About the breakfast:
The Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast commemorates the 88th anniversary of Dr.
King's birth with a breakfast honoring his life and his dream for social change.
Tomorrows Leaders are young persons who excel in community volunteerism,
leadership and civic responsibility and their efforts are recognized during the event.
The City of Jacksonville is pleased to offer the opportunity for deserving
elementary, middle and high school students to be nominated as a Tomorrows
Leader at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast, Friday, January 13, 2017 at the
Prime Osborn Convention Center. Educators can nominate a deserving student who
exemplifies the ideals and principles of Dr. King.
Guidelines for participation:
Nominations will be accepted for students in grades 4 - 12 in Duval, Clay,
St. Johns and Nassau counties.

This is a two part process. After the student is nominated by a teacher or


organization, the student must then submit a 500 word essay to be
considered.
*Essay guidelines and criteria are listed on page 2.
- One (1) student will be selected from the elementary, middle and high school
category as the 2017 Tomorrows Leaders and recognized at the 2017 Martin
Luther King Jr. Breakfast.
- One (1) runner-up from each of the above categories will be recognized at
the 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast.
- Multiple students from the same school can be nominated.

Submission:
- Nomination forms and essays must be submitted no later than Tuesday,
November 17, 2016. Entries submitted after this date will not be considered.
- Nomination forms may be submitted by a parent if the student is home-schooled.
- Nomination forms may also be submitted by a non-profit community
organization (nominations from commercial entities will not be accepted).
- Nominations can be mailed, faxed or emailed to the City of Jacksonville Office of
Special Events.

Timeline:
- Nominations due: November 17th

Essay:
There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic
nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.
This is your challenge! The topic for this essay, as indicated in Dr. Kings quote,
is
What does it mean to do the right thing? Why do you think some people choose to
do the easy thing as opposed to the right thing?
(essay must be 500 words or less)

Criteria:
To be eligible for nomination, a teacher, parent or non-profit community
organization must submit a nomination form outlining examples of the
students character and service to others. Must be submitted with the essay by
Nov. 8th.
Nominations will be reviewed for completeness as a condition of selection.
Nominees will be required to submit a typed essay, not more than 500
words, based on the topic described above.
Judging will be based on the writing guidelines used in the Florida Standards
Assessment.
Essays should demonstrate focus, organization and conventions.
Focus refers to how clearly the paper presents and maintains a main
idea, theme, or unifying point.
Organization refers to the structure or plan of development (beginning,
middle, and end) and the relationship of one point to another.
Conventions refer to the punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and
sentence structure.
Awards & Recognition:
Winners and runners-up will receive complimentary tickets for two guests
to attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on Friday, January 13, 2017
at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.
Winners will be recognized at the breakfast, recite their essay and receive an
award.
Winners and runners-up names and schools will be included in the 2017
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Breakfast program and highlighted on the official
event website: JaxMLKBreakfast.com.
