ZERO GRAVITY MYTH BUSTED

We must have perhaps seen a live video of an astronaut floating in a shuttle orbiting
around the earth and construe that there is no gravity up there. As even the astronauts call
it ZERO- gravity we tend to assume it as no gravity at all. The manifestation of
astronauts floating and take wing around like as being weightless gives the chimera of
zero-gravity. Zero gravity, which doesnt really exist anywhere in the universe, is nothing
but a misleading pseudonym which can be instead better depicted as weightlessness.
Gravity symbolizes the communal attraction flanked by two objects, and the strength of
its pull depends on the mass of the objects and the distance between them. Greater the
mass, greater is the pull. By disparity, greater distance leads to a prompt decrease in the
gravitational pull. Albert Einstein successfully put forward an interesting approach to
understand gravity. His ideas suggest considering a 2-D flat universe and each object in
space would act like a ball. The ball when kept on the space-time fabric shall create a
bulging, akin to a shallow dent. More huge objects create a bigger pocket while tiny
would scarcely establish a dimple. This proves that there is gravity everywhere in space.
If you are still not dissuaded, try to answer this question: If there is no gravity in space,
what is holding the space entities in its orbit? Without gravity everything would just fly
apart and thus there will be no existing universe.
So, if there is gravity why are the astronauts floating? Why not reach the surface?
They are not basically floating but instead falling. They, along with the space-shuttle are
in continuous freefall and experience weightlessness. The shuttle due to the gravitational
pull is continuously falling towards the earth and so are the astronauts. Since astronauts
are falling inside the shuttle along with the shuttle it appears as though they fly around
like being weightless. This phenomenon is referred to as apparent weightlessness.
Though influenced by the gravitation, the shuttle never reaches the surface due to the
concept of orbital velocity. The space shuttle inhabited by the astronaut moves with a
high horizontal velocity with respect to the earth and the vertical velocity arising due to
the gravitation pulls them towards the surface and is strong enough to bend the resultant
direction of velocity in an unremitting curl that surrounds the earths curvature. The
astronauts are essentially falling in a circle around the planet thus never reaching the
surface. They along with the shuttle are traveling at an orbital velocity surrounding the
planet giving rise to centripetal force which balances the gravitational force resulting in
the condition of apparent weightlessness. If the shuttles velocity surpasses the orbital
velocity, it would flee away into outer space and if it is slightly slower that the orbital
velocity would fall onto the earth.
All orbiting objects move fast enough that the gravitational force in its place of pulling it
towards the earth pulls it around the latitude. Hence it can be clearly understood that there
is no such concept called zero-gravity which is often mistaken for micro-gravity or
very little gravity.
