The graph of y x 3 3x 2 is reflected in the y-axis, then translated using the vector
of y h( x) .
(a) Write h( x ) in the form h( x ) ax 3 bx 2 cx d .

The graph of y x 3 3 x 2 4 is obtained by applying a composition of two transformations to the graph

y x3 3x 2 .
(b) State the two transformations whose composition maps the graph of y x 3 3x 2 onto the graph
y x 3 3 x 2 4 and also maps point A onto A .

3

(a) P ( x , y ) is the image of P(a, 2a) under the translation T. Find the coordinates of P .
(b) T maps the line with equation y = 2x onto another straight line with equation y = kx. Using your answer to
part (i), or otherwise, find the equation of this straight line.
(c) Let Q (a, ma) be a point on the line with equation y = mx. Q ( x , y ) is the image of Q (a, ma) under the
translation T. Find the coordinates of Q .
(d) Given that T maps two lines of the form y = mx onto themselves, use your answer to part (iii), or
otherwise, to find the two possible values of m.
