Introduction
THIS is LEED
BETTER BUILDINGS ARE OUR LEGACY.
WHAT IS LEED?
The LEED plaque on a building is a mark of quality and
achievement in green building.
Leaders across the globe have made LEED the most widely used
green building rating system in the world with 1.85 million square feet
of construction space certifying every day. LEED certification
provides independent verification of a building or neighborhoods
green features, allowing for the design, construction, operations and
maintenance of resource-efficient, high-performing, healthy, costeffective buildings. LEED is the triple bottom line in action, benefiting
people, planet and profit.
?WHY LEED
LEED certification means healthier, more productive places, reduced
stress on the environment by encouraging energy and resource3
38%
Of all CO2 emissions
13.6%
Of all potable water (15 trillion gal. / year)
73%
Of U.S. electricity consumption
LEED projects are responsible for diverting over 80 million
tons of waste from landfills. Compared to the average
commercial building, LEED Gold buildings in the General
Services Administrations portfolio consume a quarter less
energy and generate 34% lower greenhouse gas
.emissions
THIS IS LEED
LEED is pushing the green building industry to go further. Developed
in a transparent, consensus-based process that includes several
rounds of public comments and approval from USGBC members,
LEED ensures that leaders can demand more from our buildings,
creating healthy experiences, conserving precious resources and
.benefitting the business bottom line
How It Works:
LEED projects earn points across nine basic areas that address key
aspects of green buildings.
5
1. Integrative process
2. Location and transportation
3. Sustainable sites
4. Water efficiency
5. Energy and atmosphere
6. Materials and resources
7. Indoor environmental quality
8. Innovation
9. Regional priority

WAREHOUSES & DISTRIBUTION CENTERS
For buildings used to store goods, manufactured products,
merchandise, raw materials or personal belongings, like

HOSPITALITY

92.2%
The percentage of LEED-certified new construction projects that are improving
.energy performance by at least 10.5%, according to an analysis of 7,100 projects

WHAT IT IS
As humans, we spend 90% of our time indoors. That time should be
spent in spaces that allow us to breathe easy, give us views of nature
and daylight, and make us healthier and more productive. LEED for
Interior Design and Construction (LEED ID+C) enables project teams
who may not have control over whole building operations to develop
.indoor spaces that are better for the planet and for people
SECTORS
RETAIL
For all other interior spaces dedicated to functions other than retail or
.hospitality
WHAT IT IS
A home is more than just shelter: homes are the most important
buildings in our lives. We think thatevery building should be a green
buildingbut especially homes. Why? LEED homes are built to be
healthy, providing clean indoor air and incorporating safe building
materials to ensure a comfortable home. Using less energy and water
means lower utility bills each month. And in many markets, certified
green homes are now selling quicker and for more money than
.comparable non-green homes
Some of the most important buildings in the world use LEED.
Shouldnt the most important building in everyones world use LEED,

times
The EPA estimates that indoor air is between two and ten
times more polluted than outdoor air. LEED-certified
homes are designed to maximize fresh air indoors and
.minimize exposure to airborne toxins and pollutants

WHAT IT IS
Is your local grocery store within walking distanceand is there a
sidewalk for you to trek there safely? Does your neighborhood boast
high-performing green buildings, parks and green space? Do bikes,
pedestrians and vehicles play nicely together on the road? LEED for
Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) was engineered to inspire
and help create better, more sustainable, well-connected
neighborhoods. It looks beyond the scale of buildings to consider
.entire communities

The number of people who look for neighborhoods with abundant sidewalks and
.pedestrian-friendly features, according to a consumer preference survey
