Eligibility
The Hamilton Award recognizes young people for their academic, personal, service,
and entrepreneurial accomplishments, and 35-40 students are selected annually to
participate in the Alexander Hamilton Scholars (AHS) leadership program. Our
winners are high-achieving, service-focused high school juniors with grit,
perseverance, and demonstrated need. All applicants should be college-bound, and
committed to participating in our rigorous leadership program, designed to provide a
comprehensive network of support and practical guidance to Alexander Hamilton
Scholars as they transition from high school to college and beyond. AHS is named for
Alexander Hamilton, the only founding father born into poverty. As a result of
mentorship, guidance, and a scholarship to attend college, Hamilton was able to
leave a lasting legacy that forever changed the United States. With AHS' support, our
Scholars strive to do the same.
Program
Provided at no cost to the student, the program consists of individual support through
phone calls and emails with AHS staff members and an assigned peer Scholar
mentor. Group support and learning is offered through conference calls, and each
year of the program also includes a leadership conference hosted in various cities,
including an international service project during Year 3. All curriculum is designed
around our 5 Curriculum Pillars:

- TRANSITION: Focus on key periods that research has identified as being

particularly challenging for underserved youth: high school to college; college to
career
- HERITAGE: Instill the idea that understanding the history of the United States is
vital
to
claiming
personal,
political,
and
social
power
- EMPOWERMENT: Convey the knowledge and confidence to excel and thrive as
they pursue their ambitious goals
- FINANCIAL LITERACY: Provide understanding of the financial aid process,
budgeting tools and awareness, debt-management skills, and informed investing
- LEADERSHIP: Impart Alexander Hamilton's legacy of principled character and
commitment to public service in the face of adversity as the basis of true leadership
Winners will also receive: a $500 cash scholarship to pay for college application
and testing fees, an autographed copy of Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton, an
autographed copy of William Chrystal's Hamilton by the Slice, and a proclamation
signed by Arthur Hollingsworth, the fifth great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton. Biosketches of winners appear on the AHS website, and news releases are sent to city,
state, and federal elected officials, as well as to local media outlets. In addition, all
winners will have access to AHS internship programs and will join a distinguished
cohort of peers from across the U.S. This unique Scholar community extends back
through 10 years of cohorts, and members support one another as they take steps
together towards achieving a college education and a meaningful career, eventually
becoming leaders who change their own communities, our nation, and our world
through their service, innovation, and excellence.
Interested applicants for the 2017 Hamilton Award can apply online. All
applications must be submitted by January 13th, 2017 at 11:59 pm PST.
