c. Posters with 7 different sentences and blank spaces in them for vocabulary words
to be pasted on.

Fluency
a. 2nd grade 110.3 (10) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Literary
Nonfiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the
varied structural patterns and features of literary nonfiction and respond by
providing evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are
expected to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction.

Vocabulary
a. TEKS: 2nd grade 110.3 (5) Reading/Vocabulary Development. Students
understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. Students are
expected to: (B) use context to determine the relevant meaning of unfamiliar
words or multiple-meaning words.
i. Abacus (AB-uh-kuhs) a frame with beads used to add, subtract,
multiply, and divide. (Pham, pg. 15)
ii. Artificial intelligence (ahr-tuh-FISH-uhl in-TEL-i-juhns) the science of
creating computers that can think like people. (Pham, pg. 15)
iii. Calculate (KAL-kyuh-layt) to find out by performing math. (Pham, pg.

iv. E-mail (E-mayl) messages sent between computers over the internet.

context clues.
xi. The teacher will model skimming and scanning the text for vocabulary
words to look for their meanings.
xii. Then the teacher will have the students read the book & verbally tell the
meaning of the word based on the context.

the meaning of the word.

TEKS: 2 grade 110.3 (14) Reading/Comprehension of Informational
Text/Expository Text. Students analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about
and understand expository text and provide evidence from text to support their
understanding. Students are expected to: (B) locate the facts that are clearly stated in
a text; (D) use text features (e.g., table of contents, index, headings) to locate specific
information in text.
New Read
a. Computers Then and Now by Thao Pham, Chapter 2 How Computers Have
Changed; People have always used tools to make counting numbers easier.
Hundreds of years ago, you might have used an abacus in math class. This tool
helped people calculate large numbers.
i. The students and the teacher will then read the informational nonfiction
text.
b. Before Reading:
i. Have a K-W-L chart
ii. Students will fill out the K and W part of the chart.
iii. Students will look at page 4 and look for captions, bold/italicized words,
or pictures.
iv. Students will look at page 5 and look for captions, bold/italicized words,
or pictures.
v. Students will look at page 6 and look for captions, bold/italicized words,
or pictures.
vi. Students will look at page 7 and look for captions, bold/italicized words,
or pictures.

i. Would you say that there has been a major change through time, with the
way technology is?
ii. While reading page 4 the students will be thinking about how an abacus is
useful. Also how Wilhelm Schickard designed what the first computer.
iii. While reading page 5 the students will be thinking about what a Z3 was
and what it did.
iv. While reading page 6 the students will be thinking about how important it
is for computers to have microchips.
v. While reading page 7 the students will be thinking about how many things
in todays world has microchips. Also who Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak
were.
vi. While reading page 7 the students will be thinking about what they
wonder about technology in the past and now.
vii. I wonder if the technology we have today was used in the past would
have made a difference in the way of life?
d. After Reading:
i. The students will need to complete the L part of the K-W-L chart.
ii. Students will locate the facts that are clearly stated in a text (TEKS)
expectation. The students will also be able to understand how to read the
table of contents and how it shows what titles are and what pages they are
on. The students will also be able to explain what the index is for. Lastly
they will be able to explain the headings meaning.
