Entry Paper Work Sheet

Name: Georgia Harrison
Date: 8/30/16
Minor or electives or cluster minor: Biology major with concentration in ecology with a minor in
Chemistry. Thinking about adding minor in Outdoor Education and Interpretation.
Semester and year you declared this major: Declared major Fall 2015 (first semester), declared
chemistry minor Winter 2016 (second semester). Have yet to declare minor in Outdoor Ed. &
Interp.
Anticipated Graduation date: May 2019
Content Development: Answer the following question as thoughtfully from your current
perspective.
1. What do you see as your current strengths as an Outdoor Recreation Leadership and
Management (OLRM) major?
I see my current strengths as an ORLM minor to be previous experience in the field, through
work at KNC Summer Camp for the past 5 summers. My time at camp has taught me how to
effectively lead a group of campers, facilitate activities (ranging from hikes and games to zip line
and watercrafts), plan days of camp as well as weeklong camping trips, work with other staff
members, and mostly how to adapt and evolve through the ever-changing nature of camp. I also
feel another strength of mine is experience planning events and coordinating activities for nonoutdoor related activities as well as personal trips (mostly hiking, camping and climbing). I feel
that my time spent in Marquette working with other rock climbers and being able to take a
leadership role, through bringing and teaching new climbers is also a strength.
2. What do you see as your current challenges (weakness) as an OLRM major?
My main current challenge through OLRM is the fact that I am not a major, and have not
officially declared a minor. While there is no doubt I have an interest in the field, it is hard to
dedicate to something I have not completely committed to. While I enjoy OLRM and would like
to use it in a future career, I sometimes have a hard time fitting it in with other college
curriculum; for example, my hard science lectures and labs. I know they are important skills and
I hope to continue on with the program, it is defiantly not a priority in my education.
3. What will you do in the future to improve OLRM skills?

To improve ORLM skills I plan to stay involved with the climbing club and ORC, keep planning
personal camping and climbing events , remain engaged with environmental issues and working
with the Marquette community, and recertify my Lifeguard (general, waterfront, and watercraft)
certification this March when it will be up and WFA next year when that will expire. In addition,
I will look for summer courses where I can gain certifications and experiences. I have a total
dream one in mind involving WEMT certification, and rock and avalanche rescue training. I will
try and balance biology courses and interests with experiential education. Also, I will keep
looking for environmental education and outdoor recreation jobs for the summer as I transition
away from camp. I am particularly interested in working with youth programs in a new
environment, but would like to still be able to use skills gained while working at camp
(watercraft, zip line and ropes facilitation).
4. In what OLRM areas would you most like to improve?
I would like to improve in theoretical and education skills related to OLRM. I am particularly
interested in improving facilitation. I had the opportunity to facilitate some this summer and I
know it is something I would like to continue on doing, I just need more confidence guiding
discussion and explaining guidelines. Overall, I feel awkward during facilitation. I would like to
smooth out the process and help group better debrief regarding their activities.
