PART A
INTRODUCTION
A.1 Objective:
ISIE-Electric solar vehicle championship for Professionals is conducted by ISIE for the first time
to gather the professionals from different organizations to participate in this event .We aim to
build the interest of the society towards the Renewable Sources of Energy. Our focus is to
develop new technologies to utilize the alternative power sources, which are the future of
Automobiles, as most of the conventional sources of energy will be depleted in the coming years.
This event will help to develop the interest of society towards new energy sources as well as it
will reduce the GHS(Green House Gases) and undesirable toxic oxides to the great extent. The
professionals participants will not only work to develop green energy rather they will get a
platform for B to B tie up/meetings which will be beneficial to the society as well to the
companies.
ESVC is a design and manufacturing of solar racing car event under ISIE Design Restriction so
as to compete with other teams all over the country from different organizations.
A.2 Scope:
The scope of the Electric-Solar Vehicle Championship (An Indian Solar Challenge) is to
stimulate research into, and development of, sustainable transport, meaning that the ESVC is
primarily a design competition.
The regulatory philosophy is to provide the parameters upon which to base the design, rather
than specify exactly how each is to be achieved. Science and technology evolve and to encourage
the most innovative ideas, so too do the event requirements.
A.3 History of ESVC:
The ESVC for professionals is conducted for the first time in India to develop a platform
for the various industries to work towards the development of eco-friendly electric vehicles
and also to develop a smooth interaction between the companies. Before this event ISIE has
organized many events for students to develop their practical skills.
This Innovative initiative was taken in 2013, and we organized Electric-Solar vehicle
championship at Lovely Professional University, Punjab. ESVC held every year from 2013 in
different state and Universities.
A.3.1 ESVC 2013-2014:

Both the tests will be conducted simultaneously .i.e. the vehicle will be accelerated to the
maximum speed for the first 50 meters and apply brake on the brake line and vehicle should stop
within the range of 10 meters.
The acceleration event evaluates the Vehicles acceleration in a straight line on flat
pavement
All the Vehicles have to pass the brake test to participate in any of the dynamic events.
The Vehicle must stop in a straight line (10m Maximum) after the brake is applied on the
Vehicle. Each Vehicle will be given 3 attempts to pass the brake test. But in case if the
Vehicle passes the test in first attempt it will not be given any other trials. (Reference
:According to ICAT 1989)
ISIE-ESVC17

www.imperialsociety.in

Page-43

Note - Brake Test does not have any points, but it is mandatory for the teams to qualify this
round to participate in the dynamic round.
F.6.1 Scoring
The acceleration score is based upon the corrected elapsed time. Elapsed time will be measured
from the time the car crosses the starting line until it crosses the finish line.
Scoring formula: Scoring formula: 150 [(T longest T yours)/ (T longest- T shortest)]
F.6.2 Penalty
Cones Down or Out: A two (2) second penalty will be added for each DOO (including entry and
exit gate cones) that occurred on that particular run to give the corrected elapsed time.
Did Not Attempt (DNA): If the Vehicle did not attempt or if it does not complete the event, then
those teams would receive DNA.
F.7 Hill Climb and Traction Round:
The Hill Climb Event is designed to measure each vehicles ability to transmit excess (climbing)
force to the ground. If local terrain does not support a significant Hill Climb, a Traction Event
may be substituted, usually involving pulling an excess load.
F.7.1 Objective: This event tests the vehicles relative ability to climb an incline at 10o from a
standing start and pull a designated object, e.g. eliminator skid, vehicle, or chain, along a flat
surface. The organizer will determine the hill height steepness and surface or object to be pulled.
F.7.2 Procedure: Each vehicle may make two (2) attempts with the best time or distance
counting for score. If a vehicle cannot complete the course and get a time, it will be scored on the
distance that it travels before stopping. Once the vehicle stops moving forward the attempt is
over and the attempt is scored for distance at that point. Vehicles may not continue the attempt
after they have stopped on the course.

