Body Harness Design Engineer

Product Development Team

Overview
The Body Harness Design Engineers are responsible for designing the main body electrical harness. All
subsystems of the electricalonics team will branch off of this harness using jumpers or connections. The
harness must be neat and be designed in such a way to improve organization as well as capability to
protect the wires. There should be no random strands of wire; these strands should be replaced by
jumpers.

Qualifications
A BHDE engineer should:

Have a thorough understanding circuit analysis and design techniques

Be able to calculate voltage drop and select wires according to the expected current
Be proficient with SolidWorks in order to determine wire lengths
Have good communication and organization skills

Responsibilities
BHDE responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Collecting information using the Harness Interface form from electricalonics team members
Using HI data to design the body harness
Use the provided current estimates from the HI to calculate required wiring size
Ensure adherence to the FSAE 2017-2018 rules
Ensure a presentable harness is created with minimal opportunity for damage

Timeline of Activity
Fall Quarter
Construct the dynamometer wiring harness for the engine team to use for turbocharger development
and analysis. Evaluate various electrical schematic CAD tools and select the best available package.
Distribute HI forms and begin schematic drawings.

Winter Quarter
Finish the schematic. Verify the schematic with the entirety of the electricalonics team. Make any
adjustments suggested by the team. Create the nail board printout and begin wiring harness
construction. Test the wiring harness to ensure proper construction, then begin bundling and protecting
the harness. Assist Systems Engineers in their hardware-in-the-loop activities and provide debug
guidance.

Spring Quarter
Determine ways to improve next years wiring and training process. Be on call in case of wiring damage
or failures and make repairs or redesign as necessary. Create a second body harness, budget permitting.

Systems Engineer
Systems Integration Team

Overview
The Systems Engineers assemble the entirety of the electricalonics system on a table and power the
system with a bench power supply. Then using CAN tools, multimeters, and other devices, the Systems
Engineers diagnose system issues. This could be a missing CAN message, or a programming error, or a
damaged wire/incorrect pinning of a connector. After finding issues, the Systems Engineers
communicate with the team to seek issue resolutions or debugging assistance.

Qualifications
A Systems Engineer should:
Have a good knowledge of simple electrical circuit principles
Know how to use lab equipment, such as a power supply and DMM
Have a basic understanding of CAN protocol
Have good intuition and problem solving skills for debugging wiring harnesses
Know the general purpose of each device in the electricalonics system

Responsibilities
Systems Engineering responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Issue identification
Debugging wiring issues
Debugging CAN communication issues
Communicating with all electricalonics engineers
Devising functional checklists to ensure complete testing of the system

Timeline of Activity
Fall Quarter
The Fall Quarter will consist of collecting feature lists and devising functional checks to perform on the
completed electricalonics system. Further, training for debugging and communication with
electricalonics team members will be important to prepare for systems integration.

Winter Quarter
The Winter Quarter will include final preparations for systems integration and performing functional
checks on the electricalonics system. Any issues discovered should be resolved as quickly as possible.
The method of testing will be hardware-in-the-loop.

Spring Quarter
The Spring Quarter will see the installation of the electricalonics system on the vehicle. Issues
identification and resolution will continue. Any new issues should be classified either as undiscovered or
as caused by installation. New functional checks should be added to ensure previously unidentified
issues are resolved. Investigation should ensue for those caused by installation. All issues need to be
resolved immediately.

CANcomm Engineer
Systems Integration Team

Overview
The CANcomm engineers are responsible for designing the CAN communication strategy. The CANcomm
team assigns message IDs to Firmware Design Engineers (FDE) per their requests, and keeps track of
these messages in a sensible format. CANcomm must also communicate with the DAQ team to
coordinate messages.

Qualifications
A CANcomm engineer should:

Have a thorough understanding of the CAN protocol

Be able to prioritize messages using understanding of the involved systems and urgency
Be organized and have good communication skills

Responsibilities
CANcomm responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assigning message IDs to messages requested by FDEs

Maintaining a message list
Keeping the DAQ team up to date about the message list
Communicate with wiring team to ensure proper CAN wiring design
Assist Systems Engineers with CAN debugging

Timeline of Activity
Fall Quarter
Communicate with the FDEs to get a preliminary message list. Also talk with the DAQ team about what
messages they intend to collect. Ensure that safety related messages are given proper priority. Begin
prioritizing all messages and recording their relative frequencies.

Winter Quarter
Finalize message list and distribute to electricalonics team for review. Take note of any issues raised by
electricalonics team members and resolve accordingly. Assist the Systems Engineers as they debug the
CAN network and wiring harness.

Spring Quarter
Continue to assist the Systems Engineers as they debug the vehicle. Begin preparation for next year and
resolve any CAN issues that may arise as physical testing takes place. Log CAN bus data and determine
bus utilization percentage and other pertinent statistics. Use this data to revise next years strategy.
