Teaching is an art, and the most effective

training comes after graduation.

What qualities should a teacher, who is a
constant model for her or his students, have?
What do our students observe in us? Here are
a few thoughts which may be helpful to the
teachers.
1. Love your students and have a passion for
teaching; otherwise you will feel dissatisfied.
2. Always address your students by names. This
creates a friendly atmosphere.
3. Dont waste class time telling personal anecdotes
that have nothing to do with what you should be
teaching.
4. The teacher is a constant model for her/his
students, so be neat, tidy, and set a good
example.
5. Some students try to interrupt learning by asking
you endless questions. Do not let them dominate
the class with their constant talking.
6. Dont grade a students work when you are angry
with her. Avoid creating tension, ask her/him
questions and let her/him take a part in the
lesson, so that she/he will not thinking that you
are no longer interested in her/him.
7. Dont become too attached to the teachers desk.
Move around the room, and keep the students on

their toes. From time to time sit among the

students; have them think that you are one of
the class.
8. Praise your students when they do well. This is a
real reward for them, and it encourages them to
do their best.
9. Dont exaggerate your speech. Speak as
naturally as possible. Never swallow words.
10.
have good eye contact with your students,
and focus your attention on the one you have
called on, but dont make a student feel
uncomfortable by staring at her.
11.
Every student learns at a different rate. We
must always remember that a class consists of
both good and slow students.
12.
Every student deserves her/his share of class
time; be sure she gets it.
13.
Neither whisper nor speak too loudly when
you teach, but be sure the students in the back
row can her you.
14.
Create an atmosphere of in which the
students feel relaxed enough to express
themselves.
15.
Students who dont be attention should be
kept alert by having questions directed to them.
16.
Go from the known to the unknown and from
the regular to the irregular.

17.
Check your students homework regularly,
especially at the beginning of the school year, so
they will form the habits of doing it regularly.
18.
Let the students laugh when you draw stick
figures. And laugh with them. The lesson will be
more interesting.
19.
As foreign language teachers, our greatest
but last resort is the mother tongue. Dont use it
unless absolutely necessary, and try to enable
your students to speak English automatically and
to think in English.
20.
Use previously learned grammatical patterns
in teaching new vocabulary items, and previously
learned vocabulary items in teaching newest
pictures. The more students use something new
(or old) the more automatic the patterns and
items become.
