"Grenade" by: Bruno Mars

Easy come, easy go
That's just how you live, oh
Take, take, take it all
But you never give
Should've known you was trouble
From the first kiss
Had your eyes wide open
Why were they open?
[Pre-Chorus:]
Gave you all I had
And you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, you did
To give me all your love is all I ever asked
'Cause what you don't understand is...
[Chorus:]
I'd catch a grenade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Throw my hand on a blade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I'd jump in front of a train for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know I'd do anything for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for you, baby
But you won't do the same
No, no, no, no
Black, black, black and blue
Beat me 'til I'm numb
Tell the devil I said "Hey" when you get back to where you're from

Mad woman, bad woman
That's just what you are
Yeah, you'll smile in my face then rip the brakes out my car
[Pre-Chorus:]
Gave you all I had
And you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, yes you did
To give me all your love is all I ever asked
'Cause what you don't understand is...
[Chorus:]
I'd catch a grenade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Throw my hand on a blade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I'd jump in front of a train for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know I'd do anything for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for you, baby
But you won't do the same
[Bridge:]
If my body was on fire
Oh, you'd watch me burn down in flames
You said you loved me, you're a liar
'Cause you never, ever, ever did, baby
[Chorus:]
But, darling, I'd still catch a grenade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Throw my hand on a blade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I'd jump in front of a train for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know I'd do anything for you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for you, baby
But you won't do the same

3. Highlight 5 examples of figurative language

above.

4. In the box below, explain why each of

those five examples is figurative language.
Use complete sentences.

I'd catch a grenade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah) is an example of a hyperbole

because Bruno Mars is exaggerating, saying he would die for the person the song
is directed to.

Throw my hand on a blade for you (yeah, yeah, yeah) is also an example of a
hyperbole because Bruno Mars exaggerates that he would bleed and lose his own
vital part of his body for his lover just to show how much he loves her.

I'd jump in front of a train for you (yeah, yeah, yeah) is one more example of a
hyperbole. Bruno Mars says that he would jump in front of a train just for his
lover; however, it is just an exaggerated way of saying that he would sacrifice his
own life just to protect his lover.

Gave you all I had And you tossed it in the trash is an example of symbolism.
Bruno Mars gave all of his love away to his lover, but she didnt feel the same way.
The words tossed it in the trash symbolize the rejected feelings because items
thrown away are usually useless and not wanted.

If my body was on fire Oh, you'd watch me burn down in flames is an example
of imagery details. When listeners hear the words fire and flames, they usually
always depict a burning fire in their minds. In the song, the two verses explain in a
way of how apathetic Bruno Mars lover is. The verses basically paint an image of
suffering into listeners heads. If Bruno Mars was to be set on fire, the verses
basically state that his lover would just watch him suffer in pain instead of trying
to help him.

5. Underline diction in the song that helps you
understand the tone above.

6. Italicize diction in the song above that

helps you understand the mood.

7. In the box to the right, write a short

paragraph describing the tone of the author
and its effect on the readers mood by
quoting (and citing) examples.

The tone the author uses somewhat

expresses feelings of depression and sorrow.
By using diction that points to dismal
emotions, Bruno Mars makes
listeners/readers take the song more
seriously. Expressing the pain felt allows for
people to comprehend the story on a deeper
and personal level. As seen in many verses,
Grenade shows how much Bruno Mars was
willing to sacrifice just to make his lover
content even though she faked loving him
back. Some examples are Oh, I would go

through all this pain Take a bullet straight

through my brain a
nd
Yes, I would die for you, baby But you
won't do the same which is found in the
last four verses of the chorus. These verses
express how Bruno Mars, even with all the
pain caused, was still willing to die for her,
even if she didnt do the same. Not
receiving something back that was wanted
can lead to gloomy and depressed feelings.
One more example of how the tone is
sorrowful is To give me all your love is all I
ever asked due to listeners getting
depictions in their heads that portray Bruno
Mars not receiving love back. By
understanding that the author is
writing/singing in a sorrowful tone, listeners
can assume that the mood the author
wants them to feel is filled with painful,
regretful, and suffering emotions.One
example of the mood is Tell the devil I said
"Hey" when you get back to where you're
from because it mentions the devil which
resembles suffering and negative actions.
Throughout the song, Bruno Mars talks
about how his lover didnt love him back
even though he willingly gave all of his
love to her. Another example is Gave you
all I had And you tossed it in the trash
because it expresses how even though
Bruno Mars gave everything, she just
played with him like he was a toy and
tossed aside his strong, loving emotions
which he now regrets. Overall, the tone of
sorrowfulness helps listeners determine the
painful mood because when people are in

pain, they also are usually despairing.
When a person is in pain, it goes in hand
with being sad because it isnt normal to be
injured whether physically or emotionally.
