Liquid additives are added to the mix fluid

26

Problem 1: Additive Calculation

Lead Slurry Additives
D020:
D047:

303 sks * 94lbs/sk * (6/100) = 1708.9 lbs

303 sks * 0.04 gal/sk = 3.03 gal

Tail Slurry Additives

D080:
D047:

114 sks * 0.2 gal/sks = 22.8 gal

114 sks * 0.01 gal/sk = 1.14 gal

27

Dead Volume
Tank Dead Volume is the remaining volume of fluid in the bottom of the
tank depending on the height of the discharge valve from the bottom of
the tank

For Mix of the Fly: Mix Fluid = Theoretical MF for the slurry + dead
volume of the mixing tank
For Batch Mixing: Mix Fluid = Theoretical MF for the slurry + dead
volume of the batch mixer
28

Problem 1: Mix Fluid Requirement with Dead Volume

Calculated Lead Mix Fluid = 60.1 bbl
Calculated Tail Mix Fluid = 13.8 bbl
Lets add dead volume to the mixing tanks
Lead mixing tank has a dead volume of 10 bbl
Tail mixing tank has a dead volume of 5 bbl

New Mix fluid requirement now becomes

Lead = 60.1 bbl + 10 bbl = 70.1 bbl
Tail = 13.8 bbl + 5 bbl = 18.8 bbl

Since we have more mix fluid then what we started with, we are now
required to add more mix water and more additives to compensate
29

Problem 1: Mix Water Requirement with Dead Volume

To recalculate the additives and mix water, the dead volume can be
thought of as a percentage increase over the original mix fluid amount.
The mix water will increase by the same percentage
All the additives in the mix fluid will increase by the same percentage
The following method may be used
% Increase = Mix Fluid with Dead Volume / Original Mix Fluid Volume

Lead Slurry Mix Water with Dead Volume

60.07 bbl * (70.1/60.1) = 70.06 bbl

Tail Slurry Mix Water with Dead Volume

13.2 bbl * (18.8/13.8) = 18.0 bbl

30

Problem 1: Additive Requirement with Dead Volume

Now lets calculate the additive required including dead volume
The % increase method may be used

Lead Slurry additive requirements

D047
303 sks * 0.01 gps * (70.1/60.1) = 3.53 gal
D020
303 sks * 94 lb/sks * (6/100) = 1708.9 lbs
D020 is a solid additive and it is preblended, dead volume does not apply

Tail Slurry additive requirements

D080
D047

114 * 0.2 gps * (18.8/13.8) = 31.1

114 * 0.01 gps * (18.8/13.8) = 1.55

31

Thickening Time Requirements

Cementing Key Service Quality Requirements (KSQR) require a safety
factor on all slurry thickening times
The Well Services Slurry Thickening Time Requirement is as follows
The minimum slurry thickening time must be the greater of either
Job Pumping Time * 1.5
Job Pumping Time + 2 hours

Job Pumping Time

The pumping time for each slurry is considered to be from the time when the
cement comes in contact with water until the end of the job
If there are multiple slurries in the design, then the pumping begins at the start of
each slurry

33

Differential Pressure Calculation

Hydrostatic Pressure
The pressure created by a column of fluid
If the density and length are known, the Hydrostatic pressure can be calculated
PHyd = r * L * 0.052
where r is in ppg and L is in ft

Bottom Hole Pressure

The sum of hydrostatic pressures from all fluids in a column

Differential Pressure

The difference in fluid column pressure acting across a body (drill pipe or casing)
Only happens when there is an annular space
In general the annular pressure should be larger the casing pressure
Can be calculated as follows
DP = PHydAnnular PHyd-Casing

47

Problem 2: Mix Fluid Requirement with Dead Volume

Calculated Lead Mix Fluid = 480.3 bbl
Calculated Tail Mix Fluid = 22.14 bbl
Lets add dead volume to the mixing tanks
Lead mixing tank has a dead volume of 40 bbl
Tail mixing tank has a dead volume of 10 bbl

New Mix fluid requirement now becomes

Lead = 480.3 bbl + 40 bbl = 520.3 bbl
Tail = 22.14 bbl + 10 bbl = 32.14 bbl

Since we have more mix fluid then what we started with, we are now
required to add more mix water and more additives to compensate
48

Problem 2: Mix Water Requirement with Dead Volume

The following method may be used
% Increase = Mix Fluid with Dead Volume / Original Mix Fluid Volume

Lead Slurry Mix Water with Dead Volume

459.3 bbl * (520.3/480.3) = 497.6 bbl

Tail Slurry Mix Water with Dead Volume

250 sks * 6.671 gps / 42 gal/bbl = 39.7 bbl

250 sks * 7.271 gps / 42 gal/bbl = 43.3 bbl

Note: 1 bbl = 42 gal

62

Problem 3: Mix Fluid Requirement with Dead Volume

Calculated Lead Mix Fluid = 206.2 bbl
Calculated Tail Mix Fluid = 43.3 bbl
Lets add dead volume to the mixing tanks
Lead mixing tank has a dead volume of 30 bbl
Tail mixing tank has a dead volume of 20 bbl

New Mix fluid requirement now becomes

Lead = 206.2 bbl + 30 bbl = 236.2 bbl
Tail = 43.3 bbl + 20 bbl = 63.3 bbl

Since we have more mix fluid then what we started with, we are now
required to add more mix water and more additives to compensate
63

Problem 3: Mix Water Requirement with Dead Volume

The following method may be used
% Increase = Mix Fluid with Dead Volume / Original Mix Fluid Volume

Lead Slurry Mix Water with Dead Volume

196.9 bbl * (236.2/206.2) = 225.5 bbl

Tail Slurry Mix Water with Dead Volume

39.7 bbl * (63.3/43.3) = 58.0 bbl

64

Problem 3: Additive Requirement with Dead Volume

Now lets calculate the additive required including dead volume
The % increase method may be used

Lead Slurry additive requirements

D020
796 sks * 94 lb/sks * 0.08 * (236.2/206.2) = 6857 lbs
D080
796 sks * 0.1 gps * (236.2/206.2) = 91.2 gal
D109
796 sks * 0.05 gps * (236.2/206.2) = 45.6 gal
D020 is prehydrated, so it is added to the mix fluid and has dead volume included

Tail Slurry additive requirements

D066
250 sks * 94 lb/sks * 0.30 = 7050 lbs
D081
250 sks * 0.1 * (63.3/43.3) = 36.5 gal
D603
250 sks * 0.5 * (63.3/43.3) = 182.7 gal
D066 is added to the dry blend and is not included in the mix fluid
