Michael Ryan

Personal Biography
Michael started his career working in the TV industry for Sir Lew Grades UK
company, ITC. In 1978 Ryan and a business colleague left ITC to form J&M
Entertainment, a distribution sales agent for Independent films. Early on
Collins IAC and Ryans J&M liaised on certain new productions whereby IAC
secured production financing and J&M handled film sales.
J&M grew and became a leader in international film sales activity and
developed their business model to also take responsibility for financing new
films and providing production finance through advances secured against
world or international sales rights.
In 1980 Ryan and J&M were founder members of the American Film Marketing
Association (AFMA) later to be renamed Independent Film and Television
Alliance (IFTA) which was formed to provide an annual Los Angeles based
Film Market in competition to Cannes, Milan and Berlin. AFMA also acted
as an industry association to promote the activities of sales distribution
companies around the world and to negotiate on their behalf on a range of
legal, tax and other industry matters, acting in a similar capacity as the MPAA
does for the US film studios. As Chairman of IFTA from 2004 2007, Michael
oversaw the change in date of the American Film Market which subsequently
proved the demise of MIFED the international film market held in Milan in
October. Michael currently holds the position of Chairman of IFTA and AFM.

Pandora Film
Company Biography
In 1982, Frankfurt based cinema operators Karl Baumgartner and Reinhard
Brundig established Pandora Film Distribution. Before long, close working
relationships formed between Pandora and directors such as Aki Kaurismki
and Jim Jarmusch. Soon co-productions began to emerge out of what had
originally been a license and distribution company. With Emir Kusturica's film
UNDERGROUND, the transition to production was fulfilled. Today, Pandora
Film is an independent Production and Distribution Company, looking back at
over 30 years of art house films.