ISIE-ESVC17

www.imperialsociety.in

Page-44

F.7.3 Traction Event Penalties: The organizer may modify the penalties imposed for different
violations to account for differences in the length or design of specific event courses.
F.7.4 Scoring
Different Distances - If none of the vehicles are able to complete the course, then:
Hill Climb or Traction Score =200 x (Dyours - Dshortest)/ (Dlongest Dshortest)
Where:
Dshortest: shortest distance traveled by any vehicle
Dyours: distance traveled by the vehicle to be scored
Dlongest: longest distance traveled by any vehicle
F.8 Maneuverability Test:
F.8.1 Objective: Maneuverability is designed to assess each vehicles handling ability over
typical off-road terrain. The course may consist of a variety of challenges at the organizers
option, possibly including, ruts and bumps, drop-offs, sand, rocks, gullies and logs, .
F.8.2 Procedure: Each vehicle may make two (2) runs with the best time including penalties,
counting for score.

F.8.3 Penalty: The organizer may modify the penalties imposed for different violations to
ISIE-ESVC17

account for differences in the length or design of specific event courses.

Off track:

10 seconds

F.8.4 Time Limit: Only vehicles that complete the maneuverability course within a time not
exceeding 2.5 times that of the fastest vehicle will receive a score. If a vehicle is on the course
for a time that exceeds 2.5 times the fastest time recorded to that point then the attempt may be
declared over and the vehicle may be removed from the course and scored as Excess Time.
F.8.5 Scoring: Maneuverability scoring is based on the vehicles time through the course
including any penalties.
Maneuverability Score = 100 point x (T longest T yours)/( T longest T shortest)
Where:
T shortest: fastest time by any vehicle
T yours: time for the vehicle to be scored
T longest: maximum time by any vehicle

F.9 Cross-Pad Round:

ISIE-ESVC17

www.imperialsociety.in

Page-46

This round checks the maneuverability of vehicle, to measure the Vehicles cornering
ability on a flat surface while making a constant-radius turn and drivers skill.

It is a dynamic round. In this round the vehicle should be driven through a track specified
by the organizers.

This round is intended to check the handling, cornering, acceleration and braking abilities
of the vehicles.

If the vehicle is unable to start, it will not be allowed to participate in these rounds.

Teams with least time to reach the finish will get maximum points. In this round teams
can get maximum of 150 points. The points for this round will be calculated by the
formula given below.

Sports plastic cones will be placed at X marked position. If the vehicle hit the cone for 2
seconds will be added to time per hit. If the cone totally displaces or fell down, 10
seconds will be added each time.
Maximum of two attempts will be given to each team. Teams can choose any driver of
their choice.

F.10 Endurance round:

General Instructions

Endurance round is carefully designed to test the overall efficiency of the vehicle. Solar
panels, batteries charging capabilities by solar energy and motors are put to vigorous test
during this event.
Short technical inspection will be done of each vehicle before participating in the
endurance round.
Lineup of vehicle during this event will be based on the acceleration round points. Teams
with maximum points will be lined up in the beginning.
Teams can use any driver of their choice. They can change their driver in the middle of
the race twice but in a specific area. Driver has to give a particular assigned signal before
changing. No extra time will be given to change the driver.
In case of break down they have to restart where they have stopped the vehicle.
Teams cannot change their batteries during the endurance round.

Note: If any team found, not following any or ignoring judges command they will be
disqualified immediately.
F.10.1 Endurance Round A:
Solar Performance
Solar Performance will check the efficiency of the solar system as well as the charging rate of
the batteries. Teams have to bring the batteries charged exact 20% and organizers will provide
specific time of 3 hours to charge their batteries. Then teams have to drive the vehicle
continuously for 1 hour on track.
F.10.2 Endurance Round B:

For Endurance round B teams have to drive their vehicles continuously for three hours
using their solar and battery power combined.
Total no of laps will be counted.
If the vehicle stops due to mechanical failure then 15 minutes will be given to start the
vehicle. If the vehicle does not start in 15 minutes, then vehicle will not be allowed to run
further in this stage and number of laps covered will be considered final.
If the vehicle halt because of low battery then they can move their vehicle to one side of
the road to charge the batteries only with solar energy.
Your score= Your Laps x 450 point
