Master's Programme in Toxicology, 120 hp

Masterprogram i toxikologi, 120 hp, 120.0 Print

Second level, Full time
The Masters Programme in Toxicology aims to give advanced understanding of how toxic substances affect biological
systems at molecular, cellular and organism levels. The programme is multidisciplinary and includes many different
subjects that interact with each other. The identification and synthesis of chemical substances for the development of
new products are increasing exponentially. Society, at the same time, is placing ever higher requirements that chemical
substances and products are to be safe for health and the environment, increasing in this way the need for qualified
toxicologists. You will yourself choose courses within the programme that will create a personal profile for your expertise,
including cellular, genetic and biochemical toxicology, biochemistry, the biology of cancer, environmental chemistry,
radiation biology and ecotoxicology. You can choose between two main specialisations: environmental toxicologist or
radiation biologist. You will also carry out a degree project at the department that is responsible for the programme:
Genetics, Microbiology and Toxicology (GMT). A Masters degree in Toxicology opens career opportunities within official
bodies and within industry. Industry and modern society require advanced knowledge in toxicology, and the requirement
is particularly large for research and development within biotechnology, pharmacology, and the pharmaceuticals
industry. Toxicologists have traditionally had an important function within these fields, and this will be extended in the
future into the food industry, quality control of foodstuffs, and nutritional sciences. A further important field for
toxicologists is radiation biology, where such topics as our use of nuclear energy and new technology such as mobile
telephony have become important. The Masters Programme in Toxicology at Stockholm University is, of course, also
admirably suitable for those who plan to continue into research.
