Bradford, Alina. Deforestation: Facts, Causes & Effects. LiveScience, TechMedia Network, 4
Mar. 2015, www.livescience.com/27692-deforestation.html.
Alina Bradfords article on deforestation written for livescience.com gives readers insight
into the causes and effects of worldwide deforestation. Bradford provides key facts into the
various reasons for deforestation as well as introduces statistics to prove the findings and the
effects. Bradfords article informs readers that the majority of deforestation takes place in
Indonesia, and that 90 percent of the continental United States indigenous forest has been
removed since 1600. Bradford delves into the solution of reforestation, however she also informs
readers that while reforestation may solve many problems caused by deforestation, there is no
way to solve every problem. Bradford also explains how closely connected deforestation is to
climate change.
Alina Bradfords article was very informative and useful. I was able to double check her
facts and sources and found them to be credible. Bradford was able to communicate the issues
without inserting her personal bias into the article. With the topic of deforestation, it is easy to
give unbiased information due to the statistics proving the harmful effects. The goal of the source
is to provide readers with enough information to make an informed opinion.

This source will allow me to provide important facts to support my argument. Not only
was the article helpful to me, it will assist me in informing my readers about the issue of
deforestation. I was able to learn many statistics from the article, and these statistics will allow
me to be a more credible writer.
Becker, Andrea. Rates of Deforestation & Reforestation in the U.S. SeattlePi, Hearst Seattle
Media, LLC, education.seattlepi.com/rates-deforestation-reforestation-us-3804.html.
Andrea Beckers article for SeattlePi provides readers with pure facts and statistics.
Becker offers readers insight into the rates of deforestation as well as information about the rates
of reforestation. Becker shows that there has been a rise in reforestation in recent years. Along
with the statistics showing the rates of deforestation and reforestation, Becker also provides
readers with information about the current forest cover in the United States and the historical
trend of forest cover for the United States.
Andrea Beckers source was very useful. It was very statistic driven and gave absolutely
no bias whatsoever. While most articles covering the topic are statistic based, this one was
entirely statistics which makes it very useful to use in an argument. The sources are credible and
Andrea Becker is a credible writer. The information about trends involving the current and
historical forest cover will be very useful in my paper to give readers a background regarding
forest cover. The information about reforestation rates will also assist in my argument as they
will show that while efforts are being made, there needs to be more focus on it to solve the
problem.
This source was very helpful to my argument. Beckers article gives me even more
statistics to use in my argument. It also provided me with new statistics about other topics in

deforestation. This article has given me a realistic idea regarding the current state of
deforestation and reforestation.
Robbins, Jim. Deforestation and Drought. The New York Times, The New York Times
Company, 10 Oct. 2015, www.nytimes.com/2015/10/11/opinion/sunday/deforestation-anddrought.html.
Jim Robbins article about deforestation and drought written for The New York Times
offers insight into the idea that deforestation may be causing the drought in Brazil. Robbins gives
the example of Australia where in 1907 officials built a 2000 mile long fence across the continent
to keep the rabbits from crossing from the wild outback into farms. The vegetated side had
clouds form over it while the cultivated side showed a 20 percent decline in rainfall. One leading
theory explains that the darker native plants absorb more energy and water vapor which is then
released and formed into clouds. This theory explains why Brazil is in one of its worst droughts
ever experienced. Within the last two years, about 2000 square miles of the Amazon was lost to
clearing to make room for soybean farms and cattle. Robbins argues that this is a direct cause of
the drought.
Robbins source is very useful. This article was very interesting because it looked at
deforestation in an entirely different way compared to the rest of the articles. Robbins article
was not biased and he used many scholarly articles and studies to write the article. Jim Robbins
is a very credible author and his use of studies and credible references make the article credible.
I never thought about the loss of precipitation caused by deforestation, and this will help
my paper immensely. Not only will I be able to back my argument up with facts and statistics
about deforestation, but I will also be able to give current examples of the effects of

deforestation. This idea will be one of the focus points in my paper. Readers will be able to look
at this information in a very clear way and they will be able to see the direct results of
deforestation, whereas throwing around stats showing the effects dissociates the reader from the
argument.
