SAFE ATTITUDE TOWARDS WORKING

Eye injuries
A survey by the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in the United
States of about 1,000 minor eye injuries reveals how and why many on-the-job
accidents occur:
Not wearing eye protection. BLS reports that nearly three out of every five
workers injured were not wearing eye protection at the time of the accident.
Wearing the wrong kind of eye protection for the job. About 40 of the injured
workers were wearing some form of eye protection when the accident occurred.
These workers were most likely to be wearing eyeglasses with no side shields,
though injuries among employees wearing full-cup or flat-fold side shields
occurred, as well.
What Causes Eye Injuries?
Flying particles. BLS found that almost 70% of the accidents studied resulted
from flying or falling objects or sparks striking the eye. Injured workers estimated
that nearly three-fifths of the objects were smaller than a pin head. Most of the
particles were said to be traveling faster than a hand-thrown object when the
accident occurred.
Contact with chemicals caused one-fifth of the injuries.
Other accidents were caused by objects swinging from a fixed or attached
position, like tree limbs, ropes, chains, or tools which were pulled into the eye
while the worker was using them.
Hammering objects like nails also resulted in eye injuries

POSITIVE COMMUNICATION
Communication is a powerful tool that can guarantee the safety of every worker
and also improve the chances of success of every task being executed. It must be
two-way process which includes sharing information, ideas and feelings
between people.
It can be audible or visual. Poor communication can lead to injuries and even
death. So
Always communicate with your colleagues. Let them know what you are about

to do, how and where you will do it


Always get confirmation from them that they heard and understood you.
Always make sure the equipment operator sees you before entering a work
area, even after you have communicated your intentions to him.
Wear a highly visible overall to increase your visibility in the work area
especially in areas of poor visibility
Positive Communication is a key to safety DONT NEGLECT IT!!!
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SAFETY?
Safety is everyones responsibility! As an employee you should:
Learn to work safely and take all rules seriously.
Recognize hazards and avoid them.

Report all accidents, injuries and illness to your supervisor immediately.


Inspect tools before you use them to avoid injury.
Wear all assigned personal protective equipment
On the other hand it is managements responsibility to:
Provide a safe and healthy workplace
Provide personal protective equipments
Train employees on safe procedures and in how to identify hazards.
Everyone must be aware of potential hazards on the job:
Poor housekeeping results in slips, trips, falls, fires etc.
Unsafe electrical equipment or improper use of electrical equipment

Poor manual handling can cause back problems and other injuries.
Tools and equipment can cause injuries if guards or protective devices are
disengaged.
